To limit how your Google Search activity is saved and used to train Google’s generative AI, turn off Search Services History in your Google Account, then review and delete any activity already saved. The control is rolling out gradually, and it does not switch off AI features such as AI Overviews or erase past history.
What Search Services History controls
Google’s Search Services History setting covers activity across Search, Maps, Shopping, Flights, Hotels, Translate and News. When it is on, examples of activity that may be saved to your Google Account include queries and results viewed, AI Mode responses, Search Live transcripts, Lens uploads, sites visited through Search services, places viewed in Maps and ads clicked.

Google says this history helps you revisit activity and receive personalized recommendations, and that saved history may be used to provide, develop and improve its services, including training generative AI models. Google Search Help states: “When Search Services History is off, your future activity won’t be used to train Google’s generative AI models, unless you provide feedback.”

- Sign in to the Google Account whose Search activity you want to control.
- Open Google Account activity controls and look for Search Services History or the Search history and data controls available in your account. Google is gradually updating these settings, so the exact route and label may vary.
- Turn off Search Services History and confirm the choice if prompted.
With the setting off, new activity is not saved to Search Services History, and future activity is not used to train Google’s generative AI models unless you provide feedback. Search may still use recent activity temporarily to respond to you. Google also says it continues to collect data not associated with your account for service operation, safety and business purposes.

Delete activity that was already saved
Turning off Search Services History is prospective: it does not remove activity already in the account. Review and delete saved history separately, and check the account’s auto-delete option. Past activity that has not been deleted remains subject to that option and may still be used according to Google’s policies.
Remove AI Mode activity
Delete saved AI Mode searches from AI Mode history or Google Search History. Google warns that a search which continued into AI Mode can produce two history entries. If you want to remove the associated search as well as the AI Mode item, check Search History and delete the related entry too. See Google’s AI Mode history instructions.

Understand what this setting does not control
Search Services History is one account control, not a master switch for every kind of Google data. It does not change settings or data categories such as Web & App Activity, YouTube History, Gemini Apps Activity, public reviews and uploads, or saved items. If the new Search Services History control is not available in your account, Google says Web & App Activity continues to control history and personalized recommendations while the rollout proceeds. Review the controls that appear in your account rather than assuming one switch covers everything.

AI Overviews are a core Search feature. The AI in Search Labs control can opt you out of Labs experiments, but it is not a universal setting for removing AI Overviews from Search. AI Mode has its own saved-history controls; its optional Labs experiment is separate from the general AI Mode experience.

Connecting Gmail, Calendar or Photos to Search services is optional. Google says connected app data may be used to improve its services, including generative AI. You can review connected apps in Search settings for connected apps and disconnect them if you do not want them connected. Disconnecting an app does not delete activity already saved to Search Services History, so manage or delete that history separately.

If you cannot find the control
- Check the rollout: Google says Search services settings are being updated gradually. Search Services History may not yet appear in your account; check Web & App Activity in the meantime.
- Consider account management: For a work or school Google Workspace account, availability may depend on administrator settings. Search Labs experiments are unavailable to Workspace accounts according to Google’s Labs information.
- Expect account-specific differences: Google notes that availability can vary by account, platform, country, language, age and administrator settings. Use the controls currently shown in your account.
