You can add a PDF download link to a WordPress page or post with the HTML to PDF Converter plugin and Html2Pdf.app. Install and activate the plugin, connect it to an Html2Pdf.app API key in WordPress, then add a shortcode or enable the plugin’s automatic button. Because Html2Pdf.app fetches the page itself, the page must be publicly accessible without a login or HTTP authentication.
How the WordPress-to-PDF workflow works
The plugin is a WordPress front end to Html2Pdf.app’s hosted conversion API, not a local PDF converter. When a visitor requests a PDF, the service fetches and renders the page using the selected settings. The page URL and conversion settings are sent to the service. Set up the plugin and add a PDF button
- In your WordPress dashboard, go to Plugins → Add New Plugin, search for HTML to PDF Converter, install it, and select Activate. Confirm the plugin’s name and publisher in the directory listing before installing.
- Go to Settings → HTML to PDF. Enter your Html2Pdf.app API key and use the settings page’s connection test. Get an API key through Html2Pdf.app’s WordPress plugin instructions.
- To place a button manually, add this shortcode in the page or post content where it should appear:
[html2pdf text="Save as PDF"] - To enable a button automatically, use the plugin’s setting for selected post types, then choose its position and label. The plugin listing describes this option alongside the shortcode.
- Open the published page as a visitor and test the button. Check that the PDF opens or downloads and that its content and layout are correct.
The shortcode’s text attribute sets the button label. To use the theme’s print layout rather than screen styling, set media to print: [html2pdf text="Download PDF" media="print"]. The plugin documentation also describes page format, orientation, margins, and custom dimensions.
Make sure the page can be fetched
Html2Pdf.app must be able to reach the target page from the public internet. A localhost URL, HTTP-authenticated staging site, password-protected page, or private post will not be available to the service as a public visitor. These access restrictions can result in a failed or empty PDF.

Do not publish a page merely to test it if its contents should remain private. Instead, test with a representative public page. The plugin listing explains that its external API fetches the page itself: HTML to PDF Converter on WordPress.org.
Control the PDF layout
Choose screen or print styling
Use media="print" when the site’s print stylesheet is designed to remove navigation, simplify typography, or reorganize content for paper. Use screen when you want the regular on-screen styling. The shortcode’s media attribute can override the plugin’s default. A media-mode change can alter the page substantially, so inspect an actual generated PDF.
Hide elements that should stay on the page
Add the CSS class html2pdf_hide to elements that should appear on the web page but not in the PDF—for example, a navigation block or a related-content module. The class is documented by the plugin; confirm that the selected element is omitted in the output.

Set paper size and orientation
The plugin documents formats including A4, Letter, and Legal, portrait and landscape orientation, margins, and custom dimensions. Choose a format for the intended audience and content: a wide table may need landscape, while a standard article generally suits portrait. Exact setting labels can vary with plugin versions; use the controls shown on the installed settings page.
Protect the API key and understand data handling
Keep the Html2Pdf.app API key on the server side. Its documentation says to use the key from a backend, server-side script, or trusted job—not browser JavaScript, a public repository, or a client-side template. The WordPress plugin settings are the intended place for the plugin’s connection.
Html2Pdf.app says generated PDFs are processed temporarily and are not permanently stored on its servers. Its documentation also says raw HTML or text submitted through the html parameter is not stored in conversion logs, while selected request metadata and a source URL may be retained. Cost, credits, and plan limits

The provider says one credit covers each 5 MB chunk of generated PDF and that credits reset on the first day of each month. The Free plan includes customization options and the plugin; paid plans list unlimited PDF size. These figures are provider-published plan terms, not a promise that every conversion will consume the same number of credits: check the pricing page for applicable terms.
Troubleshoot failed or empty PDFs
- The PDF is empty or conversion fails: Check that the page is public and opens without a login, password protection, or HTTP authentication. The service cannot fetch a private or local page as a public visitor.
- The connection test fails: Recheck the API key in Settings → HTML to PDF, then run the test again. If it still fails, consult the provider’s API documentation and confirm the account or key is active.
- The PDF has the wrong layout or missing sections: Try the other media mode, then inspect the site’s print CSS for rules that hide or change the content. Check whether an element has the
html2pdf_hideclass. - Fonts, images, or other resources differ: The API documentation notes that media mode, available fonts and resources, and JavaScript load timing can affect rendering. Make sure assets are reachable to the service and test pages with the same kinds of content you expect visitors to convert.
- A page works in the browser but not in conversion: Browser access does not prove that the service can fetch the page without authentication or that scripts and resources finish loading in time. Test a public page and compare the rendered output before publishing the button broadly.
