Contain a suspected Linux server compromise through a coordinated decision that limits attacker reach while preserving a safe path to collect evidence where feasible. There is no universal rule to keep a host connected, disconnect it immediately, or power it off: the right choice depends on active harm, service and safety consequences, and the evidence responders need.
What should you do first?
Coordinate the response before taking action, unless an immediate threat to people or critical operations leaves no time. Activate the organization’s incident response plan and involve the incident lead, system owner, security responders, and legal or privacy advisers as appropriate. If responders suspect internal communications are monitored, use an out-of-band channel.

An uncoordinated containment step can alert an attacker, who may then move laterally or preserve access. CISA’s #StopRansomware Guide discusses coordinated isolation and the need to weigh containment against evidence preservation. Agree on who is authorized to act, what operational impact is acceptable, and how the action and its timing will be recorded.

How should you contain the server?
Choose the narrowest effective action that reduces the attacker’s ability to reach systems or continue harmful activity without unnecessarily closing off evidence collection. Consider whether data is being exfiltrated, whether the attacker is moving through the network, what the server supports, and whether service disruption could create safety or business risks.

| Containment choice | Potential benefit | Risk or trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Apply network-level controls | Can restrict attacker reach while leaving the host powered and potentially accessible to responders. | Controls must be scoped to the incident; continued connectivity may leave some exposure, and a visible change could alert an actor. |
| Use narrowly scoped isolation | Can limit the server’s communications while preserving power and, where the setup allows, responder access for evidence capture. | May interrupt dependent services. The available access and operational impact depend on the environment. |
| Disconnect the host from the network | Stops its network communications when less disruptive controls are not sufficient or available. | May alert the attacker and can prevent remote evidence collection; it does not by itself preserve volatile data. |
| Power down the host | May be necessary when there is no other practical way to stop immediate spread or harm. | Destroys volatile evidence and interrupts the service. Treat this as a risk decision, not a routine first step. |
CISA warns that disconnecting before imaging can tip off an attacker, while leaving a compromised system connected can allow exposure to continue. These competing risks mean isolation is not a blanket instruction: coordinate it against the attacker’s activity and the consequences of waiting. The CISA Federal Government Cybersecurity Incident and Vulnerability Response Playbooks (2023) also address preserving endpoint, perimeter, and internal-network evidence during response.
Should you shut down a compromised server?
Do not reboot or power off reflexively. Volatile information can disappear at shutdown; CISA’s fact sheet, “So You Think You’ve Been Compromised…”, calls volatile memory “a gold mine of forensics data.” If responders can safely collect live evidence first, doing so may preserve information unavailable from a powered-off host.

That does not mean a server must stay online at all costs. If no other action can stop active spread or immediate harm, power-down may be justified even though volatile evidence will be lost. Record why that decision was made and what was done; the incident lead should weigh evidence needs against exposure and service or safety impact.
What should you capture before isolating or powering down?
When the situation permits, collect volatile information before shutdown and keep live collection minimal and deliberate. NIST’s Computer Security Incident Handling Guide (SP 800-61 Rev. 2) identifies several kinds of potentially useful live evidence:

Do not assume commands run on a compromised host report trustworthy results: malware may have replaced or altered tools, and collection actions themselves change system state. NIST recommends minimizing commands and using trusted tools from write-protected media where feasible. Document each action and its time. The available official guidance does not provide a current, distribution- and kernel-specific Linux command sequence, so select tools through the incident response plan and qualified forensic responders rather than treating a generic shell recipe as safe for every system.
How should you preserve disk evidence?
If disk evidence is needed, use an established forensic acquisition workflow, document the process, and conduct analysis on a copy rather than the original. NIST’s Guide to Integrating Forensic Techniques into Incident Response (SP 800-86) distinguishes a file-level logical backup from a bit-stream image:

| Acquisition | What it captures | Trade-off and use |
|---|---|---|
| Logical backup | Directories and files selected for copying; it may omit deleted data and slack space. | Less comprehensive than a bit-stream image for residual or deleted data. Choose it only when its scope fits the investigative need. |
| Bit-stream image | The media, including free space and slack space, which may retain data a file-level copy misses. | More time- and storage-intensive; appropriate when a fuller media acquisition is needed. |
Record the media identifiers, imaging equipment and software version, acquisition steps, and custody of each item. Label and secure original evidence. If using a hardware forensic write blocker, match it to the storage interface and the organization’s established acquisition process; the guidance does not establish compatibility for a particular device.

Collect relevant records beyond the server itself: endpoint, perimeter, and internal-network logs, along with audit, connection, transaction, system-performance, and user-activity records. Prioritize centralized or remote copies because local evidence may have been changed or cleared. Protect logs against unauthorized access or deletion and retain them under organizational policy and applicable compliance requirements, as CISA advises in Use Logging on Business Systems.

Maintain an evidence log for each item collected. Include what it is, who collected it, when it was collected, the tool and version used, and where it is stored. A clear record of handling supports later technical review and helps establish how evidence moved through the response.
When should you bring in forensic or legal specialists?
Escalate when responders lack the tools or experience to acquire evidence reliably, when the attacker may retain access, or when evidence could be used in legal, regulatory, employment, or disciplinary proceedings. CISA’s AA22-320A advisory recommends considering third-party incident response support to help ensure eradication and avoid residual access.
NIST describes SP 800-86 as practical guidance, not an all-inclusive step-by-step forensic manual or legal advice; see its publication page. Consult qualified forensic experts and counsel when the evidence or consequences warrant it.
