Playwright does not officially support running its browser binaries directly on Alpine Linux. Alpine uses musl, while Playwright’s browser builds require glibc. The dependable choices are to run the browser in a supported Linux container, or keep your app on Alpine and connect it to a remote Playwright server running in a supported environment. Playwright states that “Alpine Linux and other distributions that are based on the musl standard library are not supported” in its Docker guidance.
Choose where the browser will run
Installing the Playwright npm package in an Alpine Node image does not resolve the browser’s operating-system dependency. The package and browser executables are separate pieces: use a supported runtime for browser execution, and keep the Playwright package version aligned with the browser image or remote server.

Playwright documents both its Docker images and a remote-server pattern for unsupported Linux distributions in its Docker documentation. Its browser installation guidance explains browser installation and system dependencies. Follow the versioning guidance for the exact image and package you deploy; do not assume that an arbitrary Alpine package plus a downloaded browser will work.

Move the rendering process—not necessarily your whole application—to a supported Linux image. Use a Playwright image or another supported Linux distribution, pin compatible versions, install the browser you need, and run the screenshot code there. The example below assumes a Node.js project with Playwright installed and its matching browser available in that environment; use an HTML file as input.

})();For a URL instead of a local file, navigate to its HTTP or HTTPS address. If the page depends on scripts or remote assets, choose a navigation readiness condition appropriate to that page; a successful initial load does not guarantee every late-loading asset has finished. For HTML you generate in memory, use the Page API to set the page content before capturing it. The exact rendering result still depends on the browser and environment.
Keep the app on Alpine with a remote browser
In this design, the Alpine service is a Playwright client and does not launch a local browser. A separate Playwright server runs in a supported container. Connect to its WebSocket endpoint using Playwright’s browser connection API, then create a page and capture the image as usual.

})();Replace the example WebSocket address with the endpoint exposed by your server on the deployment network. This sketch illustrates the client connection and capture flow; configure the remote server according to Playwright’s documented remote-server guidance. Keep the client package and remote server on the same Playwright version. The HTML file must be accessible to the browser process: a path that exists only inside the Alpine container will not automatically exist on the remote browser container. Serve the HTML over a reachable URL or arrange shared access to its assets.
Set the screenshot dimensions and format
Playwright’s Page API saves a screenshot with page.screenshot(). Choose whether you need the visible viewport or the entire scrollable page, then select the file format and scaling behavior deliberately.

Keep captures stable across deployments
Screenshot output can vary with the host operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, and headless mode. For repeatable captures or visual comparisons, generate the baseline and later screenshots in the same environment. Playwright’s visual comparison guidance explains why keeping the environment consistent matters.

- Pin the Playwright package and the browser container or server version together.
- After updating Playwright, install the browser binaries associated with that release rather than relying on an older browser cache.
- Keep browser settings and headless configuration consistent between captures.
- For full-page output, confirm that the page’s content and assets are available to the browser before capturing.
