How to Convert a PSD to PNG on Windows, Mac, or Linux

Learn how to export a PSD as PNG, preserve transparency where supported, and choose a desktop, command-line or automated workflow.

To convert a PSD to PNG, open it in Photoshop and choose File > Save As, then select PNG and save. PNG can retain transparent areas, but it does not retain Photoshop’s editable layers: the export is a flattened image. Keep the PSD as your editable master.

Choose a conversion method

Method Best for Important consideration
Photoshop A straightforward desktop export when Photoshop is available Adobe documents the Save As workflow; PNG flattens layers and edits.
Krita A graphical alternative when you do not have Photoshop Krita can open PSD and save PNG, but its manual warns that PSD compatibility outside Photoshop is incomplete.
ImageMagick Terminal-based workflows Its format list supports PSD read/write and PNG, but does not guarantee the appearance of every complex PSD.
Photoshop API Automated or developer workflows Adobe documents PSD-to-PNG conversion options, including transparency; this is not the simplest route for a one-off desktop export.

Convert a PSD to PNG in Photoshop

  1. Open the PSD in Photoshop and check that the visible composition looks as expected.
  2. Choose File > Save As.
  3. In the format menu, select PNG, choose a destination and filename, then save. Adobe’s tutorial notes that the available format depends on document compatibility.
  4. Confirm the PNG options if prompted, then open the saved file to verify the result.

Adobe documents PNG transparency support, so transparent regions can remain transparent in the exported image. Check the PNG against a contrasting background if transparency matters; a viewer may display transparent pixels over a white or checkerboard preview.

PNG and PSD do not preserve the same editing information. Adobe says saving as PNG flattens layers and other edits into a single layer. Save a separate PNG rather than overwriting the PSD.

Convert without Photoshop using Krita

Krita’s manual documents both PSD loading and PNG support. Open the PSD, inspect the imported composite, then use Krita’s save or export workflow to create a PNG. Menu labels can vary by version and operating system, so follow the format choices shown by your installed version.

Krita supports a range of PSD content, including raster layers, blending modes, layer styles, vector shapes, text layers, layer groups and transparency masks. Its manual also cautions that PSD compatibility outside Photoshop cannot be complete. Complex documents may render differently, so compare the imported image with the original before exporting.

Use ImageMagick for a command-line workflow

ImageMagick’s official format listing marks PSD as readable and writable and supports PNG. That establishes format capability, not a universal command or guaranteed rendering for every PSD. Since results can depend on the document and installed version, check ImageMagick’s documentation for your version and test with a copy of the file rather than relying on an unverified command.

  • Open the resulting PNG and check that the composite looks right.
  • Verify transparency if the design uses a transparent background.
  • For a complex PSD, compare important text, effects and blending against the source.

Automate conversion with Adobe’s Photoshop API

Adobe’s Photoshop API migration guide describes PSD-to-PNG conversion with transparency support. Its documented options include PNG compression settings and trimming transparent pixels around the canvas. Trimming changes the output bounds, so use it only when you want to remove transparent margins. The API is intended for automated or developer use rather than a simple one-time desktop conversion.

Check quality, transparency and bit depth

Always inspect the exported PNG, especially when the PSD uses complex effects or high bit depth. Adobe’s format overview lists PNG support for 16-bit images through Save a Copy, while PSD supports 16-bit and 32-bit images. That does not establish identical behavior across every application or workflow; consult the relevant app documentation and verify the output for high-bit-depth work.

Adobe lists a 2 GB file limit for PSD and recommends PSB for larger files. This is a PSD format limit, not a guarantee about whether a particular conversion will succeed.
