To share a Story with a chosen group or exclude particular people from Stories, use Instagram’s Story audience controls. These settings cover different audiences: Story controls do not, by themselves, restrict who can see your ordinary posts.
Limit who can see your posts, Stories and Reels
Instagram’s broad account-level option is to make your account private. Meta says that people have to follow a private account to see its posts, Stories and Reels. That means this setting addresses more than feed posts alone: it applies to the account’s listed content as a whole. See Meta’s explanation of private accounts.

Use this option when your goal is to limit visibility across your account rather than adjust the audience for one Story. The audience is based on followers, not a separate list selected for each post. Meta’s article dates from July 2021, so it establishes the stated scope of private accounts but does not confirm today’s exact settings screens or labels.

Choose a different audience for Stories
Instagram’s Story-specific controls can help when you want a narrower audience for Stories without treating that as a change to ordinary post visibility. A City of Billings guide describes two choices: share a Story with Close Friends, or hide Stories from selected people. The guide does not establish the current menu path or app-version-specific labels, so check the live Instagram app’s privacy or audience settings for the available controls. - Close Friends: choose a selected group to receive a Story.
- Hide Story from selected people: exclude particular people from your Stories.
These choices concern Stories. Do not assume that hiding a Story from someone also hides feed posts from that person; the cited guide describes a Story-specific control, while Meta describes private-account visibility across posts, Stories and Reels.
Which setting fits your goal?
| What you want to do | Control | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Limit who can see ordinary posts, as well as Stories and Reels | Private account | People have to follow the account to see this content, according to Meta’s 2021 article. |
| Share a Story with a chosen group | Close Friends | Stories; described in the City of Billings guide. Exact current steps are not established. |
| Exclude selected people from Stories | Hide Story from selected people | Stories; described in the City of Billings guide. Exact current steps are not established. |
If you need the same audience restriction for posts and Stories, use the account-level private setting rather than relying only on Story controls. If you only want to tailor a Story’s audience, use the relevant Story option.

Check the app before changing a setting
The available sources do not verify the current tap-by-tap route or exact labels in Instagram’s app. Open Instagram and look in its current privacy or audience settings; app versions and interface labels can change. Confirm which audience option you are changing before saving, especially whether it applies to the account generally or only to Stories.
The sources establish audience controls, not protections against copying, screenshots, resharing or someone viewing content through another person. Do not treat these settings as guarantees against those forms of access.

What Meta’s older privacy statistic does—and does not—show
In its July 2021 article, Meta reported that eight out of ten young people accepted private default settings during sign-up testing. This is a historical statistic reported by Meta, not a current estimate or an independently verified result. Meta also quoted Instagram’s then-existing recommendation that teens set social profiles to private for more control over who sees what they post; that statement is historical guidance, not a claim about current defaults.
