Convert AVI or WMV files only when their codecs or playback compatibility require it; changing the filename extension does not convert a video. First inspect each file, then either remux or transcode it into a dependable playback format, and finally loop it through streaming software that sends an encoder feed to YouTube Live. A looped file is not, by itself, a guarantee that a stream will stay up unattended around the clock.
How the conversion and live stream fit together
AVI and WMV identify container or file families, not one fixed combination of video and audio codecs. Two files with the same extension may need different handling. Conversion prepares a file for playback; live encoding turns playback into a real-time feed and sends it to YouTube. These are separate jobs.

A broadly compatible target for playback is an MP4 container with H.264 video and AAC audio, but treat that as a starting point, not a guarantee. Inspect the source first and choose settings that suit its codecs, dimensions, frame rate, audio, and the quality you need. YouTube’s live-ingest codec requirements apply to the encoder feed, not automatically to the files you upload or open locally.
Inspect each file before converting
Use a media inspector such as FFmpeg’s ffprobe to check the video and audio streams, dimensions, frame rate, duration, rotation metadata, and whether an audio stream exists. This helps you identify incompatible or unusual source characteristics before choosing an output format.

FFmpeg can read and convert media, but support for a particular codec can depend on the FFmpeg build and the file itself. Consult the FFmpeg documentation for input, stream selection, and output options. There is no single conversion command that guarantees the same result for every AVI or WMV file.
Choose between remuxing and transcoding
Try stream copy when the codecs already work
If the audio and video codecs are already suitable for your playback software and only the container needs to change, a stream copy (also called remuxing) can avoid another lossy encode. Check that the resulting container and streams work in your chosen player before relying on them for a continuous stream.
Transcode when playback compatibility requires it
When codecs need to change, FFmpeg decodes and encodes the streams again. The FFmpeg Project explains: “Transcoding is the process of decoding a stream and then encoding it again.” It is computationally expensive and, in most cases, loses some quality because the process is lossy. Preserve an untouched source copy, and avoid needlessly re-encoding a file that already plays correctly.

FFmpeg documents ffmpeg -i input.avi output.mp4 as a basic conversion example. It is not a promise that every input will produce the desired quality or playback compatibility: the output defaults and the source streams matter. Inspect the result and adjust output options for the actual file. For WMV, use the WMV file as the input and choose an output container and codecs appropriate to your playback chain; changing .wmv to .mp4 in the filename alone does not convert it.
Make the converted video repeat
Loop one file in OBS
- Open OBS and add a Media Source to the scene that will feed your stream.
- Select the converted video file in the source settings and enable Loop.
- Confirm the file starts, reaches its end, and starts again. Check that the picture and audio behave as expected at the loop point.
OBS’s Media Sources documentation lists AVI as a supported video type and describes Loop as making the file play again after playback completes. That does not establish that every WMV codec variant works with every system decoder. Test your actual file in OBS. A playlist source or a prebuilt program can be used for multiple clips; check every transition rather than assuming clips will join cleanly.
Join a sequence with FFmpeg when appropriate
For a sequence of clips, FFmpeg’s FAQ describes two approaches: the concat filter when re-encoding is needed, and the concat demuxer when re-encoding is not desired and the formats permit it. Clip parameters must be compatible for a clean join. If they differ, normalize or re-encode as needed, then test the joins for gaps, abrupt audio changes, or black frames. See the FFmpeg FAQ.

Configure the encoder for YouTube Live
In your streaming software, select YouTube Live and use the provided stream setup details, preferably the RTMPS server option where available. Keep your stream key private. YouTube says an encoder converts video to a digital format for streaming and “will automatically detect which encoder settings you chose.” Verify the preview and health indicators rather than assuming a successful local playback means the YouTube feed is healthy. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video for RTMP/RTMPS ingest; AAC or MP3 audio; frame rates up to 60 fps; CBR bitrate encoding; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. RTMPS is the encrypted RTMP option. The supported encoder feed settings are separate from the format of your source file. Review YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions before configuring your software because its recommendations can change.
Set bitrate to match output and upload capacity
Choose the resolution and frame rate you intend to send, then set a bitrate within your connection’s stable upstream capacity. YouTube’s H.264 guidance lists these examples:

- Superfast Video Conversion Into More than 150 Formats
- HD on the go: Adjust video formats to your output device
- Edit videos: Trimming, cutting, effects, subtitles
- Highest quality, even in HD, 4K and 3D

| Output | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published H.264 settings, not universal values for every codec, frame rate, or network. A connection that cannot sustain the selected bitrate may cause stream-health problems; choose settings your upstream can reliably maintain.

YouTube’s live-streaming getting-started guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days; age requirements also apply. Check Get started with live streaming for current eligibility details.
Before making the stream public, run a test and verify the YouTube preview, audio, movement, loop point or playlist transitions, and stream-health messages. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event. If you record locally as a backup, confirm that the recording exists and plays.

What a DIY 24/7 setup can and cannot guarantee
OBS looping repeats the configured media source; it does not ensure a resilient 24/7 stream. A computer must keep running the encoder, the network connection and power must hold, the software must remain healthy, and the content must be cleared for use. A stream that stops can require attention unless you have a recovery plan and monitoring. Do not treat a successful short test as proof of unattended reliability.
Copyright and channel-policy checks
Before looping a recording, make sure you have the rights needed to stream its video and audio. A file playing correctly says nothing about whether you may broadcast it. YouTube’s copyright and channel rules can affect a live stream or channel; review the rules that apply to your content and check your channel’s status before scheduling a long-running broadcast.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a home computer and connection responsible for keeping the encoder running, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded video, not a live camera feed.
- Nothing has to stay on at home: the stream runs in the cloud.
- One flat price per slot covers any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, without re-encoding or quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free, with no card required (one free day per account).
Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops, and support from the StreamNeo team. The same features apply on each plan; only the billing period changes. The monthly plan is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are accepted in India; card checkout is available worldwide.
