To convert Bitcoin to U.S. dollars, multiply the BTC amount by a BTC/USD rate and record the rate’s source and timestamp. To calculate a gain or loss for U.S. federal tax purposes, subtract your adjusted basis from the amount realized on the sale; the sale’s full dollar value is not your profit.
Convert a Bitcoin amount to U.S. dollars
Use this calculation:
BTC amount × BTC/USD rate = USD value
For example, if you hold 0.025 BTC and the selected rate is $60,000 per BTC at the time you are measuring it, the conversion is 0.025 × $60,000 = $1,500. This is an illustration, not a current quote or a tax calculation.

Bitcoin prices move continuously. Exchanges may show different prices, and data providers may aggregate markets differently, so a dollar figure without a source and time is incomplete. For a tax valuation, IRS Notice 2014-21 says to convert listed virtual currency into U.S. dollars using an exchange rate applied in a reasonable and consistent manner: IRS Notice 2014-21.

- Record the BTC quantity, USD rate, date and time, and the exchange or market-data source.
- Use a method consistently rather than selecting whichever quote produces a preferred result.
- For past transactions, use historical data that matches the transaction date and the time granularity you need. CoinGecko describes its historical-data options and coverage here: CoinGecko historical crypto market data and Bitcoin price history. It is one possible data source, not an official or exclusive tax valuation source.
Calculate the gain or loss on a sale
A conversion tells you the dollar value of an amount of Bitcoin. A sale’s amount realized tells you what you received, while gain or loss compares that amount with your adjusted basis. Under the IRS’s digital-asset guidance, amount realized generally accounts for cash and applicable services received, reduced by transaction costs allocable to the disposition. Gain or loss is the difference between amount realized and adjusted basis: IRS FAQs on digital asset transactions.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Gain or loss = amount realized − adjusted basis
For a simple sale, suppose your adjusted basis in the Bitcoin sold is $1,200 and the amount realized after applicable disposition costs is $1,450. The resulting gain is $250. If the amount realized were $1,100 instead, the result would be a $100 loss. These examples simplify the calculation; your actual basis and eligible costs depend on the transaction and your circumstances.
Establish the correct basis
Basis is not the asset’s value today. For purchased virtual currency, it generally starts with the U.S.-dollar amount paid, including acquisition fees, commissions, and other acquisition costs. If you received digital assets in another way, different rules can apply. For example, service income is generally valued in dollars when received. Keep the records from the original purchase or receipt rather than replacing them with a current price. See the IRS’s digital assets guidance and virtual currency FAQs.

For peer-to-peer transactions or other transactions not facilitated by an exchange, IRS guidance describes fair market value at the time recorded on the distributed ledger. Explorer-based evidence may be used when it accurately represents the value: IRS FAQs on virtual currency transactions.
Account for transaction costs carefully
Some costs can affect the calculation, but not every crypto fee is treated alike. IRS guidance describes qualifying costs for services that effect a purchase, sale, or disposition, including certain transaction or gas fees, transfer taxes, and commissions. Costs for moving assets between your own wallets are treated differently from costs that effect a disposition. Do not assume every network fee reduces a gain; identify what the fee paid for and retain the associated record. See the IRS digital asset transaction FAQs.

Keep records that support the conversion and calculation
A useful record lets you reconstruct both the USD value and the tax calculation. Save the source data or transaction statement when possible, not only a number copied into a spreadsheet.
- Asset type and quantity
- Transaction date and time
- USD fair market value and the source or exchange rate used
- Acquisition or receipt details and basis information
- Sale, exchange, disposition, or transfer details
- Fees and what each fee was for

What Form 1099-DA does—and does not—tell you
Form 1099-DA reports proceeds from covered broker transactions and, in some cases, basis. It may not contain your complete basis history, especially where acquisition details are outside the broker’s records. Use your own transaction records to check the figures. Receiving the form does not remove your obligation to report applicable digital-asset income, gains, or losses. See IRS: Understanding your Form 1099-DA.
Where digital-asset transactions fit on a federal tax return
For applicable digital assets held as capital assets, the IRS directs taxpayers to report dispositions on Form 8949 and summarize capital gains and losses on Schedule D. Other digital-asset income, including some staking, mining, or service receipts, may be reported differently. The right treatment depends on the transaction and taxpayer’s circumstances. Consult the current instructions for the relevant tax year; the IRS’s Instructions for Form 8949 discuss digital assets as property under general tax principles.
