How to Convert RTMP to WebRTC With Wowza Streaming Engine

A practical Wowza workflow for publishing RTMP into a live application and delivering compatible, secure WebRTC playback.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wowza Streaming Engine can ingest an RTMP stream and make it available for WebRTC playback. The workflow is server-side: configure TLS and WebRTC signaling, enable WebRTC on a live application, publish the RTMP source, and verify that the outgoing codecs and video profile work with the clients. Transcoding may be needed for compatibility, but it adds startup time and latency.

How the RTMP-to-WebRTC workflow works

Your encoder or IP camera publishes RTMP to a Wowza live application. Wowza then serves the stream to WebRTC playback clients. RTMP is the ingest side; WebRTC is the playback side. This is not a browser setting that converts an RTMP URL by itself.

WebRTC security is required. Wowza’s documented workflow uses DTLS-SRTP for media and HTTPS or WSS for signaling. The current setup guide, updated September 30, 2026, lists Wowza Streaming Engine 4.11 or later, with the latest configuration, and a live application with TLS configured as prerequisites: Wowza WebRTC playback setup.

Configure Wowza Streaming Engine

  1. Set up TLS and WebRTC signaling

In WSE Manager, configure the SSL/TLS host port for WebRTC WebSocket signaling, select the WebRTC implementation, save the changes, and restart the virtual host. The guide identifies v2 as the current implementation selection. Wowza also documents configuring this in VHost.xml; use the instructions for your installed version rather than copying settings from another release.

  2. Enable WebRTC on the live application

Open the live application’s WebRTC setup and enable “Play WebRTC from Wowza Streaming Engine.” Enable WebRTC publishing only if that application also needs to ingest WebRTC. WHIP/WHEP can be enabled for standards-based HTTP endpoints when needed. Save and restart the application. The XML alternative is setting the application’s <WebRTC><Enable> element to true.

  3. Publish the RTMP source

Set the encoder or source to publish to the Wowza live application using its normal RTMP encoder workflow. Confirm the incoming stream is active in Wowza before testing WebRTC playback. The RTMP-to-WebRTC example and workflow are documented in Wowza’s RTMP ingestion guide.

  4. Choose passthrough or transcoding

Use passthrough only when the source codecs and video profile are compatible with the WebRTC clients and output. Wowza says transcoding is required when the source audio codec, video codec, or video encoding profile differs from the WebRTC output. Its example converts AAC audio and H.264 High-profile video to Opus audio and H.264 Main-profile video.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wowza’s example recommends no B-frames, H.264 at 720p/30 fps for compatibility, and Opus audio at 48 kHz in stereo. These are vendor recommendations, not guarantees for every browser, network, or device. The example configures the application transcoder with a custom template. Transcoding can improve compatibility, but Wowza notes it increases startup time and latency compared with a video-only passthrough workflow.

  5. Test playback over secure signaling

Wowza’s hosted test page uses a secure signaling URL in this form: wss://[ssl-certificate-domain-name]/webrtc-session.json. Supply the matching application and stream names. For production, host the playback page on a server using SSL/TLS. The current guide names the Wowza Flowplayer Real-Time Streaming (WebRTC) plugin as a production playback option.

Check codecs and client compatibility

Wowza lists HEVC/H.265, H.264, VP8, and VP9 video codecs for WebRTC, and Opus, PCMU, and PCMA audio codecs, with Opus recommended. Actual playback still depends on the browser and device. Verify browser-specific support for the codec and profile you plan to use before standardizing your encoder settings.

Plan for audience size and delivery format

Direct WebRTC delivery is suited to one-to-few or few-to-few audiences; performance may suffer as connections grow, and direct delivery can consume significant bandwidth. For one-to-many distribution, Wowza recommends considering transcoding and delivering HLS or MPEG-DASH instead, which it says uses significantly less bandwidth than direct WebRTC delivery. Stream Targets can send streams to CDNs or Wowza Video.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • The signaling connection fails: Confirm TLS is configured, the playback URL uses wss://, TCP 443 is reachable, and the certificate domain matches the signaling host. Check that WebRTC is enabled for the application and that the virtual host and application were restarted after changes.
  • The incoming stream does not appear: Check that the encoder is publishing to the intended Wowza live application and that Wowza shows the RTMP stream as active. Verify the application and stream names used by the playback client.
  • Playback connects but has no audio or video: Compare the source audio/video codecs and video profile with the WebRTC output and client support. Configure transcoding when they differ; do not assume an RTMP source is automatically WebRTC-compatible.
  • Playback stutters or fails on some networks: Verify the configured media address and UDP 6970–9999 reachability, then check firewall and endpoint-security inspection rules. Signaling on TCP 443 alone does not establish that the media path is reachable.
  • Startup feels slow or latency is higher than expected: Check whether transcoding is enabled. Wowza notes that transcoded workflows have longer startup and higher latency than video-only passthrough; use passthrough only when the source format is compatible.
  • Quality degrades as viewers increase: Reassess whether direct WebRTC is the right delivery model. For a one-to-many audience, consider HLS or MPEG-DASH delivery and plan the necessary transcoding and distribution capacity.

Or let it run in the cloud
