To keep a long webpage from being cut off in PDFShift, control page breaks with CSS, wait for dynamic content to finish rendering, and reduce unnecessary loading work. Then inspect the PDF and adjust the rules for the page you are converting: PDFShift documents these controls, but does not promise that they prevent every clipping problem.
1. Find where the page breaks badly
Open the webpage in a browser and use developer tools to identify the element that is split, pushed to an awkward page, or missing from the PDF. PDFShift also recommends checking the effect of CSS changes in the browser’s print preview. A page break is a layout problem; content that has not finished loading needs a separate readiness fix.

2. Control pagination with CSS
Use the CSS properties break-before, break-after, and break-inside to influence where content starts, ends, or stays together across pages. For example, you can ask a heading to start on a new page or discourage a card from splitting across pages:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →h2.chapter-title {
break-before: page;
}
.article-card {
break-inside: avoid;
}
Choose selectors that match the actual source page. If you own the page, add the rules to its stylesheet or markup. If you do not, PDFShift documents sending CSS in the conversion request to target elements in the source document. Its help example applies break-before: page to a heading; adapt the selector rather than assuming one selector works on every site.

- Scanner type: Document
- Connectivity technology: USB
- With Auto Scan Mode, the scanner automatically detects what you're scanning
- Digitize documents and images
These rules guide page flow, but the result still depends on the target page’s layout. A rule that is too broad can create large blank areas or move more content than intended, so apply it to the specific element causing the bad break and review the resulting PDF.
3. Wait for asynchronous content
A page can be present in the browser before its charts, fonts, or other JavaScript-rendered content is ready. PDFShift’s wait_for parameter lets you name a function available globally on the page; the conversion waits while that function returns a falsey value and proceeds when it returns a truthy value, subject to the overall conversion timeout.
For example, if the page exposes a chart element whose rendered height indicates that it has appeared, a readiness function can test for it:

function chartsReady() {
const chart = document.querySelector(".chart");
return chart && chart.getBoundingClientRect().height > 0;
}
Pass the name of a suitable global readiness function as wait_for in the PDFShift request. For fonts, PDFShift’s guide demonstrates waiting on document.fonts.ready. If the source page has no suitable readiness function, PDFShift says JavaScript can be injected in the request. See its guide to waiting for an element before conversion and its Node example for a custom readiness function for request-specific details.
4. Stay within PDFShift’s conversion timeout
PDFShift’s help guide and FAQ state default overall conversion timeouts of 30 seconds for free accounts/plans and 100 seconds for premium/paid accounts/plans. The limit covers loading and processing the document as well as converting it to PDF. The FAQ says a timeout returns HTTP 408 with a JSON response. PDFShift says premium customers can contact the company about extending the timeout. Plan terms can change, so check the current service documentation if your request approaches these limits.
A readiness condition cannot make a conversion wait indefinitely: it must become true while time remains. If it does not, check that the named function is available on the page and that its test can become true after the relevant content renders.

5. Reduce avoidable resource loading
Slow or numerous network requests can consume time needed to load and process a long page. PDFShift recommends reducing that work where practical:
- Send raw HTML instead of a source URL when that fits your workflow.
- Inline CSS and JavaScript where possible.
- Remove unnecessary scripts, such as trackers.
- Embed image data, such as base64, where appropriate.
- Resize or optimize images for the PDF page size.
These are performance measures, not a guarantee against clipping. They are most useful when loading time or remote assets are the bottleneck; pagination still needs to be handled with layout rules.
6. Inspect and adjust the generated PDF
Check the actual output at page boundaries, especially around the element that prompted the change. If an element is split poorly, refine the selector or change the applicable break rule. If content is absent because it rendered late, add or correct the readiness check and verify that it becomes true before the request times out. Repeat against the target page rather than assuming one CSS rule will work across different sites.

Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| A heading or block starts or ends on an awkward page | The page’s print layout has no suitable break rule. | Identify the element in developer tools, apply a targeted break-before, break-after, or break-inside rule, then inspect the PDF. |
| A chart, font, or other dynamic content is missing | Conversion started before asynchronous rendering finished. | Use wait_for with a global function that becomes truthy when the content is ready; test that condition on the page. |
| The request returns HTTP 408 | The conversion exceeded the account’s overall timeout. | Reduce avoidable loading work, check that the readiness function can complete, and verify the current account timeout in PDFShift’s FAQ. |
| The PDF is slow even when layout rules are correct | Remote resources or unnecessary scripts are extending load and processing time. | Apply PDFShift’s resource-loading recommendations, such as using raw HTML when practical and optimizing images. |
| A CSS change has no effect | The selector does not match the target page’s elements, or the rule is being applied in the wrong place. | Confirm the selector in developer tools and print preview; for an uneditable source, pass the CSS through the PDFShift request as documented in its page-break guide. |
Or skip the browser setup
If you need an image or PDF capture of a webpage rather than PDFShift’s pagination controls, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API and an MCP server for AI agents. For example, this cURL request saves a screenshot of the target URL as WebP:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Replace YOUR_API_KEY and the target URL as needed. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does PDFShift guarantee that a long webpage will never be clipped?
No. Its documentation describes pagination, readiness, and performance controls, but does not establish a universal clipping guarantee or a published clipping success rate.
Can I use PDFShift page-break CSS if I do not control the webpage?
Yes. PDFShift documents passing CSS in the conversion request so you can target elements in the source page.
