Run FFmpeg on the Raspberry Pi and connect to the Pi over your network with SSH to start, stop, and manage the stream. The Pi needs network access and SSH configured before it can run headlessly. FFmpeg does the streaming; SSH is the remote command line, not an FFmpeg dashboard.
How remote control works
The arrangement has three parts: YouTube provides an ingest URL and stream key, FFmpeg runs on the Pi and sends the video to YouTube, and SSH lets you operate the Pi remotely. Raspberry Pi documents headless setup and SSH, while FFmpeg documents its command-line operation. Together, they provide a practical remote-control workflow; they do not imply that FFmpeg includes a built-in web control panel.

Prepare the Raspberry Pi for headless access
- Set up the operating system and network. Raspberry Pi recommends using Raspberry Pi Imager to prepare a headless system. Configure Wi-Fi or plan to connect Ethernet so the Pi can reach your network and YouTube.
- Enable remote access. Configure SSH during setup or enable it through the supported method for your Raspberry Pi OS installation. Confirm that you can connect from another device before relying on the Pi unattended. Raspberry Pi also offers Raspberry Pi Connect as a remote-access option; the documented sources do not establish that it is better or worse than SSH for controlling an FFmpeg process. Raspberry Pi remote access documentation
- Install or confirm FFmpeg. Check that FFmpeg is installed on the Pi and that the installed build supports the input format and output protocol you intend to use. FFmpeg capabilities vary by build, so do not assume an unspecified package supports every protocol.
Connect FFmpeg to YouTube
- Create or select a live stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or select the one you will use.
- Copy the ingest details. Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio into the FFmpeg output configuration. Treat the key like a password: do not share it, put it in screenshots, or expose it in logs. A channel owner or manager can reset a compromised key in Live Control Room. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings
- Choose a supported ingest protocol. YouTube recommends RTMPS for standard encoder streaming. FFmpeg describes RTMPS as RTMP over a secure SSL connection. Use it when the selected YouTube endpoint and your installed FFmpeg build support it. YouTube documents HLS for supported cases, including HDR or codecs that RTMP does not support; the right choice depends on the required codecs and configuration, and cannot be determined without those details. YouTube Help: Encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions · FFmpeg protocol documentation
- Build the FFmpeg output configuration. Use the input, encoding settings, stream URL, key, and protocol appropriate to your source and YouTube’s current requirements. There is no safe universal command for every Pi: the source, resolution, frame rate, encoding method, and installed FFmpeg build are unspecified. Consult FFmpeg’s command-line documentation and YouTube’s current encoder settings rather than copying a command that assumes different inputs or hardware. FFmpeg documentation
Start, monitor, and stop the stream over SSH
- Connect from your computer. Open an SSH session to the Pi using the hostname or network address configured for it.
- Start FFmpeg on the Pi. Run the prepared FFmpeg command in that session. FFmpeg runs on the Pi, so closing the SSH window may end a process tied to that session. If you need it to keep running after disconnecting, choose a persistent process-management method suited to your operating system and operating needs; no specific supervisor or service recipe is established here.
- Check YouTube’s preview. For a scheduled stream, start the encoder, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, then click Go live. Test the full path before an event.
- Monitor the session. Watch stream health and audio/video quality in YouTube Studio, and check the FFmpeg process on the Pi if the stream stops or looks wrong. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health. YouTube Help: Live encoder settings and troubleshooting
- Stop FFmpeg deliberately. Return to the SSH session running the process and stop it there. If the process runs under a service or other supervisor, use that method’s stop procedure instead. The exact command depends on how you launched it.
Choose remote access and ingest to fit the job
| Choice | When it fits | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| SSH | You want command-line control of FFmpeg on the Pi. | Network connectivity, SSH access, and a suitable way to keep the process running if you disconnect. |
| Raspberry Pi Connect | You want remote access through Raspberry Pi’s service. | Whether its available access method suits the process control you need. The cited documentation confirms it as an option but does not offer a comparative evaluation. |
| RTMPS | Standard encoder streaming when the selected YouTube endpoint and FFmpeg build support it. | Protocol support in the installed FFmpeg build and the stream configuration. |
| HLS | A supported YouTube configuration requires it, such as certain HDR or codec cases not supported by RTMP. | That the particular YouTube stream configuration and FFmpeg build support the required codecs and protocol. |
Important limits before choosing a Pi
A Raspberry Pi model cannot be recommended from the stream title alone. Performance depends on the Pi generation, operating system, video source, resolution, frame rate, and encoding choice. YouTube’s bitrate recommendations are ingest settings, not a guarantee that a particular Pi can encode and deliver that workload. Confirm the actual setup with a test stream rather than assuming a model-specific result.
Troubleshoot common remote-stream problems
- SSH cannot reach the Pi: check that the Pi has power and network connectivity, and that SSH is enabled. Confirm the hostname or address from the same network or remote-access setup you configured.
- FFmpeg rejects the output protocol: the installed build may lack support for it, or the URL may not match the chosen endpoint. Check the build’s protocol support and use an endpoint and protocol supported by both YouTube and FFmpeg.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: verify the stream URL and key in the FFmpeg output configuration. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room; YouTube requires channel-owner or manager permission to reset it.
- The stream appears in Studio but is not live to viewers: for a scheduled stream, wait for the preview and then select Go live in Live Control Room.
- The stream stops when SSH disconnects: the FFmpeg process may be tied to the interactive session. Use a process-management approach designed to keep it running after logout, and test disconnect and recovery behavior before an event.
- Video or audio quality is wrong: test the complete stream and inspect YouTube’s preview, stream health, and audio/video quality. Recheck source compatibility and encoder settings against YouTube’s current recommendations.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuously looping prerecorded video rather than a camera or live capture, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. For a free trial, start with StreamNeo.
