On an iPhone: open Settings > Face ID & Passcode (or Touch ID & Passcode), then turn off Widgets under Allow Access When Locked. This prevents anyone holding the locked phone from opening Lock Screen widgets, but it also removes your own quick access until you authenticate.
On Android: the controls depend on the phone maker and software version. On Pixel phones, review Settings > Notifications > Notifications on lock screen and disable Show sensitive content when you want notifications to remain visible without their private details. Check the separate At a Glance settings if that surface is showing calendar events or other information.

What the lock-screen control actually changes
“Lock screen widgets” and notification previews are related privacy concerns, but they are not the same setting. A widget is an interactive information surface that can be available before the phone is unlocked. A notification preview is text from an alert, such as a message, email, or calendar reminder.

Android is less uniform. Google documents notification-privacy controls for Pixel phones, while other manufacturers can use different labels, menu locations, or capabilities. Use the instructions for your exact model and Android version rather than assuming that a Pixel path exists unchanged on every phone.
iPhone: block Lock Screen widget access
Turn off all Lock Screen widget access
- Open Settings.
- Tap Face ID & Passcode on an iPhone that uses Face ID. On a model with a Home button and Touch ID, tap Touch ID & Passcode.
- Enter your passcode when prompted.
- Scroll to Allow Access When Locked.
- Turn off Widgets.
With this switch off, a person who has the locked iPhone cannot use its Lock Screen widgets to view the personal information those widgets provide. Apple gives an upcoming Calendar event as an example of information that could otherwise be exposed.
The setting is deliberately all-or-nothing at the system level: it protects the information by removing Lock Screen widget access, but it also removes the convenience for you. You will need to unlock the iPhone before using those widgets. If you turn the switch back on, the widgets become available from the locked Lock Screen again.
When this is the right setting
Use the Widgets switch when your concern is the widget surface itself: for example, a calendar, reminders, weather, or another widget that can reveal personal context without showing a conventional notification. It is the broadest iPhone control because it stops Lock Screen widget access rather than trying to change each widget’s content individually.
There is no documented Apple control in this menu that lets you preserve one Lock Screen widget while blocking another. If even one installed widget could expose information, the dependable system-level choice is to disable widget access altogether and use the widgets after unlocking.
iPhone: hide notification text without disabling alerts
If the information you want to hide is message or email text, changing widget access will not solve the problem. Instead, open Settings > Notifications > Show Previews. Apple provides three choices:
- Always: notification previews can be shown on the Lock Screen even while the phone is locked.
- When Unlocked: the alert can appear, but its preview text is withheld until the phone is unlocked.
- Never: notification preview text is not shown.
This lets you keep receiving alerts while reducing the amount of content visible to someone looking at the locked screen. It does not turn off the Widgets switch, so a Lock Screen widget can remain available unless you disable widget access separately.

Choose the smallest change that meets your privacy goal
- If you want no Lock Screen widget access at all, turn off Widgets in Allow Access When Locked.
- If you want alerts but not their words, change Show Previews to When Unlocked or Never.
- If both widgets and notification text are a concern, change both controls. They protect different information surfaces.
Preview settings can be a better compromise when you still need to notice that a time-sensitive alert arrived. Choosing When Unlocked keeps the alert’s existence visible while reserving the sender and message details for an authenticated session. Choosing Never is stricter, but it can make the Lock Screen less informative even for routine alerts.
Pixel: control sensitive information on the lock screen
Pixel phones expose lock-screen notification privacy controls that are separate from any particular widget. The names and layout can change with Android updates, so follow the labels displayed on your phone.
Use the lock-screen notification controls
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Open Notifications on lock screen.
- Review whether notifications are allowed on the lock screen and how they are presented.
- Turn off Show sensitive content if you want notification alerts to remain available without revealing private details.
On some Pixel software versions, the same controls are reachable through Wallpaper & style > Lock screen > Notifications on lock screen. If the wording differs, use Settings search for “lock screen notifications” and select the matching result.
These controls govern notification visibility and sensitive notification details. They do not necessarily remove every informational surface that can appear on a Pixel lock screen.

Pixel’s At a Glance surface can show information such as calendar events and updates. If that is the content you are trying to hide, open the At a Glance settings from the Lock Screen or home-screen surface and review its information and sensitive-content options. Google documents At a Glance’s privacy controls separately from the general lock-screen notification switch.
Turning off sensitive notification content can therefore leave an At a Glance item visible if its own settings still permit it. Treat At a Glance as a second information source to audit, not as another name for notification previews.
When testing a Pixel, identify whether the item is an icon, a notification card, or At a Glance text. The same calendar event might be represented in more than one place, and changing one control may not remove the other representation. Check the locked screen after each change instead of judging by the Settings label alone.

Other Android phones: expect different menus
Android’s general guidance makes clear that some lock-screen privacy controls are available only on certain devices. A phone from another manufacturer may offer a single lock-screen notification switch, per-app controls, a sensitive-content toggle, or no dedicated widget control at all. Menu names can also change between Android versions and the manufacturer’s interface.
Find the relevant controls
- Open Settings and use the search field.
- Search for lock screen notifications, sensitive notifications, show sensitive content, or notifications on lock screen.
- Open the result that controls lock-screen notification visibility.
- Look for options to hide sensitive content, suppress notifications entirely, or control visibility by app.
- Check the phone maker’s current support documentation if the search produces no matching option.
Do not assume that instructions written for Pixel apply unchanged to Samsung, Motorola, or another Android phone. The safest approach is to identify whether the setting hides all notifications, hides only their details, or controls a specific information surface before you change it.
A global “hide notifications” option is more restrictive than a sensitive-content option: it can remove the alert indicator as well as its text. Where a per-app choice exists, use it for apps such as messaging, mail, finance, health, or work tools that contain the information you most want to protect. Availability of that level of control is model-specific, so verify the result on the actual device.

How to decide which setting to change
You lend the phone to someone briefly
On iPhone, turn off Widgets before handing over a locked phone if you do not want Lock Screen widget information available. Remember that this also removes your own shortcut access. On Android, use the lock-screen notification privacy controls available on your model and check any separate surface, such as Pixel At a Glance.
You want alerts but not message content
Keep lock-screen notifications enabled and hide sensitive details. On iPhone, choose When Unlocked or Never for Show Previews. On Pixel, turn off Show sensitive content. On another Android phone, look for the equivalent sensitive-content or per-app option.

Check both possible sources. A calendar event could appear through a Lock Screen widget on iPhone, which is covered by the Widgets access switch. On Pixel, calendar information may also be surfaced by At a Glance, which has its own settings.
You need the owner’s quick access to remain available
Do not disable iPhone widget access merely to hide notification text. Use the preview controls instead. On Android, prefer a sensitive-content or per-app setting when the phone offers one, because disabling every lock-screen notification can remove useful alerts as well as private details.

What to check after changing the setting
- Lock the phone manually and wait for the Lock Screen to appear.
- Look for the widget or information surface you were concerned about.
- Send a test notification from an account or app that contains private text, then check whether only the alert indicator appears or whether the content is readable.
- Authenticate and confirm that the information is still available after unlocking. Privacy controls should not be confused with deleting the widget, calendar event, or notification.
- Repeat the check after a major operating-system update, because manufacturers can rename or relocate settings.
Troubleshooting when private information is still visible
The iPhone still shows a widget after you changed notification previews
Notification previews and widget access are separate. Return to Settings > Face ID & Passcode or Touch ID & Passcode, authenticate, and check Allow Access When Locked > Widgets. Changing Show Previews alone does not disable widgets.
The iPhone hides alerts that you wanted to keep
If you selected Never for Show Previews, the phone will not display preview text. Choose When Unlocked if you want the alert to be visible but its details protected until you authenticate.

A Pixel still shows calendar or update information
Check whether the item comes from At a Glance rather than from a notification. Review At a Glance’s own information and sensitive-content settings. The general lock-screen notification switch does not necessarily govern that surface.
The menu described online is missing on another Android phone
Search Settings for the terms used above and verify the Android version and phone model. Google’s general Android documentation notes that some controls are limited to certain devices. If no matching control exists, consult the manufacturer’s current support instructions instead of repeatedly changing unrelated notification settings.
Changing a setting did not affect a third-party information surface
Identify the source first: a widget, a notification, or a built-in surface such as At a Glance. Each can have a different control. A notification privacy change cannot be expected to remove a widget, and disabling widget access cannot be expected to rewrite notification text.
Android lock-screen widgets are not uniformly supported
Do not assume that every Android phone supports the same lock-screen widget model. An Android Developers FAQ published in March 2025 described planned AOSP availability for tablets and mobile devices after Android 16 QPR1, while identifying Pixel Tablet support at that time. That was roadmap context, not a guarantee that every current phone has identical widget controls.

The practical privacy rule remains the same: locate every information surface visible before authentication and adjust its own setting.
A two-minute privacy audit
- Write down what is actually visible: a widget, notification title, notification body, calendar card, weather detail, or another surface.
- Change only the control that corresponds to that source. This avoids disabling useful alerts when the problem is only their text.
- Lock the phone and inspect it from the angle and distance another person would use. A setting is not confirmed until the private detail is no longer readable.
- Unlock the phone and confirm that the underlying app, event, or widget data still exists. These controls change pre-authentication visibility; they do not erase information.
- Repeat the audit after adding a new widget, installing an app that posts alerts, changing phones, or installing a major system update.
Remember that the phone can expose more than one representation of the same information. For example, a calendar event may appear in a widget and as a notification. Protecting one representation does not prove that the other is hidden.
Privacy checklist before you leave the phone unattended
- On iPhone, decide whether Lock Screen widgets should be disabled under Allow Access When Locked.
- Set iPhone notification previews to Always, When Unlocked, or Never according to the level of detail you are comfortable displaying.
- On Pixel, review both lock-screen notification visibility and Show sensitive content.
- Check Pixel At a Glance independently for calendar events and updates.
- On other Android phones, verify whether controls are global, per-app, or unavailable on that model.
- Lock the phone and perform a real visual check after making changes.
- Recheck settings after operating-system updates or when changing the apps that supply widgets and notifications.
