How to Automate a Rotating Video Playlist for YouTube Live

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For several prerecorded files, add OBS Studio’s VLC Video source, select the videos in playback order, and enable Loop Playlist. Turn on Shuffle Playlist only if you want randomized playback. For a single file, use an OBS Media Source and enable Loop. These settings automate playback in OBS; YouTube’s broadcast controls are a separate part of the setup.

Choose the OBS source that fits your playlist

What you want to play OBS source Setting
Several local video files in a chosen sequence VLC Video Enable Loop Playlist; optionally enable Shuffle Playlist for randomized order.
One local video file repeated Media Source Enable Loop.

OBS documents these controls in its Media Sources guide. A single Media Source loops one file; for a multi-file rotation, use VLC Video.

Set up an automated multi-file rotation in OBS

  1. Install VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. Match its architecture to OBS: if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
  2. Add the source. In your OBS scene, add a VLC Video source. The precise menu wording can vary by OBS version, but choose the source type named VLC Video.
  3. Build the list. Add the local video files you want to play. Arrange them in the intended order if playback order matters.
  4. Choose rotation behavior. Enable Loop Playlist to restart the list after its last item. Enable Shuffle Playlist only if you prefer a randomized sequence.
  5. Check visibility behavior. Set what the source should do when it is not visible in the scene. OBS provides visibility behavior controls that determine whether playback continues, pauses, or stops while hidden. Choose the behavior that matches your scene switching; test it before going live.
  6. Preview the scene. Confirm the video appears as expected and that the list advances and loops as intended. If you rely on shuffle, check that randomized playback is acceptable before starting the broadcast.

Loop one video instead

  1. Add a Media Source to the OBS scene.
  2. Select the video file.
  3. Enable Loop in the source properties, then preview playback to confirm it repeats.

Use this approach when the rotation consists of just one file. It does not provide the multi-file playlist behavior of VLC Video.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the live setup and configure the broadcast and stream settings.
  2. Connect OBS to the YouTube stream using the stream key provided in YouTube’s live setup. Treat the key as a credential: do not share it or publish it.
  3. Check YouTube’s incoming stream preview and status before starting the broadcast.
  4. Start the broadcast when the preview and playlist are ready. Keep an eye on the live preview to confirm the intended scene and media are being sent.

Playlist playback and broadcast management are different jobs. OBS plays the local files. YouTube’s Live Streaming API can create and manage broadcasts and streams, link them, schedule broadcasts, and transition broadcast states; actions that insert, update, or delete resources require user authorization. The API documentation does not describe managing local OBS playback or rotating files inside OBS. See Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API overview and Life of a Broadcast.

Keep the two meanings of “playlist” separate

Here, a playlist is a set of local video files that OBS plays in sequence or shuffle. YouTube’s HLS delivery documentation uses “playlist” in the context of transport and media delivery, not as the OBS list of videos. HLS playlist requirements are not a way to configure VLC Video in OBS; see Google’s HLS delivery guidance.

Check rights before streaming prerecorded media

YouTube says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” If YouTube identifies third-party content, it may replace the stream with a placeholder image and warn the creator to stop streaming it; if the content remains, the live stream may be temporarily interrupted or terminated. If you have a license for third-party material, ask the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. A license alone does not ensure the stream will avoid interruption if the channel is not allowlisted. Read YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.

Troubleshoot playlist automation

  • VLC Video is missing or does not work: confirm VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS. In particular, 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
  • The list stops after the last file: check that Loop Playlist is enabled on the VLC Video source.
  • The same file repeats instead of several files rotating: a Media Source loops one file. Use VLC Video and add the full list for multi-file playback.
  • The order changes unexpectedly: check whether Shuffle Playlist is enabled. Disable it for the selected list order.
  • Playback pauses or stops after switching scenes: review the VLC Video source’s visibility behavior. Set it to continue, pause, or stop according to the behavior you need when the source is hidden.
  • OBS plays correctly but YouTube does not show the broadcast: check that OBS is connected with the stream key from the intended YouTube live setup, then check the incoming stream preview and status in YouTube Studio. Playlist settings do not start or manage the YouTube broadcast by themselves.
  • The stream is interrupted after copyrighted material appears: YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. Stop using material you are not authorized to broadcast; for licensed material, ask the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting.
