Enforce access through your identity and authorization systems—not through the agent’s stated intent—and check each action against its target resource and current context. Add human approval for consequential operations, constrain tools, log activity, and make revocation part of the agent’s lifecycle.
Start by defining what each agent is allowed to do
Before connecting an agent to cloud accounts, data, APIs, or tools, document its business purpose and operational boundaries. Treat it as a nonhuman workload identity, not as a person or an informal extension of its developer.

- Purpose and owner: Name the task the agent performs and the accountable owner or sponsor.
- Approved scope: List the data, tools, APIs, cloud resources, and environments it may use.
- Lifecycle: Record who approves access, how it is reviewed, and how the agent and its credentials will be disabled or removed.
- Consequential actions: Identify operations that require a human approver, such as production changes, deletes, or external sends.
Microsoft’s organization-wide agent governance guidance recommends a centralized, enforceable baseline covering ownership, identity, lifecycle, data governance, security, development standards, and observability.
Give the agent a separate identity and bounded credentials
Create a dedicated agent or workload identity rather than reusing a developer’s personal account or credential. Keep agent permissions separate from human permissions, and ensure audit records identify which actions came from the agent.

When an agent acts on behalf of a user, preserve a verifiable representation of that initiating user in the call chain. Do not hand the agent the user’s credential or let a shared identity obscure who initiated the work. Prefer short-lived credentials and tightly scoped grants over broad, persistent access. AWS describes these as target practices in its Agentic AI Lens guidance on agent identity and permission management. Microsoft likewise states that customers retain responsibility for agent identity and credential scope in its AI agent shared-responsibility model.
Grant only the access each tool and task needs
Build an inventory of the agent’s required tools, APIs, data stores, and cloud resources, then assign the minimum useful permissions at the narrowest practical scope. A permission to call a tool should not silently confer access to every resource that tool can reach.

For each permission, make the intended action and target explicit: for example, reading a particular migration source is different from changing a production database. Reassess grants when the workflow, connected tools, data scope, or deployment environment changes. Google Cloud advises against using basic roles in production when a narrower predefined or custom role will meet the need, and recommends regularly auditing allow-policy changes in its IAM security guidance.
Authorize at the action boundary, not just at session start
Before a tool call executes, evaluate the agent principal, requested action, target resource, and relevant user or task context. A check performed only when a session begins does not provide the action-by-action authorization Microsoft describes. If an agent has several low-risk tools, their combined use must not imply permission for a higher-impact outcome that no policy explicitly allows.

Require a human approval gate for sensitive or irreversible work, including writes, deletes, production changes, or external sends. Where agents can execute code or browse, use sandboxing and egress controls to limit what the execution environment can reach. These are controls recommended in Microsoft’s shared-responsibility guidance; they are not a claim that one universal configuration exists across products.
Log agent activity so actions can be attributed and reviewed
Capture enough context to understand what happened and why. For tool activity, record the agent identity, tool or action, target resource, relevant inputs and outputs, authorization or approval decision, and correlation context. Protect this evidence from alteration by the agent itself, while ensuring authorized reviewers can access it.

- FIDO2 + FIDO U2F certified and supported USB security key
- Supports Computers, Laptops, Tablets, and Mobile Devices with a USB-C port
- Works without downloading any drivers. Supported OS: Android, Chrome OS, Windows, MacOS, Linux
- Durable design made to last for a long time with everyday use. Water-resistant (IP67)
- Helps protect your accounts from phishing and other cyber-attacks. Prevents your devices from unauthorized use.
Microsoft recommends logging each tool invocation with identity, inputs, outputs, and decision rationale. AWS emphasizes unambiguous attribution between agent and human activity. Google Cloud recommends using Cloud Audit Logs to audit policy changes. These recommendations are described respectively in Microsoft’s AI agent shared-responsibility model, the AWS Agentic AI Lens, and Google Cloud’s IAM security guidance.

Review access and test how to revoke it
Make access review part of the agent’s lifecycle, not a one-time launch task. Inspect effective permissions across cloud roles and connected systems, remove stale grants, and repeat the review when the workflow, tools, data, or deployment changes. Keep an owner and approver named so exceptions remain accountable.

Verify that the response works before it is needed: test disabling the agent, rotating credentials, invalidating tokens, and removing grants that are no longer required. AWS’s identity and permission guidance includes ongoing posture validation among its target practices; Microsoft’s least-privilege guidance for AI agents supports treating agent access as something to govern and refine over its lifecycle.
How the provider guidance differs
The control goals are comparable, but the published guidance does not establish that product features, names, or configurations are interchangeable. Use provider-native mechanisms to implement the principles in the environment where the agent runs.
Quick Recap
| Provider guidance | Controls it addresses | Implementation emphasis |
|---|---|---|
| AWS Agentic AI Lens | Distinct service identities, separation from human permissions, user-context propagation for on-behalf-of calls, short-lived credentials, permission boundaries, IAM Conditions, and continuous posture validation. | Preserve distinct agent and human identities and constrain delegated access. |
| Microsoft Azure AI agent shared-responsibility model | Least privilege per tool, authorization on each action, approval for sensitive operations, action auditing, sandboxing, and egress controls. | Responsibility allocation changes with deployment model; customers retain responsibility for data, agent identity, authorization, human oversight, and governance. |
| Google Cloud IAM security guidance | Narrower predefined or custom roles instead of basic roles in production when possible, and regular audits of allow-policy changes through Cloud Audit Logs. | Keep roles appropriately narrow and review policy changes. |
Operational control checklist
- Is there a documented purpose, owner, approved scope, and human approver for consequential access?
- Does the agent have its own identity, separate from developer and user identities?
- Are credentials short-lived where practical, and are grants scoped to the specific tools, actions, resources, and environments required?
- Does authorization run before each consequential tool action and consider its target and current context?
- Do high-impact actions require approval, and are code execution and browsing constrained with sandboxing and egress controls?
- Can reviewers trace tool calls and policy changes without allowing the agent to alter its own audit evidence?
- Have disabling the agent, rotating credentials, invalidating tokens, and removing stale grants been tested?
