Instagram lets you decide whether messages from different groups of people go straight to Chats, arrive as Message Requests, or are not delivered. To reduce unwanted contact, open your profile settings, find the current messaging or message-controls area, and choose the least permissive option for each sender category. Then review the separate group-chat invitation setting, because blocking message requests does not necessarily stop people from adding you to group chats.
Instagram changes menu names and available choices by app version, country, age and account status. The labels below describe the controls to look for rather than promising one exact tap sequence on every phone. These are built-in account settings, so you do not need to buy an accessory, subscription or third-party service to use them.

What Instagram message controls actually change
Message controls decide where a person’s first message goes, or whether Instagram delivers it at all. Depending on the sender category shown in your account, you may be able to choose one of three outcomes:

|---|---|---|
| Chats | The message appears in your normal inbox and can start a conversation there. | You want ordinary contact from that category without an approval step. |
| Message Requests | The message is separated from your main chats until you accept, delete or otherwise handle the request. | You want a chance to review messages without letting unknown people into your regular inbox. |
| Don’t receive (or equivalent) | Instagram does not deliver new messages from that category to you. | You want to stop new requests from that category as far as the option is available. |
Meta described the feature this way in its September 2020 messaging announcement: “You can also control where you receive messages and calls, such as in your chats, in your message requests or not at all.” The exact sender categories and wording have changed over time, so use the choices currently displayed in your own account.

These controls are not a universal off switch. A setting for people you do not follow may not affect an existing follower, a person you already accepted, or a conversation that is already open. Instagram may present separate rows for several groups, so check each relevant row instead of changing only the first one you see.
Think of the setting as a routing rule, not a conversation-management tool. Selecting no delivery for a category generally affects new incoming messages; it does not necessarily delete old requests, close an existing thread, remove someone from a group, or undo a connection you already approved. Those cases need their own action.
How do I stop people from messaging me on Instagram?
Use the broad message-request controls first. The following route reflects the current structure of Instagram settings, while allowing for renamed menus.
- Open your profile. In the Instagram app, tap your profile picture, then open the menu button (usually three lines).
- Enter settings. Look for Settings and activity, Settings, or a similarly named account-settings screen.
- Find messaging controls. Search the page for Messages and story replies, Message controls, Message requests, or another messaging/privacy heading. If your version has a settings search box, search for “messages” or “requests.”
- Open each sender category. Instagram can separate people you do not follow, your followers, other connected accounts, and other categories. The categories shown depend on your account.
- Choose the delivery level. For a category you want to restrict, select Message Requests or the least-permissive Don’t receive option available. Choosing Chats leaves direct delivery enabled.
- Repeat for other categories. Changing the “people you don’t follow” row does not automatically change followers or existing connections. Review every row that could apply to the people you are trying to keep out.
- Leave settings and verify. The change normally saves as soon as you select it. Return to the same screen to confirm the selected option if the interface gives no separate Save button.
If a category offers only Chats and Message Requests, Instagram has not made a no-delivery choice available for that category on your account. Use the strongest option displayed, then use Restrict or Block for a specific account when appropriate.
Check the result without exposing yourself
After changing a setting, reread the category name and selected outcome so you know exactly whom it covers. If you have a trusted person in that category, you can ask them whether a test message appears as a request rather than a chat. Do not ask a stranger to test the setting, and do not accept a request merely to confirm a control if you do not want a conversation.
How do I turn off message requests?
There is no single global switch that necessarily removes every request from every person. Instead, Instagram places delivery choices inside sender-category settings. To reduce requests:
- Open the messaging or message-request section described above.
- Identify the row covering the people who are sending unwanted requests, such as people you do not follow.
- Select Don’t receive, Don’t get requests, or the closest no-delivery label your app provides.
- Inspect the remaining rows. If followers, other connected accounts, or another category has its own control, change that row separately.
A no-delivery choice applies to new messages in the category. It may not erase requests already sitting in your inbox, close an existing conversation, prevent a person you later follow from contacting you, or stop invitations to a group chat. Deal with those situations separately.
If your goal is simply to keep unknown messages out of the main inbox, Message Requests may be a better compromise than no delivery. You retain the ability to recognize a legitimate contact, while the sender does not enter your normal chat list until you accept. If you never want to review such messages, choose no delivery where Instagram offers it and then clear old requests separately.
Can I stop non-followers from DMing me?
Yes, when your account shows a control for people you do not follow. Set that category to Message Requests if you still want to screen messages, or to Don’t receive if Instagram offers it and you want the most restrictive setting.
Check the scope before assuming the change covers everyone outside your follower list. Instagram can distinguish between:
- People you do not follow;
- Your followers;
- People you have already exchanged messages with;
- Other accounts or connections that Instagram lists separately.
If the unwanted sender already follows you, is in an established conversation, or falls into a different row, the non-follower setting may not affect them. Change the applicable row or use an account-specific action.

How do I stop people adding me to Instagram group chats?
Group-chat invitations are a separate control from one-to-one message delivery. Someone can be unable to send a normal DM and still be able to invite you to a group if the group setting remains permissive.
- Return to your profile menu and open the current settings screen.
- Search for Messages, Message controls, Group chats, or Who can add you to group chats.
- Review the sender choices Instagram provides, such as everyone, followers, or people you follow/are connected to.
- Choose the narrowest group-invitation option that fits your needs.
Do not assume that changing the direct-message row changed this group setting. Recheck both areas after an app update, because Instagram may move them or rename the headings.
If you are already in an unwanted group, changing who may add you will not necessarily remove you from that existing chat. Leave or report the group using the controls shown in the conversation, and block or report an account when its conduct violates Instagram’s rules.

Choosing between Requests and no delivery
The right choice depends on whether you need a review queue or a hard reduction in incoming contact. Use this comparison when deciding what to select for each category.
| Question | Message Requests | Don’t receive |
|---|---|---|
| Will the message reach Instagram? | Yes, in a separate requests area. | No new message should be delivered from that category. |
| Can you review a legitimate message? | Yes; you can accept or handle it later. | Not through that message channel. |
| Does it affect every sender? | No; it applies only to the selected category. | No; it also applies only to the selected category. |
| Does it stop group invitations? | No. Group controls are separate. | No. Group controls are separate. |
| Best fit | You want filtering and the possibility of contact. | You do not want new contact from that category. |
Before choosing, ask which trade-off matters more: preserving a way for a client, relative or school contact to reach you, or minimizing every new request from that category. You can use different choices for different rows. For example, you might keep followers in Chats, send non-followers to Requests, and choose no delivery for another category if that option appears.
When to use Restrict, Block, Report or Hidden Words
General delivery settings are useful for categories of people. If one account is causing the problem, Instagram provides additional tools with different effects.
Rank #3
Restrict
Restrict is a lower-visibility way to limit an account. Meta’s safety guidance says it can limit certain interactions and hide your online status and read status from the restricted person. It is useful when you want distance without the more obvious effect of blocking. Restrict is not a promise that every contact attempt disappears; check the account’s messages and interactions after applying it.

Block is the stronger account-level response. Use the profile or conversation menu for the account, select Block, and confirm the action. Blocking targets that account rather than changing the category rules for everyone else. If the person uses another account, you may need to address that account separately.
Report
Report sends content or account information to Instagram for review under its rules. Reporting is appropriate for threats, harassment, impersonation, scams or other violations. It is not a substitute for selecting a restrictive delivery setting, and submitting a report does not guarantee a particular enforcement outcome. Save any details you may need for the report before deleting a message or leaving a conversation.
Hidden Words
Hidden Words can route requests containing selected abusive words, phrases or emojis to Hidden Requests. Add terms carefully: a broad word can catch benign messages, while a narrow list may miss variations, misspellings or coded language. Hidden Words filters content; it does not replace the group-chat setting or a block when one account is persistently contacting you.
These tools can be combined. A category rule can reduce unknown requests, Hidden Words can divert recurring language, and Block or Report can address a particular account. None should be described as a guarantee that all unwanted contact will stop.
Teen accounts have stricter defaults
Teen safety settings can make the available choices different from those on an adult account. In announcements made in January 2024 and updated during 2024, Meta said teens under 16—or under 18 in certain countries—can by default be messaged or added to group chats only by people they already follow or are connected to. The applicable age threshold depends on the country and the account’s eligibility.
For supervised teens under 16, Meta says a parent or guardian may need to approve some requests to change the default safety and privacy settings to a less strict option. The approval requirement and the controls shown can vary with country, age and whether supervision is active. Larry Magid of ConnectSafely described the approach as giving parents tools to approve or deny changes while respecting teens’ privacy and ability to communicate with friends and family.
Meta also says that, for a teen who is not already connected to the sender, a message request is text-only until the teen accepts it. Images, videos and voice notes cannot be sent in that request before acceptance. This safeguard is specific to the teen experience and should not be assumed to apply to every Instagram account.
If a teen cannot find the same choices described for an adult account, do not treat that as an error. Check the account’s age, country and supervision status, and follow any parent-approval prompt rather than trying to bypass it.

What to do when the menu does not match
Instagram frequently experiments with navigation and labels. Work from the function you need, not from a remembered screenshot.
- Search settings: use terms such as “message,” “request,” “group,” or “privacy.”
- Check nearby headings: a control may be under Messages and story replies, Privacy, How others can interact with you, or a similarly named section.
- Look for per-category rows: the no-delivery choice may exist for one sender group but not another.
- Confirm the account context: age, country, supervision and account state can change what Instagram displays.
- Update the app through your phone’s normal app store if settings appear incomplete, then search again. An update can also move a setting, so recheck the selected values afterward.
- Use account-specific controls when a general setting is unavailable: Restrict, Block, Report or Hidden Words each addresses a different problem.
Do not infer that a missing toggle means Instagram guarantees no contact. It may mean the category has a different policy, the account is using a different interface, or the feature is not eligible in that region.

Use this sequence to avoid changing the wrong setting:
- Define the target: everyone outside your circle, followers, one account, abusive language, or group invitations.
- Choose the scope: use message controls for a sender category; use Restrict or Block for one account; use Hidden Words for recurring terms; use Report for suspected violations.
- Set delivery: choose Chats, Message Requests or no delivery for every relevant category shown.
- Set group access separately: restrict who can add you to group chats.
- Check existing contact: handle old requests and conversations, because a new category rule may not remove them.
- Review after changes: open the settings page again and confirm the labels and selections currently displayed.
Instagram’s controls reduce unwanted access, but no setting should be presented as a guarantee that every unwanted interaction will stop. Combining category-level delivery choices with the account-specific tool that matches the problem gives you the most control while preserving legitimate conversations you still want.
Common questions
Why can someone still message me after I turned off non-follower requests? They may be a follower, an existing connection or part of a different sender category. Review every row Instagram displays, and use Block or Restrict for that account if appropriate.
Will turning off message requests stop group-chat invites? No. Group invitations have their own setting. Open the group-chat control and choose the narrowest permitted audience separately.
Can I remove requests that are already there? A new delivery rule concerns new messages; it may not erase old requests or close open conversations. Handle existing requests in the inbox and use account-specific tools for persistent senders.
Is Message Requests the same as blocking? No. Requests keep a message available for review, while Block targets a particular account and is a stronger account-level response. Neither one changes every other sender category automatically.
Recommended Free Tools
Why does my teen account show fewer choices? Teen defaults can limit who may message or add the account to groups. Country, age and supervision affect the threshold, and a supervised teen may need parent approval to select a less restrictive option.

Do these settings require payment or another app? No paid product is needed. The controls are part of Instagram, although the labels and available choices can vary by account and app version.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I stop people from messaging me on Instagram?
Open your profile menu, find the current Messages, Message controls or Message requests area, and set each relevant sender category to Message Requests or the available Don’t receive option. Repeat for every category that applies; one row may not cover followers or existing connections.
How do I turn off message requests?
There may not be one global switch. Open the sender-category controls and choose Don’t receive, Don’t get requests or the closest no-delivery label for each category you want to restrict. Existing requests and group invitations require separate actions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCan I stop non-followers from DMing me?
Yes, if your account shows a people-you-don’t-follow category. Choose Message Requests to screen those messages or Don’t receive for the strongest available restriction. Check other rows because followers and established conversations may be governed separately.
How do I stop people adding me to Instagram group chats?
Find the separate Group chats or Who can add you to group chats setting in your profile settings. Choose the narrowest audience offered. Direct-message controls do not automatically change group invitations.
Should I use Restrict or Block?
Restrict is a lower-visibility way to limit certain interactions and hide your online and read status from the account. Block is a stronger account-level response. Choose based on whether you want distance from one account or a more decisive barrier.
Why are my teen account’s message options different?
Meta’s teen defaults can allow messaging and group additions only from people the teen already follows or is connected to. Under-16 supervised teens may need parent approval for some less-strict changes, and thresholds vary by country.
The Bottom Line
Set message delivery for every sender category Instagram shows, then configure group-chat invitations separately. Use Message Requests when you still want a review queue, Don’t receive when available for a category you want to shut out, and Restrict, Block, Report or Hidden Words for account-specific problems. Teen age, country and supervision can change the choices.
