To convert a horizontal video for YouTube Shorts, make a square or vertical edit, then reframe the footage so people, action, and important text stay visible. For a full-screen mobile look, use a 9:16 canvas. If your source is already on YouTube, you can create a Short in YouTube Studio; for a local file or precise crop control, use an editor such as Premiere Pro or CapCut. Preview the whole result before publishing because an automatic crop can miss important details.
What format does a YouTube Short need?
YouTube’s current computer upload instructions allow Shorts up to three minutes long and require a square or vertical aspect ratio. The rules do not require exactly 9:16; that ratio is a common editing target for a full-screen vertical presentation. Check YouTube’s current Shorts upload instructions before publishing in case platform requirements change.

A vertical crop removes parts of the original wide frame. If a person, graphic, or essential context sits near the edge, the crop may cut it off. The right approach depends on whether you need to preserve the whole scene or focus on one subject.

Choose the method that fits your source

Make a Short from a video already on YouTube
- Open YouTube Studio and select the source video.
- Open Clips and Shorts, then choose Short.
- Select the segment by highlighting transcript text or setting start and end points on the timeline. AI suggestions may appear, but their availability is limited by country and language.
- Preview the segment. Adjust its timing and check the framing and captions. YouTube notes that the preview may show temporary bars in some scenes; the final version may display a blurred crop in those areas.
- Create a draft, complete the usual upload details, and publish when ready. In the documented cases, YouTube associates the source video as a related video, except for Shorts that are private, unlisted, or Made for Kids.
This route is convenient for extracting a moment from a hosted video. If the crop needs detailed manual control, make a vertical edit in a local editor instead. See YouTube’s Clips and Shorts in YouTube Studio instructions.

Reframe a local video in Premiere Pro
- In the Timeline, select the sequence you want to adapt. Right-click it and choose Auto Reframe Sequence.
- Choose Vertical 9:16 as the target ratio and create the sequence.
- Play through the full edit, paying particular attention to cuts and shots where the subject moves from side to side.
- If the framing needs correction, open Effect Controls and adjust Position, Scale, or Rotation. Add keyframes where needed to follow a moving subject.
Premiere Pro’s Auto Reframe can be applied to individual clips or a complete sequence, but automation does not ensure every person or graphic stays in frame. Adobe’s Auto Reframe tutorial demonstrates a 9:16 target, and its Auto Reframe overview describes the broader workflow.
Reframe a local video in CapCut
- Import the horizontal clip into CapCut.
- Change the canvas or aspect ratio to vertical, then select Auto reframe and set the target to 9:16.
- Inspect the full clip after reframing. Check that action, faces, captions, and overlays remain visible, and correct the composition where necessary.
- Export the finished vertical edit and review the exported file before uploading it.
CapCut’s Auto Reframing guide describes this workflow. Its guidance flags that fast movement, multiple people, and overlays can confuse automatic framing, so review is essential.

Choose a crop that preserves the story
- One central speaker or subject: A 9:16 crop that tracks the subject can look natural. Check each cut and use manual adjustments when the subject moves.
- Several people or action near the edges: Review every shot rather than assuming the automatic crop will retain everyone. A wider layout that keeps more of the original landscape image may communicate the scene more accurately than filling the entire vertical canvas.
- Text, captions, or graphics: Make sure they remain readable and are not pushed outside the vertical frame. Reposition overlays if the crop changes their relationship to the subject.
- Source already hosted on YouTube: Use Studio when its segment selection and available preview controls are sufficient.
- Local source or detailed composition needs: Use an editor when timing, framing, captions, or graphics need more control.
Check the upload and audio before publishing
- Confirm the finished video is square or vertical and no longer than three minutes under YouTube’s current computer upload instructions.
- On Android, YouTube’s upload flow for a square or vertical video includes trimming and an editor for text, filters, music, or other audio. The Android help page says audio selected from YouTube’s library is limited to 15-second clips. See YouTube’s Android Shorts upload instructions.
- Use only copyright-protected material that you have permission to use. YouTube warns that unauthorized material can receive a Content ID claim or, if a valid takedown notice is submitted, lead to a takedown and copyright strike. Review YouTube’s Shorts upload guidance and the Android guidance.
Fix common reframing problems
- A face or subject disappears at a cut: Check the crop after each edit point. Adjust position or add keyframes so the frame follows the subject.
- The crop excludes another person or important action: Reconsider whether a tight crop suits the scene. Use a wider layout if removing that information would change the meaning.
- Captions or overlays are cut off: Inspect them in the vertical composition and move or resize them before export.
- Studio’s preview shows bars: YouTube says some scenes may show temporary bars in the preview and that the final version may use a blurred crop there. Review the available preview and the published result rather than assuming the bars will appear unchanged.
- Automatic framing jumps or loses the action: Correct the crop manually in the editor. Fast motion, multiple people, and overlays can challenge automated reframing.
