You can convert a supported ownCloud installation to Nextcloud as a controlled, in-place manual upgrade—not as a normal one-click version update. The current Nextcloud Administration Manual maps ownCloud 10.13.x, 10.14.x, 10.15.x, and 10.16.x to Nextcloud 34.0.0. Verify that compatibility table immediately before production work because supported bridge releases change.
Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
The safe sequence is: inventory the server, test-restorable backups, choose the exact bridge release, plan a PHP change and maintenance window, replace the application code while preserving configuration and data, run the upgrade and database repair commands, then test users, shares, authentication, storage, apps, and background jobs before moving to newer Nextcloud majors.

What this conversion actually does
Nextcloud treats an ownCloud conversion as a migration between closely related codebases and database schemas. It is supported only when the source ownCloud version and target Nextcloud release are compatible. A random combination of versions can leave the database or files unusable, so do not download the newest Nextcloud package and point it at an arbitrary ownCloud installation.
During a supported conversion, Nextcloud reuses the existing database, configuration, users, files and most application settings. The server enters maintenance mode while the schema and code are changed, so users cannot log in during the operation. Large installations can remain unavailable for hours.

Choose the supported bridge release
The current stable compatibility mapping is:
| Source ownCloud version | Mapped Nextcloud target | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 10.13.x | Nextcloud 34.0.0 | Use this bridge only after confirming the current administration manual. |
| 10.14.x | Nextcloud 34.0.0 | Use this bridge only after confirming the current administration manual. |
| 10.15.x | Nextcloud 34.0.0 | Use this bridge only after confirming the current administration manual. |
| 10.16.x | Nextcloud 34.0.0 | Use this bridge only after confirming the current administration manual. |
If your ownCloud release is older than those listed, do not guess an intermediate version. Follow the documented ownCloud upgrade path until you reach a release that the current Nextcloud table supports, or choose a fresh Nextcloud deployment and migrate data. Compatibility, PHP requirements and app availability are release-specific and should be checked again immediately before the change.
Inventory the installation before touching it
Record enough detail that another administrator could rebuild the service. At minimum, capture:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- The exact ownCloud version and edition.
- PHP version, enabled extensions and the PHP binary used by the web server and cron.
- Database engine, server version, database name, user and character set.
- Web server, virtual-host configuration, TLS termination and the HTTP service account.
- The absolute data-directory path and available free space.
- Whether the deployment is an archive install, Docker container, Snap, virtual machine image, operating-system package or Windows Server deployment.
- Enabled ownCloud apps, manually installed code and modifications to core files.
- Cron mode or another background-job method.
- LDAP or other directory configuration, external storage mounts, encryption, federated and public shares, quotas and mail settings.
Save copies of the current configuration and a list of enabled apps outside the server. Note any custom themes, reverse-proxy rules, PHP overrides and scheduled jobs; these are common reasons a technically successful code conversion still fails at the web layer.
Make backups that can actually be restored
Back up all three of the items Nextcloud specifically identifies for an ownCloud migration: the config/ directory, the complete database and the entire data directory. Preserve the original ownCloud application tree as well. Keep the backups on separate storage with permissions and ownership information intact.
A backup is not proven until you perform a separate restore test. Restore the database and a representative copy of the configuration and data into an isolated system, confirm that the files and database are readable, and document the exact restore commands. The migration manual warns that a backup of configuration, database and data is especially important when moving from ownCloud to Nextcloud; it does not make an untested backup safe by itself.
Record the maintenance start time, backup locations, database credentials, service-account name and the steps for putting the old site back online. Keep this material until the final Nextcloud version has passed validation, not merely until the first login works.

Check PHP and schedule the outage
Install the PHP version supported by the selected Nextcloud bridge before starting the conversion. ownCloud does not support PHP 8.0 or newer, so changing PHP first can make the old site inaccessible before Nextcloud code is in place. That is expected during a planned conversion, but it must be communicated and scheduled.
Announce a maintenance window long enough for the database upgrade and validation. Disable automated deployment jobs and client onboarding during the window. Ensure the web-server user can read the new application tree and write to the configuration, data and required application directories. On a large instance, allow additional time for file-cache changes and background jobs.
Use the procedure for your installation type
Do not blindly apply archive-install instructions to every deployment. Snap, Docker, pre-built virtual machines and operating-system packages have their own update procedures; changing files inside a managed image or container can be overwritten or leave the package inconsistent. Windows Server has a documented limitation: the migration page supports moving the data, but not upgrading the server installation beyond that. For Windows, plan a supported fresh installation and data migration rather than an in-place code swap.
The following sequence describes an archive-style Linux installation. Adapt the service account, paths and commands to your environment.

1. Freeze changes and enter maintenance mode
- Stop uploads, integrations and deployment automation.
- From the Nextcloud application root, enable maintenance mode using the web-service account. A typical command is
sudo -u www-data php occ maintenance:mode --on. Replacewww-dataand the path with the account and PHP binary used by your installation. - Confirm that a browser request shows the maintenance page and that no client is still writing files.
2. Take the final backup
With writes stopped, dump the database, copy config/ and copy the complete data directory. Label this set with the source ownCloud version and timestamp. Do not overwrite the earlier restore-tested backup until the new set has been checked.
3. Preserve configuration and data
Extract the compatible Nextcloud release into a new application directory or a staging location. Do not delete config/config.php or the data directory. Keep a copy of the original ownCloud code tree so that rollback restores a coherent old application, not a mixture of old and new files.

4. Replace the application code
Switch the document root to the compatible Nextcloud code, or replace the old application files according to the archive-install instructions. Preserve the existing config/, data path and any directories required by the selected Nextcloud release. Set ownership and permissions for the HTTP account, then verify that the web server and command-line PHP use the intended versions.
5. Run the normal upgrade
From the new application root, run the upgrade as the web-service user, for example sudo -u www-data php occ upgrade. Read every error and save the command output. Do not repeatedly rerun a failed migration without identifying the failed step and checking the database and logs.
6. Repair database structures
After the upgrade completes, run these maintenance commands from the same application root and with the same service account:
sudo -u www-data php occ db:convert-filecache-bigintsudo -u www-data php occ db:add-missing-columnssudo -u www-data php occ db:add-missing-indicessudo -u www-data php occ db:add-missing-primary-keys
Use the PHP executable supported by the target release. If a command reports an existing structure or a non-fatal condition, record it; if it reports a failed query, stop and investigate before allowing users back in.
7. Review apps and background jobs
Apps from the ownCloud marketplace can be disabled because they are incompatible with Nextcloud. Re-enable only apps that have a supported Nextcloud version, and reinstall or configure the Nextcloud equivalent where necessary. Calendar and Contacts are examples of apps that may need to be re-enabled after migration; every third-party app requires its own compatibility check.
Review the old crontab. If it invoked an ownCloud-specific occ system:cron command, change it to the PHP command required by Nextcloud’s configured background-job method. Run one job manually and confirm that the log shows successful execution before turning the schedule back on.

What normally migrates, and what needs work
Nextcloud states that nearly all ownCloud settings migrate during the upgrade. The migration page specifically includes internal and public link shares, user settings, app configuration, LDAP and external-storage settings.
| Area | Expected result | Required follow-up |
|---|---|---|
| Users and personal settings | Normally retained. | Test representative accounts, quotas, passwords and profile settings. |
| Internal and public shares | Normally retained. | Open existing links as both an owner and a recipient; verify permissions and expiration. |
| LDAP | Configuration normally migrates. | Test login, group mapping, search base, TLS and attribute mapping. |
| External storage | Configuration normally migrates. | Test credentials, mounts, read/write access and failure behavior. |
| App settings | Most settings migrate, but apps may be disabled. | Install or enable supported Nextcloud versions and review each app’s data. |
| File Retention, File Firewall, File Automated Tagging, File Drop and SharePoint | These ownCloud proprietary extensions may not have a drop-in equivalent. | Plan a Nextcloud replacement and reconfigure policies, tags, drop folders or integrations. |
| Custom code and themes | Not guaranteed to work. | Remove or port modifications before enabling users. |
Validation checklist before reopening the service
Validation should use real but non-destructive test cases from several account types. Check:
- Administrator and ordinary-user login, logout and password changes.
- A representative set of small files, large files, folders, deleted files and versions.
- Browser downloads, uploads, previews and WebDAV access.
- Desktop and mobile client synchronization, including a conflict test.
- Internal shares, public links, recipient permissions, expiration dates and download restrictions.
- LDAP login and group membership if a directory is used.
- Every external-storage mount, including a write and a read from a test folder.
- Encryption status and access to encrypted files, if encryption was enabled.
- Calendar, Contacts and other business-critical apps after installing supported versions.
- Background jobs, file scans, previews, notifications and outgoing mail.
- Web-server logs, Nextcloud logs and the Security & setup warnings panel.
- Database growth, file-cache errors, permissions and available disk space.
These checks are operational safeguards, not a substitute for the compatibility table. A clean administrator login does not prove that clients, shares, LDAP or external storage survived.

Move from the bridge release to current Nextcloud
Do not jump directly from the bridge to an arbitrary current major release. First bring the bridge to its latest point release, then upgrade one major version at a time using the built-in updater or the update method appropriate for the installation type. Run background jobs between major upgrades and recheck PHP requirements at every step.
Keep the original ownCloud backup until the final target version has completed validation. Point releases can alter supported PHP versions, database requirements and app compatibility, so repeat the app review and the representative-user tests after each major upgrade.

When a fresh Nextcloud deployment is safer
A direct conversion preserves more existing state but couples the result to the old server’s database, permissions, PHP setup and app history. A fresh deployment takes more planning but can reduce legacy code and make rollback clearer.
| Decision factor | Direct conversion | Fresh Nextcloud deployment |
|---|---|---|
| Supported version path | Requires an exact ownCloud-to-Nextcloud bridge. | Starts with a supported Nextcloud release; data and settings are migrated separately. |
| Downtime | Usually one maintenance window, potentially hours for a large database. | Can be built and tested in parallel, with a shorter final cutover if planned well. |
| Users and shares | Usually retained in place. | Require a migration plan and verification of links and permissions. |
| LDAP and external storage | Settings normally carry over but still require testing. | Must be recreated or imported and tested on the new host. |
| PHP and database work | Existing environment must meet the bridge requirements. | New environment can be designed for the target release. |
| App compatibility | Incompatible ownCloud apps may be disabled during conversion. | Only supported Nextcloud apps need to be installed, but their data may need mapping. |
| Rollback | Requires restoring the old code, database and data as one consistent set. | Old service can remain untouched until cutover, simplifying fallback. |
| Installation method | Must follow the existing deployment type’s procedure. | Allows a change of platform, such as moving from a package to a container, if supported. |
Choose a fresh deployment when the source version has no documented bridge, the server is heavily customized, Windows Server limits an in-place upgrade, or you need to change operating system, PHP architecture or deployment method at the same time.
Rollback and common failure modes
The new site shows a blank page or PHP error
Check the PHP version, required extensions, web-server error log, file ownership and the document-root path. A PHP upgrade can make the old ownCloud code fail before the Nextcloud tree is selected. Do not solve this by mixing files from both applications.
The upgrade stops on a database query
Keep maintenance mode enabled. Save the exact error, check database connectivity and available space, and compare the schema state with the migration output. Restore the pre-migration database and application tree only if you have decided to abandon the conversion; do not repeatedly run destructive commands without a recovery point.
An app is missing or disabled
That usually indicates that the ownCloud app is not compatible with Nextcloud. Find a supported Nextcloud edition of the app, reinstall it and verify its data and configuration. If no equivalent exists, export the information where possible and plan a replacement rather than forcing the old code to load.
Clients repeatedly report conflicts
First confirm that the server’s file cache, permissions, timestamps and background jobs are healthy. Test one account through WebDAV and the web interface, then reconnect clients only after server-side errors have stopped.

In-place downgrades are unsupported and can corrupt the database. Roll back by restoring the original ownCloud application tree, configuration, database and data from a consistent backup, or build a fresh supported installation and restore the data there. Never copy a newer Nextcloud database into an older ownCloud codebase.
Professional migration assistance
Nextcloud describes its migration tool as the easiest migration route and offers a special ownCloud-to-Nextcloud migration service. Enterprise customers may receive migration support, and partners can provide custom enterprise migrations. Availability, scope and pricing depend on the deployment and contract, so treat these as service options rather than a guaranteed free program for every installation.
Final go/no-go test
Proceed with an in-place conversion only when the exact ownCloud release appears in the current compatibility table, the target’s PHP and database requirements are met, backups have passed a restore test, the installation method has a documented procedure, and you have a maintenance window plus a tested rollback plan. If any of those conditions is missing, a fresh Nextcloud deployment is the lower-risk route.
