Use a YouTube-oriented HandBrake preset to convert the video, then load the finished file into a separate live encoder—or use a cloud service that plays uploaded videos—to send and maintain the stream.
What HandBrake does—and what it does not
HandBrake transcodes a source video into a new file. A live encoder sends a continuous feed to YouTube Live. Converting a video is therefore only the preparation step; it does not create a live broadcast, configure a stream key, or keep a channel live around the clock.
HandBrake’s Web > Creator presets are designed for video-hosting services such as YouTube. They produce an MP4 file with H.264 video and AAC stereo audio, making them a practical starting point. Select a preset that suits your source and intended output rather than assuming one preset fits every video. See HandBrake’s official presets documentation.
Convert the video in HandBrake
- Open your source video. In HandBrake, open the file you intend to play on the stream and check that it is the correct recording.
- Choose a Creator preset. Select a YouTube-oriented option under Web > Creator that matches the intended resolution and frame rate. The documented Creator output uses MP4, H.264, and AAC stereo.
- Choose an appropriate frame-rate mode. Preserve the source’s frame rate where possible. HandBrake’s Constant Frame Rate (CFR) option makes the output exactly one frame rate throughout. Peak Frame Rate (PFR) limits higher-rate portions to a selected maximum while leaving lower-rate portions unchanged. Neither setting configures a live encoder’s required frame rate. HandBrake explains the distinction in its frame-rate documentation.
- Enable Web Optimised for an MP4 file when useful. This places the MP4 container header at the beginning, a layout commonly called fast start. It can help web delivery, but it does not make the file stream live or loop it. See HandBrake’s Web Optimised documentation.
- Start the encode and verify the result. When HandBrake finishes, play the converted file through and check both picture and sound before using it as your stream source. HandBrake’s Constant Quality vs Average Bit Rate guide explains its file-encoding quality trade-offs; file-encoding choices are not the same as YouTube’s live bitrate settings.
Send the converted file to YouTube Live
For a do-it-yourself broadcast, open a separate live encoder, configure its output for YouTube, and provide the stream URL and key from YouTube’s encoder setup. YouTube’s guide, Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder, covers the platform setup. Run a test, check that audio and motion are coming through, and monitor stream health once live.

Use YouTube’s live settings—not HandBrake’s file settings
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; CBR; AAC or MP3 audio; and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds, with a maximum interval of 4 seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Its published H.264 live bitrate recommendations include:

These are YouTube’s published live-ingest recommendations, not HandBrake encoding targets or independent performance measurements. Choose a live quality your upload connection can sustain, leave bandwidth headroom, and test and monitor the stream. YouTube’s networking advice recommends 20% bandwidth headroom. Do not carry live-encoder settings over to an uploaded file as if they were interchangeable. YouTube’s separate upload encoding guidance recommends MP4, H.264, AAC-LC/Opus/Eclipsa Audio, fast start, and encoding at the recorded frame rate. Live CBR and keyframe guidance addresses the broadcast feed, not the HandBrake conversion.
Make the setup suitable for 24/7 operation
A continuous broadcast also depends on the live encoder: it must support whatever looping or scheduling method you use and have appropriate reconnect and recovery behavior. The exact procedure varies by encoder; check that product’s current documentation before relying on it for uninterrupted operation. The available YouTube and HandBrake guidance does not establish a universal loop setup, stream duration limit, or recovery guarantee.

Common issues to check
- The converted file is ready, but YouTube is not live: HandBrake only created a file. Open it in a separate live encoder and complete YouTube’s encoder setup with the stream URL and key.
- The live stream stutters or loses quality: The connection may not sustain the selected live bitrate. Try a lower resolution or frame rate, confirm stable upload capacity, leave the recommended bandwidth headroom, and check YouTube’s stream-health indicators.
- The video or sound differs from the source: Play the HandBrake output before broadcasting. Check the chosen preset, frame-rate mode, and AAC stereo audio, then convert again if the output is unsuitable.
- The MP4 loads slowly online: Enable Web Optimised when encoding an MP4. Fast start can improve web delivery; it does not resolve live-stream connection or looping problems.
- The broadcast stops and does not resume: Check the encoder’s reconnect and recovery settings and its documentation. HandBrake does not manage broadcast recovery.
