If your file is a Firefox screenshot, download or save the PNG, open it in an image editor, and export it as JPEG/JPG. If you actually have a WebP image saved from a web page, open that WebP in an editor or use a browser conversion extension that can export JPEG. Renaming .webp or .png to .jpg only changes the filename; it does not convert the encoded image.

First identify what you have
The correct conversion route depends on the starting file. Check the filename and, if necessary, the file information shown by your operating system or image editor.

Mozilla’s support forum explains why ordinary saving does not convert image formats: the browser saves the data it receives, while changing an extension does not rewrite that data. See the discussion at “Stop saving all image files as WebP?”.

Convert a Firefox screenshot (PNG) to JPG
1. Capture and download the screenshot
- Open the page in Firefox.
- Right-click the page and choose Take Screenshot. Firefox also provides a keyboard shortcut; the exact shortcut can vary by operating system and Firefox documentation.
- Select a region, or choose the visible-page or full-page capture option in the screenshot controls.
- Choose Download. Firefox saves the screenshot as a PNG in the browser’s normal download folder. You can also copy it to the clipboard and paste it into an editor.

2. Open the PNG in an image editor
Use any editor that can open PNG and write JPEG. The menu label differs by application, so look for Export, Export As, Save As, or an equivalent command. Do not overwrite the original PNG until you have checked the JPEG.
3. Choose JPEG/JPG as the output format
- Open the editor’s export or save dialog.
- Select JPEG or JPG as the format. These refer to the same image format; the common extensions are
.jpgand.jpeg. - Choose a quality setting if the editor offers one. The available scale and its effect differ by application; there is no universal quality number established for every editor.
- Give the output a new name, such as
firefox-screenshot.jpg. - Save or export, then open the resulting file to confirm that your destination application recognizes it as JPEG.
Keep the PNG if you may need to edit, crop, annotate, or re-export later. JPEG encoding is lossy, so repeatedly opening and saving the JPEG can introduce additional quality loss.
Convert a WebP image saved in Firefox
A WebP file displayed in Firefox is different from a screenshot made with Take Screenshot. If you used the page’s image context menu or downloaded an image supplied by a website, the source may be WebP.

Editor export
- Open the
.webpfile in an image editor that supports WebP. - Choose Export, Export As, or Save As.
- Select JPEG/JPG, set the editor’s quality option if needed, and save a new file.
- Check the new file’s extension and open it in the application that needs the JPG.
Firefox conversion extension
Mozilla Add-ons lists Save webP as PNG or JPEG (Converter). Its listing describes a right-click workflow for images shown in the browser and lets you choose JPEG quality. Open the current listing, review its permissions and supported features, install it only if you trust those permissions, then right-click an image and select the converter’s JPEG option. Add-on interfaces, permissions, and availability can change, so follow the labels shown in your installed version.
Why renaming the extension fails
PNG, WebP, and JPEG use different binary encodings. A filename extension helps an application choose a decoder, but it does not alter the bytes inside the file. Renaming picture.webp to picture.jpg can therefore produce an error, a blank image, or a file that another application identifies as WebP.
A real conversion decodes the source image and encodes a new JPEG file. An editor’s export command or a conversion extension performs that operation. If you already renamed a file, restore the original extension when possible and export it properly.
Understand the quality and transparency trade-off
JPEG is lossy
MDN describes JPEG (image/jpeg) as a lossy image format. Exporting a PNG or WebP as JPEG can discard image information, particularly around sharp text, fine lines, and repeated editing. JPEG is usually a practical choice for photographic screenshots or systems that require JPG compatibility, but it is not a lossless preservation step. See MDN’s image file type and format guide.

WebP may be lossy or lossless
WebP supports both lossy and lossless modes, as described by MDN and RFC 9649. Converting a lossless WebP to JPEG will still create a lossy result. If exact pixels matter, retain the original WebP or PNG and use JPEG only for the copy that needs compatibility.
Transparency becomes a problem
JPEG does not preserve an alpha transparency channel. Transparent areas normally need to be composited against a background color during export. If your screenshot or image contains transparent UI elements, a transparent PNG or suitable WebP may represent it more accurately than JPG.

The downloaded Firefox screenshot is PNG, not WebP
That is expected for the built-in screenshot tool. Open the PNG and export JPEG; do not try to force Firefox’s screenshot download to use a JPG extension.
The “JPG” file will not open
The file was probably renamed rather than converted, or the download is incomplete. Restore the original extension, open the source, and use an export command. If the source itself is damaged, download or capture it again.

JPEG cannot store transparency. Choose the intended background color before exporting, or retain a transparent PNG/WebP for workflows that support alpha.

Text looks blurry or has halos
JPEG compression is most visible around high-contrast text and thin lines. Increase the editor’s quality setting if available, export from the original PNG/WebP rather than from an already compressed JPG, and avoid repeated JPEG saves.
The extension does not appear in the context menu
Confirm that the add-on is installed and enabled, right-click the actual image rather than page whitespace, and check the add-on’s current instructions and permissions on its Mozilla Add-ons listing. Some pages display an image through a canvas or other element instead of a directly addressable image, which can change what a context menu offers.
The destination still rejects the file
Verify that the file is genuinely JPEG in an image viewer or editor, not merely named .jpg. Check whether the destination imposes a pixel-dimension or file-size limit, then export a smaller JPEG from the original. If transparency is required, confirm that the destination really accepts JPEG; a JPG cannot preserve transparent pixels.

- The source is identified as PNG, WebP, or another format.
- The image was exported or encoded as JPEG, rather than renamed.
- The output opens in an independent image viewer.
- The filename ends in
.jpgor.jpeg. - Transparency and quality requirements were checked before deleting the original.
