To use FLV videos in a YouTube 24/7 stream, first inspect their video and audio codecs. Remux the file if its existing streams are compatible with your chosen live profile; otherwise, re-encode it. Then play the prepared video through an encoder that sends a continuous feed to YouTube. Converting FLV to MP4 alone does not start or sustain a live broadcast.
What converting an FLV file does—and does not do
FLV is a container, not a guarantee about the codecs inside it. Two files ending in .flv may contain different video and audio formats, so the extension alone cannot tell you whether a file is suitable for your stream.

There are two separate jobs:
- Prepare the file: inspect it, then either remux compatible streams into a different container without re-encoding, or re-encode incompatible streams into formats appropriate for your live profile.
- Deliver a live feed: play the prepared video through an encoder connected to YouTube with the stream URL and stream key. A converted file sitting on your computer is not a live stream.
FFmpeg documents both conversion by re-encoding and stream-copy workflows; which applies depends on the codecs in your particular file and the target profile. See FFmpeg’s command-line documentation.
Inspect the FLV before choosing a conversion
Check the video codec, audio codec, resolution, frame rate and any additional tracks. This determines whether you can copy the streams or need to re-encode. Without inspecting the actual file, there is no universally correct FLV-to-MP4 command.

- Open the file in a media-inspection tool, or inspect its streams with FFmpeg’s
ffprobe. - Record the video and audio codec names, resolution, frame rate and any extra audio or subtitle tracks.
- Compare those details with the profile you intend to send to YouTube. Keep a copy of the original before making changes.
For example, if the streams are already suitable for the selected output container and live profile, stream copying can avoid an unnecessary encode. If a stream is incompatible, re-encode that stream to an accepted codec. Changing the container does not change the codecs inside it.
Choose remuxing or re-encoding

Do not choose a command just because it produces an .mp4 file. Confirm the input streams and target requirements first, then use the appropriate FFmpeg stream-copy or encoding options. The FFmpeg documentation explains the distinction, but the correct command depends on your file and chosen settings.

Set a YouTube-compatible encoder profile
YouTube’s current encoder guidance for RTMP/RTMPS lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC) or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Use the bitrate range in YouTube’s table for your chosen codec, resolution and frame rate; there is no single bitrate that fits every stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS on its standard settings page. HDR has separate HLS requirements, so do not apply the ordinary SDR profile to an HDR workflow without checking that guidance.

Connect the encoder and start the live stream
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select a live stream and find its server URL and stream key.
- Enter those values in your encoder, select the profile you chose, and set the video source to the prepared file or playlist.
- Start the encoder feed, then check the preview and stream health in Live Control Room before making the stream public or relying on it continuously.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it or include it in a screenshot or public configuration.
YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover the connection workflow. YouTube describes an encoder as software that converts video into a digital format for streaming; for a prerecorded 24/7 channel, it must also keep playback and delivery running continuously.
Test the full 24/7 workflow
A successful short preview does not prove a long-running setup will handle every restart, source transition or network interruption. Before depending on it, test representative material and confirm:

- The encoder recovers after a restart, and you know how you will respond to a network interruption.
- Live Control Room reports a healthy feed and the picture and sound are acceptable.
- If you are recording locally, the archive file grows as expected and can be opened and checked.
YouTube advises testing and monitoring the stream and checking local archive integrity. Storage needs depend on the bitrate and how long you want to retain recordings; YouTube’s cited guidance does not prescribe a drive size.
Check eligibility, copyright and archive limits
YouTube’s live-stream eligibility guidance says a channel must be verified, have no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days, and the person livestreaming must be at least 16. Check the current live-streaming eligibility requirements for your channel.

Using prerecorded material does not remove copyright obligations. Only stream videos and music you have the rights or permission to use, and consider whether the channel’s overall content complies with YouTube’s policies. A technically valid stream is not a guarantee of monetization or policy approval.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A continuous 24/7 broadcast exceeds that stated automatic-archive window, so arrange a separate recording or archive workflow if you need a complete local copy. See YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance and encoder guide.
Troubleshoot common conversion and streaming problems
