You can use an Android phone as a remote by installing the official app for the TV or streaming device, then pairing or connecting it. The right app depends on the platform: Google TV or Android TV uses Google TV; Roku uses the Roku app; Fire TV uses the Fire TV app; and Samsung Smart TVs can be controlled with SmartThings. These apps do not all provide the same controls, and some require the phone and device to share a Wi-Fi network.
Choose the app that matches your TV or streaming device

Set up your phone as a remote
Google TV and Android TV
- Install and open the Google TV app on your Android phone.
- Tap TVs nearby or Connect TV near the bottom right.
- Select your TV, enter the code displayed on its screen, and tap Pair.
Google documents the Google TV app’s remote controls for Google TV and Android TV, including playback, power, volume, Assistant, and text entry. You can also add the remote to Android Quick Settings for access from other screens. For Android TV Wi-Fi pairing, the phone and TV must be on the same network. Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer
Google supports two routes. In Google Home, turn on the TV and streaming device, open the app, and tap the device to bring up or hide the virtual remote. In Google TV, select the device, enter its on-screen code, and tap Pair. Google documents swipe navigation, playback controls, keyboard text entry, and virtual buttons for settings, bookmarks, and inputs. Its guide specifies Google TV mobile version 4.27.8.93 or later for Android; app naming may differ outside the United States. Roku
- Install the official Roku app from Google Play, if it is available in your market.
- Connect the phone and Roku to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Open the app, wait for it to find devices, then tap your Roku.
Roku says its app supports Roku devices running Roku OS 6.2 or later and lists Android 5.0 or later; features vary by device, and some may require a Roku account. Roku advises against third-party remote apps for security reasons. Its mobile-app access settings distinguish between limited functions, local-network control, and permissive access that could allow commands from devices outside the network. Amazon Fire TV
- Install the Fire TV app on your Android phone.
- Connect the phone to the same Wi-Fi network as the Fire TV.
- Open the app, select the available Fire TV, and follow the on-screen prompt.
Amazon documents on-screen navigation, keyboard input, and other menu options. Its cited help page does not state an Android minimum version, so check the current Google Play listing for that requirement. See Amazon’s Fire TV app setup instructions.
Samsung Smart TV
Samsung’s SmartThings app listing says the app can control Samsung Smart TVs. Set up or discover the TV in SmartThings and use the controls available for that model. Samsung cautions that some features may be limited on non-Samsung phones and that features can vary by country. Check the SmartThings Google Play listing for current compatibility and availability.

If the phone cannot find or control the device
- Check the Wi-Fi network. For Android TV, Roku, and Fire TV app control, confirm that the phone and device are connected to the same network. A guest network or separate Wi-Fi may prevent discovery.
- Complete the pairing step. For Google TV and Android TV, select the TV in the app and enter the code shown on the TV screen.
- Confirm compatibility and app availability. Supported models, features, Android requirements, and country availability differ. Check the platform’s official app listing or support page.
- Restart Android TV if discovery still fails. Google recommends checking the network names and unplugging the Android TV for 10 seconds, then setting up the virtual remote again.
- Use the manufacturer’s app. In particular, Roku warns against third-party control apps for security reasons.
What a phone remote can—and cannot—replace
A phone app can make navigation, text entry, and playback easier, but its available buttons depend on the device and platform. Do not assume every app can control power or volume; Google documents those controls for its TV remote, while Amazon’s cited Fire TV page describes navigation, keyboard, and menus. Samsung’s universal remote feature is different: it is a physical remote supplied with some TVs for controlling certain HDMI-connected devices, not an Android phone-control method. Samsung’s universal remote guide describes that separate feature.
