You can claim a digital entitlement from some Xbox game discs by inserting the disc into a disc-drive Xbox One or Xbox Series X and launching the game. It is not a universal disc-to-digital conversion: eligibility depends on the title, and Microsoft conditions continued access on keeping the qualifying disc.
How to claim the digital entitlement
- Use a disc-drive Xbox One or Xbox Series X. Xbox identifies these console families for claiming an entitlement from a supported game disc. The game must be eligible; having compatible hardware does not make every disc qualify.
- Insert the game disc and launch the game. Xbox describes this as the claim action. The official announcement does not specify a universal menu path, button sequence, or prompt, so follow the instructions shown on your console.
- Check the result for your specific disc. Microsoft says not all Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs qualify. Availability can also change for technical, licensing, publishing, or other reasons. There is no complete eligibility list established here; use the console’s current result rather than assuming a title is covered.
- Keep the qualifying disc. Microsoft’s rules condition the digital license on continued possession of that disc and may require revalidation. If you no longer possess it, access may be suspended or revoked.
What the disc-based entitlement does—and does not—mean
This is not a way to claim a digital copy, sell or give away the disc, and keep playing indefinitely. The qualifying disc remains part of the license condition even after you claim the entitlement. If you want access without retaining the disc, you will need to buy a digital version separately.

Which Xbox consoles can read the disc?
The claim process requires a disc reader. Xbox Series S is digital-only and cannot accept or read a physical game disc. If you own a Series S, you would need access to a supported disc-drive Xbox One or Xbox Series X to attempt the claim; the entitlement remains subject to the game’s eligibility and disc-possession condition.

Disc entitlement or separate digital purchase?
| Route | Eligibility | Hardware | Keep the disc? | Separate digital purchase? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Claim an entitlement from a physical disc | Only supported titles; check the console’s current result | Disc-drive Xbox One or Xbox Series X | Yes; continued possession is a condition of the license | No purchase is described for claiming the entitlement |
| Buy the digital version separately | Depends on whether a digital version is available for purchase | A compatible Xbox for the digital game; no disc reader is needed to use a digital copy | No | Yes |
If the entitlement is unavailable or access is lost
If the disc does not qualify, or you no longer possess it and lose access under Microsoft’s rules, the stated fallback is to purchase a new digital version. That is a separate purchase, not a transfer of the disc entitlement.

What Xbox has confirmed
In its August 26, 2026 announcement, Xbox said: “Players can claim a digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc into an XBOX One or XBOX Series X console and launching the game.” Microsoft’s rules separately explain that eligibility is limited and continued disc possession can be required. Those sources do not establish a universal prompt or a title-by-title list, so the console’s eligibility result is the practical check for your disc.
