To convert RTMP to WebRTC, send the RTMP stream to a media server that accepts RTMP ingest and can deliver WebRTC playback. The server bridges the protocols; it may pass compatible media through without re-encoding, or transcode when the source codecs or profiles do not fit the WebRTC delivery path.
What an RTMP-to-WebRTC bridge does
RTMP and WebRTC are different parts of a streaming workflow. RTMP commonly carries a contribution feed from an encoder to a server; WebRTC provides a real-time delivery path to compatible viewers. A media server sits between them: it receives the RTMP publish and exposes a WebRTC playback endpoint. SRS describes RTMP-to-WebRTC conversion, and OvenMediaEngine documents RTMP input with WebRTC output. SRS LTS v6 overview · OvenMediaEngine guide

“Conversion” does not always mean decoding and re-encoding every frame. If codecs and profiles are supported on both sides, the server may forward the media. Transcoding is a separate processing step needed when the input is incompatible or needs filtering or other changes. OvenMediaEngine documents an embedded transcoder; MediaMTX points to FFmpeg for transcoding, filtering, or unsupported protocol handling. MediaMTX stream forwarding guide
Choose a bridge that fits your workflow
| Option | Documented role | Consider before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| OvenMediaEngine | RTMP input and WebRTC output; its guide also describes embedded transcoding and other streaming outputs. | Whether transcoding is needed, WebRTC playback and signaling setup, codec support, operational complexity, and scaling. |
| SRS | Open-source media server whose LTS v6 overview explicitly names RTMP-to-WebRTC conversion. | Required protocols and APIs, the SRS release and configuration, and your comfort operating a media server. |
| MediaMTX with WHIP or FFmpeg where needed | Documents WebRTC forwarding through WHIP and recommends FFmpeg for transcoding, filtering, or unsupported protocols. | Whether simple forwarding is enough and whether the destination supports the required WHIP workflow. |
| OvenMedia Cloud | Managed streaming service presented by OvenMedia Labs as based on OvenMediaEngine. | Confirm feature fit, regions, security, scale, and commercial terms directly; the cited product page does not state pricing or partner terms. |
Compare candidates on source and destination protocol support, codec pass-through versus transcoding, latency needs, publisher and viewer scale, WebRTC network reachability, monitoring and recovery, and who will operate the server. There is no universally best bridge: the right choice depends on those requirements.

Set up the RTMP-to-WebRTC path
- Select the server. Evaluate SRS, OvenMediaEngine, or MediaMTX against the protocols and media processing you need. Use documentation for the exact release you deploy: SRS LTS v6, OvenMediaEngine, or MediaMTX forwarding.
- Configure RTMP publishing. Set your encoder or upstream source to publish to the server’s RTMP ingest address and stream name. Keep the publishing key or credentials private. Use encrypted transport when the product supports it and your security requirements call for it.
- Enable WebRTC delivery. Configure the server’s WebRTC listener and signaling, then make reachable network candidates or relay services available as required by that deployment. Ports and configuration keys differ by product and version, so follow the matching official guide rather than copying a generic port recipe.
- Verify audio and video compatibility. Check both tracks, including codecs and profiles, from ingest through playback. If the server cannot forward the source format to WebRTC clients, configure its transcoder or a supported FFmpeg processing step.
- Test from the viewer’s actual network. Confirm that the server receives the RTMP feed, WebRTC playback connects, both audio and video render, and reconnects and changing viewer bandwidth behave acceptably. A test on the server’s own network does not establish that viewers behind other networks or firewalls can connect.
Forwarding versus transcoding
Forward when the media is already compatible
Forwarding avoids an unnecessary encode step when the incoming codecs and profiles are supported by the chosen server and WebRTC clients. Confirm the actual server’s supported formats and test playback in the target clients; protocol support by itself does not prove that every media format will pass through.
Transcode only to solve a compatibility or processing need
Transcoding can adapt media that cannot be delivered as-is, but it adds processing and another part of the system to configure and monitor. OvenMediaEngine documents embedded transcoding; MediaMTX’s forwarding guidance points to FFmpeg when transcoding, filtering, or unsupported protocol handling is needed. Plan for codecs, latency, and network reachability
Check the whole media path
Do not infer WebRTC compatibility from an RTMP connection alone. Verify video and audio separately against the selected server’s ingest, processing, and playback support. Codec requirements vary by service: Amazon IVS real-time stages, for example, specify AAC-LC audio for RTMP ingest and Opus for WHIP ingest. Those are IVS-specific requirements, not general WebRTC rules. Amazon IVS real-time ingest documentation

Measure latency end to end
OvenMediaEngine describes its WebRTC output as sub-second, but that is a product capability description, not an independently measured guarantee for your deployment. Perceived delay depends on the complete path: source encoding, ingest, server processing, network conditions, and playback.

Make WebRTC reachable outside the server
WebRTC playback can depend on signaling and network candidates or relay services that work from the viewer’s network. Configure and test the deployment’s network path rather than assuming an open server port is sufficient. Exact requirements depend on the server and network design.
Amazon IVS is a service-specific case, not a generic converter
Amazon IVS real-time stages document RTMP/RTMPS and WHIP as ingest protocol choices. That does not by itself establish that IVS accepts an arbitrary existing RTMP input and republishes it as WebRTC. Treat it as an IVS workflow with its own setup and encoder requirements, not as evidence of a general-purpose RTMP conversion gateway. IVS ingest protocols

For IVS real-time stage ingest, AWS documents H.264 Baseline, a one- or two-second IDR interval, 10–60 fps, zero B-frames, 160p–720p, and a maximum video bitrate of 8.5 Mbps. It specifies AAC-LC audio for RTMP and Opus for WHIP. AWS warns that RTMP encoders with B-frames may be disconnected, and recommends veryfast and zerolatency settings for H.264. These limits apply to IVS real-time stages only; do not treat them as universal WebRTC settings. AWS IVS stream ingest requirements
The IVS RTMP publishing guide says to create a stage and ingest configuration, associate the configuration with the stage, and publish using the resulting endpoint and stream key. AWS recommends RTMPS unless a verified use case requires plain RTMP. For its OBS example, AWS recommends one- or two-second keyframes, disabling B-frames, and staying below 2.5 Mbps because that described workflow lacks simulcast; it also says RTMP streams must contain both audio and video. Those are details of the documented IVS workflow, not general encoder rules. AWS IVS RTMP publishing guide

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely area | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Server does not show an incoming stream | RTMP ingest configuration | Confirm the ingest address, stream name, credentials, and that the encoder is publishing to the selected server. |
| RTMP connects but WebRTC playback does not | WebRTC listener, signaling, or network reachability | Check the server’s WebRTC configuration and test the advertised network candidates or relay path from the viewer’s actual network. |
| Video plays but audio is missing, or vice versa | Track or codec compatibility | Inspect audio and video separately. Confirm the selected server and client support the source formats; use a supported transcode path if required. |
| Playback starts but is unstable or delayed | End-to-end network, processing, or source behavior | Test the full path under the intended network conditions, review whether transcoding is necessary, and check reconnect behavior and viewer bandwidth changes. |
| IVS disconnects an RTMP encoder | IVS-specific encoding constraints | For IVS real-time stages, check B-frames, H.264 settings, keyframe interval, bitrate, and the required audio/video tracks against AWS’s publishing guide. |

Frequently asked questions
Does converting RTMP to WebRTC always require re-encoding?
No. A server may forward compatible media; transcode when codec or profile compatibility, filtering, or another processing requirement calls for it.
Can Amazon IVS real-time stages be assumed to convert any RTMP input to WebRTC?
No. Its documentation describes RTMP/RTMPS and WHIP as ingest options for IVS real-time stages; that alone does not establish arbitrary RTMP-to-WebRTC republishing.
