To limit Meta’s use of shopping-related signals, manage two separate sources: what you ask Meta AI and activity businesses send to Meta. Use Ads Preferences and feed controls for recommendations based on AI interactions, and look for Activity from other businesses to manage purchases and other activity shared by businesses. Neither control is a universal deletion switch, and availability can vary by country and account.
Does Meta AI use shopping questions to influence ads?
Meta announced that, beginning December 16, 2025, it would use interactions with its generative AI features to personalize content and ad recommendations. For example, asking Meta AI about hiking may contribute to hiking-related recommendations or ads. Meta says these signals can be used across its products for accounts linked in the same Accounts Center. Its announcement gives an unlinked WhatsApp account as an example of interactions that would not personalize experiences across other Meta product accounts; that example should not be taken as a rule for every account setup.

Meta says more than 1 billion people use Meta AI monthly; that is Meta’s own usage figure, not an independent measurement of shopping-data collection. The company’s description of AI interaction personalization is in its October 1, 2025 announcement.

How do I limit recommendations based on Meta AI interactions?
Meta points users to Ads Preferences and feed controls to adjust the ads and content they see. These controls change recommendations; Meta does not describe them as erasing an AI conversation or blocking every possible use of interaction data.

- Check the controls for the account or connected accounts you use. Meta says AI interaction signals may be used across accounts added to the same Accounts Center.
Meta’s announcement says these controls can be adjusted at any time. Exact labels and locations may vary, so use the current controls shown in your app or account rather than relying on a fixed menu path.
How do I turn off use of purchases shared by other businesses?
A separate signal can come from businesses sharing information about activity on their websites, including purchases. Meta’s June 9, 2026 announcement says Activity from other businesses manages how this data is used to personalize ads and other content, including Feed content and AI responses. The company says the older Your activity off Meta technologies control is being phased out as these controls are streamlined.

- Open your current Meta privacy or account settings.
- Find Activity from other businesses and review the available choices.
- Adjust the setting to limit how external activity is used for personalization, then confirm the saved choice if the interface asks.
Meta says the change applies in the United States and some other countries, with additional countries to follow. If the control is not visible, rollout or account availability may differ; check your account again rather than assuming the older setting still governs the same uses. Deleting chat information and changing personalization settings are different actions. Meta’s generative-AI explainer identifies the command /reset-ai for deleting information shared in a chat on Messenger, Instagram, or WhatsApp. Meta does not say that using this command opts you out of other uses of interaction data, or changes how businesses’ external activity is used.

Use the command in the relevant chat if your goal is to delete information shared there; manage Ads Preferences or Activity from other businesses separately for their respective personalization controls. Details are in Meta’s generative-AI privacy explainer, updated June 8, 2026.
Does turning off personalization stop AI training?
Not necessarily. Meta describes a separate regional issue for people in the European Union: it says interactions with Meta AI, including questions and queries, are used to train and improve its models, and describes an objection form linked from notifications. That training matter is not the same as ad preferences or the external-activity setting.

Meta also says it does not use private messages with friends and family to train its AIs unless someone in the chat chooses to share those messages with its AIs. Read the company’s EU AI information, published April 14, 2025 and updated March 27, 2026, for its regional explanation and objection process.

Meta’s privacy tools overview also lists Privacy Checkup, information-management and deletion tools, Off-Facebook Activity, and Ads Interests & Preferences. For business-shared activity, its June 2026 announcement is the more specific account of the changed control. These are Meta’s descriptions of its policies and tools; they are not independent verification of every implementation detail.
