You can control a Fire TV Cube hands-free by saying its wake word, or press and hold the Fire TV remote’s Voice button to make an Alexa request. For navigating menus and choosing items on screen, use the remote’s directional ring and Select button: its Voice button does not support voice navigation or on-screen selections. If you want Alexa to control a cable or satellite box, configure the box using the setup path that matches how it is connected.

Talk to Alexa hands-free
Say the Cube’s wake word, then make a request. Amazon lists examples for Fire TV voice requests such as “Open [app name],” “Find [movie title],” and “Search for action movies.” Alexa can also control playback. Feature availability may vary by country. Amazon’s Fire TV voice-command help describes these general voice requests.

Use the remote’s Voice button
Press and hold the Voice button while speaking to Alexa, then release it when you are done. Amazon states that this button “doesn’t support voice navigation commands or making onscreen selections with your voice.” Use the directional ring to move through menus and the Select button to choose an item. Amazon’s Fire TV Cube help explains this distinction.

Change volume or mute the Cube microphone
Adjust volume with the buttons on top of the Cube or say “Volume [1-10].” To stop the Cube listening for its wake word, press the Mute button on top; the button lights red while the microphone is deactivated. Amazon’s Cube instructions describe these controls.

Set up Alexa control for a cable or satellite box
First check the wiring: is the set-top box connected to the TV, or plugged into the Cube’s HDMI IN? The setup menus differ. Follow the matching path rather than trying to apply both.
If the set-top box is connected to the TV
- On Fire TV, open Settings > Equipment Control > Manage Equipment > Add Equipment > Live TV > Set-top box.
- Choose Satellite or Cable, as appropriate, and select your provider.
- When prompted, use the TV remote to switch to a live channel.
- Press Fast Forward on the Fire TV remote and complete the on-screen prompts.
Amazon says the Cube and set-top box need line of sight for this control setup. Its documented example commands include “Tune to CNN,” “Channel up,” “Channel down,” “Tune to [channel number] on cable,” “Go up / down,” “Move left / right,” “Select,” “Open program guide,” and “Play / Pause.” These are examples, not a guarantee that every command works with every provider or box. See Amazon’s set-top-box setup instructions.

If the set-top box is plugged into the Cube’s HDMI IN

- From the Fire TV menu, open Inputs and highlight the HDMI tile connected to the set-top box.
- Press Menu on the Fire TV remote and choose Change Device Name.
- Select Cable or Satellite, then choose your provider. If it is not listed, select Provider not listed.
- Complete the on-screen connection test.
For this setup, Amazon specifies line of sight between the Cube and box and a high-speed HDMI cable rated at 18 Gbps or higher. The third-generation Cube specifications list HDMI 2.1 input, HDMI 2.1 output with ARC, and an IR extender. Read Amazon’s HDMI IN setup instructions and Fire TV device specifications.

Check provider compatibility
Amazon’s published provider list includes Comcast Xfinity, Charter Spectrum, DirecTV, Dish Network, Verizon Fios, Cox, Altice Optimum/Suddenlink, AT&T U-verse, Frontier, Mediacom, CenturyLink, Inc., and GCI Communication. Inclusion on the list does not establish compatibility with every box or region. Amazon also notes that some DISH box models require IR control. Check Amazon’s provider guidance for the applicable setup.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If Alexa or set-top-box control does not work
- Alexa will not select a menu item: use the remote’s directional ring and Select button; the Voice button is not a voice-selection control.
- The box does not respond: confirm which wiring path you use and follow only that setup sequence.
- Control is unreliable: check that the Cube and set-top box have line of sight.
- Direct HDMI IN setup fails: verify that the HDMI cable is rated at 18 Gbps or higher. Amazon also notes that HDMI control on the set-top box may need to be turned off in that box’s settings; consult its manual for the device-specific steps.
- Your provider or box is not recognized: check Amazon’s provider list and account for the note about some DISH models requiring IR control.
Amazon’s specifications identify Cube generations from first generation (2018) through third generation (2022). Because the HDMI IN setup guidance is for the third-generation model, older Cubes may offer different menus or setup options. Amazon’s device specifications list the generations and model details.
