Windows 11 version 24H2 and later no longer include the AC-3 codec by default, but some PCs have it preinstalled and upgrades from earlier Windows releases retain it. If your destination app cannot decode the audio, convert it with a tool such as FFmpeg to a format that app supports—such as PCM audio in a WAV file or AAC in an M4A file.
Why an AC-3 file may not play on Windows
AC-3, also called Dolby Digital, is a multichannel audio codec. Microsoft says it is no longer included by default beginning with Windows 11 version 24H2. A PC may still have it if its manufacturer preinstalled the codec or if Windows was upgraded from an earlier release. The result depends on the Windows installation and the app being used, not just the file extension. See Microsoft’s Windows Media Player troubleshooting guidance.

- Check your Windows version: run
winverand note the release shown. - Check the app: look up its supported audio formats. Windows Media Player’s list, for example, includes AAC, M4A and WAV, but that does not establish support in every Windows or third-party app. The list is at Microsoft’s supported file types page.
- Identify the file’s contents: a filename ending in
.ac3does not establish whether a particular player can decode its audio. If the audio is inside a video file, the video container and its other streams matter too.
Microsoft documents a Windows Dolby decoder that accepts AC-3, but that API documentation does not mean every app can use the decoder on every Windows installation. A different player that supports the file may be enough; conversion is necessary only when the intended app cannot handle the input.
Choose an output format your app accepts
A codec encodes or decodes audio; a container holds audio and may hold other streams. WAV is a container, not a promise that its audio is uncompressed: playback depends on the codec stored inside it. The examples below explicitly choose the audio codec as well as the output extension. They are command-line examples, not playback-tested results. Check your destination app’s requirements and your FFmpeg build before relying on a particular output.

Windows Media Player’s documented support for AAC and M4A is specific to that player; confirm compatibility with the exact app and device you plan to use. FFmpeg accepts input files with -i, while the codec options and output filename specify the conversion target. Its documentation also notes that available encoders can vary by build: FFmpeg command-line documentation and FFmpeg codecs and examples.
Convert a standalone AC-3 audio file
- Install or open an FFmpeg build that is available in your command prompt or terminal. Confirm that it includes the encoder needed for your chosen output, particularly if you plan to create AAC.
- Open a command prompt or terminal in the folder containing the source file, or provide full paths to the input and output files.
- Run one of the commands in the table, replacing
input.ac3and the output filename with your actual filenames. Choose only one target format. - Open the output in the exact destination app and listen through the relevant device. Check that the audio plays and that its channel layout is suitable.
If you need a stereo output, add -ac 2 to the command, for example: ffmpeg -i input.ac3 -ac 2 -c:a pcm_s16le output.wav. This requests a two-channel downmix; it changes the channel layout, so use it only when stereo is appropriate. AC-3 can contain multichannel audio, and retaining surround channels is useful only if the destination supports them.

Convert AC-3 audio inside a video
The standalone commands above are for audio-only input. For a video containing AC-3, do not change the filename extension and assume the audio has been converted: renaming does not transcode anything. Decide whether to preserve the video and other streams, select the intended audio stream, and choose a container accepted by the receiving app. FFmpeg supports stream selection and codec options, but the appropriate command depends on the source streams and the target container; check the FFmpeg documentation and the receiving app’s format requirements before converting.

Check the converted file
- Open it in the app where it will actually be used, not only in a different player.
- Confirm that sound is present and that stereo or surround playback matches what you need.
- If FFmpeg reports that an encoder is unavailable, use a build with the required encoder or choose an output format supported by an encoder in your build.
- If the output still fails in the destination app, verify that both the container and the audio codec are supported; a familiar extension alone is not enough.
