There is no universal pixel-to-inch conversion. For CSS layout, divide CSS pixels by 96. For a printed or otherwise physically rendered image, divide its pixel count by the output density in pixels per inch (PPI). A screen’s pixel resolution alone cannot tell you its physical width or height.
Choose the right conversion for your goal
| Context | What “pixel” means | What you need | How to get inches |
|---|---|---|---|
| CSS layout | A CSS reference-unit length | The CSS pixel measurement | CSS inches = CSS px ÷ 96 |
| Print or physical raster output | A pixel in the image | Output density in PPI, or the print-size setting | Physical inches = image pixels ÷ PPI |
| Physical screen measurement | A display pixel, whose physical pitch depends on the display | The display’s physical dimensions or pixel pitch | Resolution alone is insufficient; measure the screen or establish its pixel pitch |
The 96-pixel rule applies to CSS units, not every kind of pixel. Image pixels, CSS pixels, and hardware display pixels describe different things, and their mapping depends on the output or rendering system. MDN’s CSS length reference defines the CSS relationship; NIST’s explanation of pixel measurements distinguishes pixel counts from physical dimensions.

For CSS, divide by 96
CSS defines 1 inch as 96 CSS pixels, so the conversion is:

CSS inches = CSS px ÷ 96
For example, 960 CSS px equals 10 CSS inches. The result is a CSS length, not a guarantee that the element will measure exactly 10 physical inches on every screen. A CSS pixel is a reference unit; it need not correspond one-to-one with a hardware pixel. The W3C CSS Values and Units specification explains the reference pixel, while MDN’s CSS length reference documents the fixed CSS-inch relationship.

It has always been used by professionals and hobbyists alike, jewelers, hobbyists, woodworkers, machinists, DIY, automotive mechanics, and more.
For print, divide image pixels by output PPI
A raster image’s pixel dimensions do not, by themselves, set its physical print size. When the output density is known, use:
Physical inches = image pixels ÷ output PPI
For example, 1,200 image pixels printed at 300 PPI span 4 inches. That is a calculation using the stated density, not a prediction about a particular printer or image. If a print application sets the size directly, use that setting; pixel count alone does not establish the final dimensions. MDN’s resolution reference describes related resolution units, but printer dots, image PPI, device pixels, and CSS resolution should not be treated as interchangeable in every context.

A screen’s resolution does not reveal its physical size
A resolution such as 1920 × 1080 describes 1,920 pixel columns and 1,080 pixel rows. It does not specify the screen’s width, height, or the physical size of each display pixel. NIST uses 1920 × 1080 as an example of a count of roughly 2 megapixels, without implying a physical pitch. Microsoft likewise explains that pixel size depends on both display resolution and the monitor’s physical size.

Why CSS pixels and hardware pixels can differ
CSS pixels are reference units designed to support consistent layout, while device pixels are the physical display’s addressable pixels. High-resolution displays and operating-system scaling can map one CSS pixel to multiple device pixels. The W3C describes a reference pixel in relation to viewing angle and a notional 96-dpi device viewed at arm’s length; it is not a claim that every screen pixel physically measures 1/96 inch.
Windows documentation gives standard scaling examples of 96 DPI at 100%, 120 DPI at 125%, and 144 DPI at 150%. These illustrate Windows scaling behavior, not a universal monitor specification. CSS also uses resolution units such as dpi and dppx; MDN notes that 1dppx corresponds to 96dpi under the CSS-inch relationship. These labels do not make image PPI, printer dots, and hardware pixels equivalent. See Microsoft’s DPI and device-independent pixels documentation and MDN’s CSS resolution reference.

Quick examples
- CSS layout: 480 CSS px ÷ 96 = 5 CSS in.
- Image output: 2,400 image pixels ÷ 300 PPI = 8 inches, if the output density is 300 PPI.
- Monitor: 1920 × 1080 identifies pixel counts, not the screen’s physical dimensions. Measure the screen or find its physical dimensions to answer that question.
In each case, the arithmetic is simple once the meaning of “pixel” and the relevant density or measurement are known.
