Use Data > Text to Columns to convert a column of text dates into Excel date values, choosing the date order that matches the source—MDY, DMY, or YMD. Check the results before relying on them: if the order is wrong or the column contains mixed date patterns, Excel may not interpret every value as intended.
Why convert text dates?
A cell can display something that looks like a date while storing text instead. Imported or pasted values are common causes. Text dates may not sort chronologically or work properly in date calculations because Excel dates are stored as serial values. Text dates are often left-aligned, but alignment is only a clue, not definitive proof. Microsoft explains how to identify and convert dates stored as text; its sorting guidance describes the date values needed for chronological sorting.

Convert the column with Text to Columns
- Keep a recoverable copy. Duplicate the workbook or retain the original text column until you have checked the converted values.
- Select the date column. Select the cells containing the text dates, then choose Data > Text to Columns.
- Follow the wizard and set the date interpretation. For a single date in each cell, use the date column format when offered. Choose the order that matches the source: MDY for month-day-year, DMY for day-month-year, or YMD for year-month-day. Check the preview against your source convention. Microsoft advises matching the chosen format closely to the preview; a mismatched order or mixed formats may leave values in General format rather than convert them as dates. - Finish and verify. Complete the wizard, then inspect several rows, including dates where the first two numbers could be mistaken for either a month or a day. Compare the results with the original values and the source’s date convention.
- Choose a display format if needed. Apply a date format to control how converted dates appear. Formatting changes appearance; it does not convert text into a date value. Microsoft’s date-formatting guide covers display formats.
Text to Columns also supports splitting delimited text into separate columns, but for an intact date in each cell the important step is choosing the matching date interpretation—not merely running the general split-text workflow. Choose another method when the text pattern calls for it

Microsoft documents DATEVALUE and Error Checking for text dates and gives the DATE formula approach for extracting a fixed-position date. These methods address particular text patterns; none removes the need to verify that the resulting calendar date is the one intended.

If Text to Columns does not convert the dates correctly
- Check MDY, DMY, or YMD. Values such as 04/05/2024 are ambiguous without the source convention. Confirm whether the source means April 5 or May 4 before selecting an order.
- Look for mixed patterns. If the column combines date orders or formats, a single interpretation may not handle every row. Review the preview and inspect rows from each pattern rather than assuming the whole column converted uniformly.
- Do not rely on cell appearance alone. Applying Short Date or Long Date changes display only. If a value remains text, a date format will not make it a usable date.
- Check converted values before sorting or calculating. Compare representative results to the original source, then test the column in the intended date-based task.
