How to Convert Hanifi Rohingya Webpages to Rohingyalish in Chrome

A reader-controlled Chrome extension can detect Hanifi Rohingya characters and transliterate eligible webpage text into Rohingyalish—without translating the language.

A Chrome extension can convert Hanifi Rohingya text on a webpage into Rohingyalish—the Latin-script form of Rohingya—without translating the language. A practical design detects Hanifi characters in the page, converts eligible text nodes when the reader asks, and provides a way to restore the original. That approach can spare readers the repeated copy-to-converter-and-back workflow, while keeping conversion reversible and under their control.

What the extension should do—and what it should not do

Hanifi Rohingya is an alphabetic script written from right to left, in the Unicode range U+10D00–U+10D3F. The Unicode Consortium estimates approximately one million Rohingya speakers. Rohingya is also written in Myanmar, Arabic, and Latin scripts. The Unicode Standard describes Hanifi Rohingya as “an alphabetic script written from right to left.”

The Latin output is Rohingyalish. This is script conversion, or transliteration: it changes the writing system, not the language or its meaning through translation. As the extension author puts it, “This is transliteration (changing the writing system), not translation.”

The central design challenge is therefore not identifying a page as Rohingya by its language label. It is finding Hanifi characters in the text, changing only the intended text, and letting readers switch back when they need to see the source.

Detect Hanifi characters, not just page language

Pages may have missing or inaccurate lang attributes, so language metadata alone is not a dependable signal. Instead, inspect text for Unicode code points in the Hanifi Rohingya block, U+10D00 through U+10D3F. The extension author recommends detecting characters directly rather than relying on the page’s declared language or chosen font.

Text can mix scripts, punctuation, and other characters. The author’s described implementation separates Hanifi runs for conversion and passes other content through unchanged. Treat that as the implementation approach, not as an independently verified guarantee of correct handling for every page.

Choose how readers grant access

Chrome content scripts can inspect and modify a page’s DOM in an isolated JavaScript world. Chrome supports statically declared scripts, dynamically registered scripts, and programmatic injection. For a reader-triggered “Convert this page” action, programmatic injection using activeTab and the scripting permission is a suitable narrow-access pattern; Chrome documents activeTab as temporary access associated with a user action. If the extension offers a persistent option for a particular site, it needs the relevant site access. Chrome recommends optional permissions when they fit the extension’s design.

Design choice Reader experience Permission implication
On-demand conversion The reader explicitly chooses “Convert this page” for the current page. Can use programmatic injection with activeTab and scripting.
Remembered site access The reader opts to convert pages on a site without repeating the action. Requires the relevant site access, which can be requested at runtime as an optional host permission where appropriate.

Keep the access explanation aligned with the actual behavior: readers should understand whether conversion happens only after an action or continues on sites they have allowed.

Convert text without disrupting the page

For DOM changes, the extension author’s implementation guidance is to edit existing text-node data rather than replacing a parent’s innerHTML. Rebuilding HTML can remove event listeners or interfere with state managed by a site’s framework. The author also describes keeping both each node’s original text and the value written by the extension, so a restoration action can avoid blindly overwriting text that the page has changed since conversion.

A safe conversion pass should leave editable and code-oriented areas alone. The author says the implementation skips scripts, styles, inputs, textareas, contenteditable regions, elements with role="textbox", code blocks, and common code editors. Avoiding text under a cursor is particularly important: rewriting it can disrupt someone who is typing or editing.

Modern sites can add or update content after the initial page load. The article describes using a MutationObserver to handle added or changed nodes without rescanning the entire document. It reports work slices of approximately 12 ms and a conversion of a 5,000-paragraph page in around 0.4 seconds with zero long tasks. Those are figures reported by the author for that stated test, not a general performance benchmark or a guarantee for other pages and devices.

Make conversion reversible and easy to control

Expose a clear “Convert this page” action and a “Show original” control. These controls make the extension’s effect legible: readers choose when to convert and can return to the source text. Reversibility also supports readers who need to compare spellings or inspect the original script.

For developers, restoration should be tied to the extension’s own changes. Recording the original node value and the extension-written value lets the extension distinguish its conversion from later page edits; restoration should not replace content the site or reader has since changed. This safeguard follows the approach described by the extension author, rather than a claim that every possible page mutation has been independently tested.

Set an honest expectation for transliteration quality

A converter can produce useful Latin-script text without establishing that every spelling is linguistically preferred. The extension author reports a round-trip consistency check on 9,200 distinct dictionary words: 187 did not round-trip. The author attributes discrepancies to spelling conventions, including ts, sh, and ng/ny versus ñg/ñy.

Those figures describe a dictionary consistency check, not a human-rated accuracy test. They do not support a claim that the converter is a particular percentage accurate. A successful round trip shows consistency under the converter’s conventions; it does not prove that the result is correct or natural Rohingyalish. The author says fluent-reader review remains necessary.

The same article reports 15,926 lexicon rows generated from 6,510 English dictionary entries and says the generated Hanifi entries were not individually reviewed. They should therefore be described as converter-consistent entries, not verified Rohingya spellings. For language-learning, publication, or other high-stakes use, have fluent Rohingya readers review the output.

When Hanifi text appears as boxes or question marks

If the original page displays Hanifi characters as boxes or question marks, the device may lack a font that covers the script. The language reference identifies Noto Sans Hanifi Rohingya as a free font. This is a source-page display issue: converting text to Latin script does not itself require that font.

What to say about privacy and availability

Do not promise local processing or make a current availability claim without checking the extension’s live listing and privacy disclosures. A Chrome Web Store search result says the extension runs locally and does not send page text or website preferences to a server, while the author’s article dated September 27, 2026 describes a private-by-default design. That article also said the listing was under review, so publication status is time-sensitive. The available statements are not a substitute for confirming the current listing and its disclosures.

For implementation details, Chrome’s documentation covers content scripts and the activeTab permission. The Unicode Consortium’s Unicode 18.0, Chapter 16 documents Hanifi Rohingya’s script properties.
