To convert an image to JPG, open it in an image app and use Export or Save As to select JPEG. Changing a filename from .png, .heic, or another extension to .jpg does not convert the image data; it only changes the name. Keep the original, export a new JPEG, and check the result before sharing it.
What “convert an image file extension to JPG” means
JPG and JPEG are two common filename extensions for the same image format: JPEG. Microsoft lists .jpg, .jpeg, and .jpe for its JPEG codec and identifies its MIME type as image/jpeg (Microsoft Windows Imaging Component codecs). MDN also lists .jif and .jfif as extensions associated with JPEG (MDN: Image file type and format guide).
An extension is part of a filename that helps software decide how to handle a file; it does not itself change the file’s contents. Apple Developer notes that operating systems commonly base decisions on a file’s path extension (Apple Developer: Explore Uniform Type Identifiers). Conversion is different: an application reads the source image and writes new data encoded as JPEG.
Convert the image with an app
- Keep an unchanged copy of the original. Exporting to JPEG can discard image information, and you may want the source format later.
- Open the image in an application that can read it. Choose an app with an Export, Save As, or equivalent format option. For HEIF images on a Mac, Apple documents using Photos or Preview.
- Choose the format command. Select File > Export, Save As, or the app’s equivalent. Pick JPEG or JPG as the output format, not merely as text in the filename.
- Set quality if the app offers it. A higher setting generally retains more detail but may produce a larger file. JPEG is lossy, so the exported image will not preserve all the source data.
- Give the output a new name ending in
.jpgor.jpeg. Save it in a place where you can distinguish it from the original. - Open the exported file and inspect it. Check its appearance, dimensions, and how transparency was handled. If it is for a website or form, confirm that the destination accepts JPEG or
image/jpeg.
Steps for Mac, iPhone, Windows, and other devices
macOS: export an HEIF image as JPEG
For an HEIF image, Apple’s documented route is to open it in Photos or Preview, then choose File > Export, select JPEG, and save (Apple Support: Using HEIF or HEVC media on Apple devices). The export makes a JPEG copy; it does not require renaming the HEIF original.

iPhone or iPad: make future camera photos JPEG
To have future camera photos use JPEG, go to Settings > Camera > Formats and select Most Compatible. High Efficiency uses HEIF for photos. This setting affects new captures; it is not a conversion of images already saved in HEIF. Apple’s support page describes HEIF/HEVC support arriving with iOS 11 and macOS High Sierra 10.13 as historical platform information, not a claim about every current device’s settings or behavior (Apple Support).
Windows and other systems
Use an installed image editor or viewer that can open your source format and offers JPEG in its export or save options. Windows includes a native JPEG codec through Windows Imaging Component, but the menu names and available formats depend on the application you use (Microsoft Windows Imaging Component codecs). If the app cannot open the source, first use a trusted app with support for that format rather than changing the extension.
Choose the right output settings
Quality and file size
JPEG is a lossy format, well suited to many photographs, but it can look poor for sharp diagrams, charts, or artwork with crisp edges. MDN describes JPEG as lossy and notes that such graphics may not be satisfactory in the format (MDN image format guide). Use the highest practical quality if you expect to edit the exported copy again, and retain the original for future edits.

There is no dependable universal percentage by which a conversion will shrink or enlarge a file. The result depends on the original format, dimensions, image content, and encoder settings. For example, Apple says HEIF can provide better compression than JPEG at the same visual quality, so converting HEIF to JPEG may increase storage use even when the image looks similar (Apple Support).

Microsoft documents an ImageQuality range of 0.0 (lowest fidelity) to 1.0 (highest fidelity), with a default of 0.9 for its native JPEG codec; that is a codec setting, not a universal slider scale or required setting for every program (Microsoft: JPEG Compression Quality).
Transparency and image dimensions
JPEG does not preserve transparency. If the source has transparent areas, the exporting app must represent them against a solid background or otherwise handle them according to its own export behavior. Preview the result against the background you expect; a transparent logo that looked correct over a dark page may show an unexpected solid area after export.

Conversion does not inherently require resizing. Check the output dimensions after export, especially if the image will be uploaded to a service with size limits. Do not assume that choosing JPEG also changes the image’s pixel dimensions or meets a particular platform’s requirements.
Local apps versus online converters
A local app can convert files without uploading them to a third-party conversion site, which is preferable for identity documents, private photos, client work, or regulated material. An online converter may be convenient when you cannot install an app, but uploading means trusting that service with the file. Review its retention and deletion terms before sending sensitive images.

JPEG is broadly compatible with browsers, but compatibility does not guarantee that every upload form accepts every file size or dimension (MDN image format guide). Follow the destination’s own file requirements.

Common problems and fixes
- The renamed file will not open: The extension changed, but the contents did not. Reopen the original in an image app and export it as JPEG.
- The output still has the old format: Check the app’s selected export format, not just the name field. Some applications retain the source format unless JPEG is explicitly selected.
- The app cannot open the source: Its decoder may not support that format. Try an application that explicitly supports the source type, or use the operating system’s documented workflow where available.
- Transparent areas turned white or another color: JPEG has no transparency channel. Choose the desired background in the export app if it provides that control, then inspect the output.
- The image looks blocky or has halos: JPEG compression can damage fine edges, text, and repeated patterns. Export again at a higher quality from the original, not from a previously compressed JPEG.
- The file got larger: This can happen when converting a more storage-efficient source such as HEIF to JPEG. Do not expect a fixed size reduction; compare the actual output and only resize if the destination allows and your use case permits it.
- A website rejects the file: Confirm that the file is truly JPEG, that the extension and encoded content agree, and that its dimensions and size meet the site’s stated limits. Some sites require
.jpg, even though.jpegidentifies the same format. - An online converter is unsuitable for a sensitive image: Stop before uploading and use a local application instead, unless you have verified the service’s privacy and deletion terms.

Keep the source; use JPEG when compatibility calls for it
Use an app’s actual export or save-as format control, preserve the original, and inspect the exported copy. JPEG can be a practical choice when a website or recipient requires it, but it is lossy and does not retain transparency. For photos already in HEIF, keeping the more storage-efficient original may be worthwhile when broad compatibility is not required.

Are JPG and JPEG different formats?
No. They are filename extensions used for the JPEG image format.
Can I convert a whole folder at once?
It depends on the image app. Check whether it offers batch export and whether you can set the output format and quality for all selected files.
Will converting to JPG remove location or camera metadata?
That depends on the application and export settings. Check the app’s metadata options if retaining or removing that information matters.
