For repeatable work, use browser automation such as Playwright or a hosted HTML-to-image service. The resulting pixels can still vary with browser, operating system, and font availability, so check the output in the environments that matter.
Choose a rendering method
The right approach depends on whether you have a live page or HTML markup, how much control you need, and whether you want to manage a browser runtime.

| Approach | Best suited to | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| ScreenshotNeo | Capturing a public page through an API, or using its HTML/CSS-to-image capability | A hosted service avoids setting up your own browser. ScreenshotNeo supports PNG, JPEG, WebP, and PDF, and offers viewport, device-scale, wait, and CSS-related controls. See ScreenshotNeo. |
| Playwright | Capturing a page from your own code when you need control of browser navigation and screenshot behavior | You manage the browser installation and capture workflow. Its screenshot API supports image types, scale, and a stylesheet applied during capture. |
| Manual browser capture | A one-off image | Convenient for occasional use, but less suitable as a repeatable production process. |
For a public URL, either a hosted renderer or browser automation can be appropriate. For markup you generate yourself, use a service that accepts HTML or render it in a browser you control. Compare viewport and output controls, how you will ensure fonts and dynamic content are ready, and the work of operating a browser against the convenience of a hosted service.
Prepare HTML, backgrounds, and fonts for capture
Make the background explicit
Use the same CSS background rules you intend to publish, and make sure the target element has dimensions. Background images are external resources unless embedded, so the render environment must be able to fetch them. If the background is important to the result, verify that it appears in the saved image rather than assuming the initial page load means every asset has finished loading.

Load the intended font before taking the screenshot
Declare the font in the HTML or CSS, and ensure the renderer can reach its font resource. A hosted HTML/CSS-to-image service documents both a google_fonts option and loading a font by including a <link> in the HTML. Remote font loading depends on the resource being reachable from the actual render environment. In a browser you control, wait for document.fonts.ready before capture; this waits for the document’s font loading work to complete, but does not make an unreachable font available.
Set a deliberate viewport
Choose width and height to match the intended output. Responsive CSS is evaluated against that viewport, so changing its dimensions can change layout, line breaks, and which background rules apply. For higher-density output, choose the service’s device scale or the browser screenshot scale intentionally rather than treating pixel dimensions as interchangeable with CSS dimensions.

Wait for visual readiness
Navigation completing is not always the same as the page being visually ready. For delayed or dynamic content, wait for a relevant selector or other readiness signal, or use a deliberate delay when there is no better condition. Hosted renderers may expose readiness and delay controls; in Playwright, wait for the page-specific condition you need before capturing.

This Node.js example saves a full-page PNG from a local HTML file. It waits for the page load event and the document’s fonts, then captures the page. Install Playwright and its browser before running it; the exact installation commands depend on your project setup and chosen browser.

const { chromium } = require('playwright');
const path = require('node:path');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 1200, height: 800 },
deviceScaleFactor: 2,
});
await page.goto('file://' + path.resolve('card.html'), {
waitUntil: 'load',
});
await page.evaluate(() => document.fonts.ready);
await page.screenshot({ path: 'card.png', fullPage: true, type: 'png' });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
For a remote page, replace the file:// navigation target with its URL. If the page renders content after load, wait for a selector or application-specific ready state before the font wait and screenshot. Keep the viewport fixed when you need comparable outputs. Playwright also supports JPEG and WebP screenshot types and a CSS-pixel or device-pixel scale choice; use the format and scale that suit the destination.

Choose the output format and validate it
- PNG: A suitable choice when you want a lossless image of interface artwork or text.
- JPEG: Choose when that format is required by the destination; it is not lossless.
- WebP: Useful when the destination accepts it and you want a modern web image format.
- PDF: Use when the output should be a document rather than a single raster image.
Playwright documents PNG, JPEG, and WebP screenshot types and scale options. ScreenshotNeo documents PNG, JPG, WebP, or PDF output. Inspect the saved file at its intended display size and check that the background, line wrapping, and font appearance are right. Playwright cautions that screenshots differ between browsers and platforms because rendering and fonts can differ; if your image must match in more than one environment, validate each relevant combination rather than assuming one capture is universal.
Troubleshoot missing backgrounds, fallback fonts, or incomplete pages
- The web font is replaced by a fallback. Confirm the font URL is reachable from the render environment, that the HTML includes the correct font declaration or link, and that capture waits for font loading. If the font cannot be fetched, waiting alone will not fix it.
- A CSS background is missing. Check the CSS URL and resource access from the renderer, verify the element has nonzero dimensions, and make sure the relevant CSS has applied before capture.
- The output has the wrong layout. Set the viewport explicitly and confirm it matches the intended responsive breakpoint. Adjust the viewport before tuning CSS for a screenshot.
- Content is cut off or appears late. Decide whether you need a full-page image or a viewport-only capture, then wait for the relevant content or selector before taking the screenshot. A fixed delay is a fallback when no readiness condition is available.
- Text or spacing differs on another machine. Browser and platform differences can change rendered pixels. Test with the browser and platform combinations that matter to your users.
Plan for repeatability, reliability, and cost
For local automation, you control the browser workflow but must maintain its installation and decide how to handle failed navigation, inaccessible resources, and delayed content. A hosted renderer shifts browser operation to a service, but external fonts and background assets still need to be available to its rendering environment. In either case, explicit viewport dimensions and readiness conditions make the capture process easier to reproduce; they do not guarantee identical pixels across different browsers or platforms.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a Google Font in an HTML screenshot?
Yes, provided the rendering environment can load the font. A hosted renderer may provide a Google Fonts option, and a font link in the HTML is another documented method.
Will the screenshot look exactly the same in every browser?
No. Browser, platform, and font rendering differences can change screenshot pixels, so validate in the environments that matter.
