Open the .doc or .docx file in LibreOffice Writer, then choose File > Export As > Export as PDF. For a quick conversion without reviewing settings, use File > Export As > Export Directly as PDF. Save the PDF, open it, and check its pages before sharing.
Convert a Word document to PDF with LibreOffice Writer
LibreOffice Writer can open Microsoft Word 97–2003 .doc files and Word 2007–365 .docx files. You can export a separate PDF, leaving the original Word document available for editing.

- Install and open LibreOffice, then open the Word document in Writer.
- For a quick export, select File > Export As > Export Directly as PDF. You can also use the matching toolbar button if it is visible.
- Choose a file name and save location, then export.
If you need to control the output, select File > Export As > Export as PDF instead. Review the available settings, export, and save the resulting file.

Settings to consider
The PDF export dialog includes options for page ranges, image compression and resolution, tagged PDF, PDF/A, bookmarks, comments, and PDF forms. Choose settings for the document’s purpose rather than assuming the defaults are right for every file. For example, if you need an accessible PDF, use relevant tagging and accessibility options, then validate the exported file; choosing an export option alone does not guarantee accessibility.

Check the PDF before sending it
Open the exported PDF and compare it with the original Word document. Pay particular attention to page breaks, fonts, tables, columns, images, headers, footers, and hyperlinks. If something shifted, correct the document in Writer and export it again.
There is no comparative conversion test establishing that one of these options preserves every layout better than another. A PDF is useful for sharing a document that recipients do not need to edit, but an ordinary exported PDF is not inherently protected against editing or tampering.

Use a browser converter if you do not want to install software
Adobe advertises an online Word-to-PDF converter that accepts DOC and DOCX files. It may suit you if you prefer a browser workflow, but check Adobe’s current terms before uploading: the available service-page information does not establish current account requirements, free-use limits, file retention, or privacy terms. Do not upload confidential or regulated documents until you have checked how the service handles them.

Options that still involve Microsoft Word
Word for the web can save an open Word document as a PDF, but it is still a Microsoft Word service, so it does not meet a strict requirement to convert without Word.

Adobe Acrobat desktop is not a documented Word-free workaround for DOC or DOCX conversion: Adobe’s format requirements say the corresponding Microsoft Office version must be installed. The Acrobat support page carrying that requirement was last updated September 23, 2025.
