Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe most reliable local-development setup is a dedicated Dockerfile dev stage, a Compose service that targets that stage, and controlled source synchronization with Compose Watch. Install dependencies in a cacheable layer, keep node_modules inside the container, persist database data in a named volume, and expose the Node inspector only when you are debugging. This gives you reproducible dependencies without reinstalling them for every source edit.

What the development setup should accomplish
Containerizing a development application is different from packaging a production release. A development container must support rapid edits, hot reloading, test and debugging tools, and a nearby database. It should not copy every host-side artifact into the image or rebuild the dependency tree whenever one source file changes.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →A practical architecture has four parts:
- A multi-stage Dockerfile with a dedicated
devtarget. - A Compose service that builds that target and publishes the application port.
- Compose Watch rules, or a deliberately scoped bind mount, for source changes.
- Separate services and persistent storage for stateful dependencies such as PostgreSQL.
Keep production stages separate. Development images can contain hot-reload packages, source maps, test frameworks, and an inspector; a production runner should contain only what is needed to serve the built application.
Prerequisites and a suitable project layout
Install Docker Engine or Docker Desktop with a Compose version that supports the develop.watch section. The commands below use the Compose V2 form, docker compose. Run them from the directory containing your Dockerfile and Compose file.

A simple Node project can start with this layout:
my-node-app/
├── Dockerfile
├── compose.yaml
├── package.json
├── package-lock.json
├── src/
│ └── server.js
└── .dockerignore
Commit the lockfile if reproducible installs matter. The lockfile lets the image use npm ci, which installs the exact dependency tree recorded by npm rather than resolving a new tree during every build.
Use a .dockerignore file so host artifacts do not enter the build context:

node_modules
npm-debug.log*
.git
.gitignore
Dockerfile*
compose*.yaml
.env
secrets/
Do not ignore files that are required to build the application. If your project compiles TypeScript or another language before starting, include its configuration and source directories in the context.
Build a cache-friendly development image
Dockerfile with a development target
Place dependency installation before the source copy. Docker can then reuse the dependency layer when only application code changes. BuildKit cache mounts preserve downloaded npm packages between builds without putting the cache into the final image.
# syntax=docker/dockerfile:1
FROM node:24-alpine AS dev
WORKDIR /app
RUN --mount=type=cache,target=/root/.npm \
--mount=type=bind,source=package.json,target=package.json \
--mount=type=bind,source=package-lock.json,target=package-lock.json \
npm ci
COPY . .
EXPOSE 3000
CMD ["npm", "run", "dev"]
The example uses Docker’s current Node guide pattern with a Node 24 Alpine image. Choose and pin the Node tag that your project supports, then update it deliberately as part of your normal dependency and runtime policy. Alpine is compact, but native npm modules may need additional build tools or a different base image; follow the requirements of the modules your project actually uses.
The two bind mounts in the RUN instruction expose only the package manifests while the image is being built. They allow Docker to calculate the dependency layer without copying the whole working tree first. The npm cache mount stores downloaded packages at /root/.npm for later builds.

If there is no lockfile yet
Without package-lock.json, use npm install and bind only package.json until you generate and commit a lockfile:
# syntax=docker/dockerfile:1
FROM node:24-alpine AS dev
WORKDIR /app
RUN --mount=type=cache,target=/root/.npm \
--mount=type=bind,source=package.json,target=package.json \
npm install
COPY . .
EXPOSE 3000
CMD ["npm", "run", "dev"]
Once the lockfile exists, switch to npm ci and bind both manifests. If npm reports that the manifest and lockfile are out of sync, update the lockfile on the host, commit the resulting change, and rebuild.
Keep development and production stages distinct
A complete Dockerfile can add separate dependency and runner stages. The development stage retains development dependencies and runs the watch script. A production path can install production-only dependencies, compile the application, and copy only the compiled output and runtime dependencies into a smaller runner image. Compose should explicitly select target: dev so a local build cannot accidentally use the production runner.
Create the Compose service
Minimal application service
services:
app:
build:
context: .
target: dev
ports:
- "3000:3000"
The left side of the port mapping is the host port; the right side is the port inside the container. Your Node server must listen on the container interface, not only on loopback. Configure the development server to bind to 0.0.0.0; otherwise the process may be running while the published port remains unreachable from the host.
Start, rebuild, and stop
- Build and start the service with
docker compose up --build. - Open the application at
http://localhost:3000if the server exposes that port. - Follow logs with
docker compose logs -f app. - Open a shell for inspection with
docker compose exec app shon Alpine, orbashwhen the image includes it. - Stop the stack with
docker compose down. Add-vonly when you intentionally want to remove named volumes and their data.
When only source files change, do not rebuild manually. Use the watch workflow below. Rebuild when package manifests, the Dockerfile, or another image input changes.
Keep source edits in sync
Compose Watch: controlled synchronization
Compose Watch lets you describe what should happen for each path. A typical Node setup synchronizes the source directory and rebuilds the image when dependencies change:

services:
app:
build:
context: .
target: dev
ports:
- "3000:3000"
develop:
watch:
- action: sync
path: ./src
target: /app/src
- action: rebuild
path: package.json
- action: rebuild
path: package-lock.json
Start the service and watcher with docker compose watch, or use docker compose up --watch where that form is supported by your installed Compose version. The sync action copies changed files into the running container without rebuilding the image. A manifest change triggers a rebuild so npm dependencies are recalculated.
Add other source directories explicitly when your project needs them, such as test, public, or a generated configuration directory. Do not synchronize node_modules. Its large file tree creates unnecessary I/O, and native or compiled modules installed for the host platform may not work in the container. Let the image own the container’s dependency directory.
Compose Watch is intended for services built locally. It provides per-path actions and finer control than sharing the entire project directory.
Bind mounts: direct host-container sharing
A bind mount maps a host file or directory directly into a container. It is useful when tools must see host files immediately or when you need to share build artifacts:
services:
app:
build:
context: .
target: dev
ports:
- "3000:3000"
volumes:
- ./src:/app/src
A broad mount such as .:/app is tempting, but it can hide files copied into the image, overwrite the container’s installed dependencies, and expose host-specific artifacts. If you use bind mounts, scope them to the directories that genuinely require direct sharing and keep /app/node_modules in the container.
Watch or bind mount?
| Consideration | Compose Watch | Bind mount |
|---|---|---|
| Update granularity | Per-path actions such as sync or rebuild | Direct sharing of the mounted directory |
| Dependency directory | Can leave node_modules inside the image and exclude it from synchronization |
Must be scoped carefully so a host directory does not replace container dependencies |
| Rebuild behavior | Manifest changes can trigger an explicit rebuild | Changing a manifest does not rebuild unless you run a build yourself |
| Cross-platform behavior | Copies selected changes and avoids sharing unnecessary files | Filesystem performance and file-notification behavior vary by host and Docker backend |
| Best fit | Locally built services needing controlled development feedback | Workflows that require direct filesystem access or artifact sharing |
Docker describes Watch as offering greater granularity than is practical with a bind mount. Choose one primary synchronization method for a service instead of layering overlapping mounts and watch rules that can race with one another.

Add PostgreSQL without losing database state
Run the database as a separate Compose service. Application source can be synchronized freely while database files remain in a named volume. A health check prevents the application from being started before PostgreSQL is accepting connections.

healthcheck:
test: ["CMD-SHELL", "pg_isready -U app -d appdb"]
interval: 5s
timeout: 5s
retries: 10
volumes:
postgres-data:
The service name db is the hostname visible to the application on Compose’s internal network; do not use localhost for that connection from inside the app container. The named volume survives ordinary container recreation. Removing it with docker compose down -v deletes the stored database data.
The password in this short example is suitable only for a disposable local stack. Keep real credentials out of committed Compose files. For a local secret-backed setup, create an untracked file such as secrets/db_password.txt and mount it as a Compose secret:
services:
db:
image: postgres:16-alpine
secrets:
- db_password
environment:
POSTGRES_USER: app
POSTGRES_DB: appdb
POSTGRES_PASSWORD_FILE: /run/secrets/db_password
secrets:
db_password:
file: ./secrets/db_password.txt
Add the secrets directory to .gitignore and provide the file separately on each development machine.

Private package credentials must not be copied into ordinary Dockerfile layers. A value written by commands such as RUN echo ... can remain discoverable in image history or cached layers. Use Docker build secrets for private npm modules, following the secret syntax supported by the Dockerfile frontend and Compose version you use.
Keep ordinary runtime settings in Compose environment variables or an untracked environment file. Keep passwords, tokens, and certificates in mounted secrets. Do not commit a populated .env file or a password-bearing connection string. Separate build-time credentials from runtime credentials: a token needed to download a private package should not automatically be present in the running application.

Attach a debugger inside the container
Expose the Node inspector
Publish a second port for the inspector and make Node listen on all container interfaces. One convenient development setting is:
services:
app:
build:
context: .
target: dev
ports:
- "3000:3000"
- "9229:9229"
environment:
NODE_OPTIONS: --inspect=0.0.0.0:9229
Whether NODE_OPTIONS reaches the actual application process depends on the development runner. If the runner launches a child process, configure that runner to pass the inspector flag to the Node process that owns your application. Never publish the inspector port on a shared or publicly reachable interface; it is intended for local development.
Attach from VS Code
Create a launch configuration that attaches to port 9229 on the host:
{
"version": "0.2.0",
"configurations": [
{
"type": "node",
"request": "attach",
"name": "Attach to container",
"address": "localhost",
"port": 9229,
"localRoot": "${workspaceFolder}",
"remoteRoot": "/app",
"restart": true
}
]
}
Set breakpoints in files that exist under /app and ensure source maps point back to the host workspace when using TypeScript or a bundler.
Attach from Chrome DevTools
With the inspector port published, open the browser’s Node inspection page, add localhost:9229 as a target if necessary, and select the running Node process. The process must be started with the inspector enabled before an attach attempt can succeed.
A repeatable daily workflow
- Confirm that
package-lock.jsonmatchespackage.json. - Build the development target once with
docker compose build app. - Start the application and database with
docker compose up --watch. - Edit files under
src; Watch synchronizes them without reinstalling dependencies. - Edit a package manifest when adding or removing a dependency; the rebuild rule recreates the image and runs npm installation again.
- Use
docker compose logs -f appanddocker compose logs -f dbto distinguish application failures from database readiness failures. - Run one-off commands in the same environment, for example
docker compose exec app npm test. - Stop with
docker compose downwhen finished, leaving the named database volume intact for the next session.
Troubleshoot the common failure modes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Port 3000 is published but the browser cannot connect | The server listens on 127.0.0.1 inside the container |
Configure the development server to listen on 0.0.0.0 and verify the process logs show the expected port. |
| Every source edit triggers npm installation | The whole project is copied or rebuilt for each change | Install dependencies before COPY . ., use the npm cache mount, and synchronize only source paths. |
| The container cannot find a package after a host mount is added | A broad bind mount hides /app/node_modules |
Remove the broad mount or mount only source directories; keep dependencies in the image. |
| Native module errors appear after synchronization | Host-compiled artifacts were shared with the container | Stop synchronizing node_modules, rebuild the image, and install modules for the container’s platform. |
| Compose Watch does nothing | The installed Compose version does not support the configured watch workflow, or the path is not covered by a rule | Check the installed Compose version, use the supported watch command, and add an explicit rule for the changed directory. A scoped bind mount is the fallback when direct sharing is required. |
| The app starts before PostgreSQL accepts connections | The app depends only on container creation order | Add a database healthcheck and use condition: service_healthy under depends_on. The application should still retry transient connection failures. |
| Database data disappears after a reset | The named volume was removed with down -v |
Run ordinary docker compose down for routine shutdown and back up data before deliberately deleting volumes. |
npm ci fails immediately |
The lockfile is absent or does not match the manifest | Generate or update the lockfile, commit it, and rebuild the development target. |
| The debugger cannot attach | The inspector is not enabled, the port is not published, or the runner starts a different Node process | Publish 9229, pass --inspect=0.0.0.0:9229 to the actual application process, and attach to localhost:9229. |
Keep the production boundary clear
Do not ship the development Compose service as your production deployment merely because it works locally. Development requires source synchronization, file watchers, debuggers, and development dependencies. Production should use a separate runner stage that receives compiled output and production-only dependencies.
