How to Connect Wowza to YouTube Live with RTMP

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To send a Wowza stream to YouTube Live, create or select a YouTube live event, copy its event-specific Stream URL and Stream key, then configure and enable a matching YouTube or custom RTMP target in the Wowza product you actually use. Start the Wowza source and confirm YouTube shows an incoming preview before you click Go Live.

First, identify which Wowza product you use

“Wowza Streaming Cloud,” “Wowza Video,” and “Wowza Streaming Engine” are not interchangeable names for one interface. An archival Wowza Streaming Cloud user guide documents custom RTMP delivery, including YouTube, but current Wowza setup guidance covers different workflows in Streaming Engine and Wowza Video. Match the instructions below to the product and interface in your account; do not try to apply one product’s field mapping to another.

Wowza product Documented target setup Important distinction
Wowza Streaming Engine Dedicated YouTube Live stream target Maps destination host and application separately; default RTMP port is 1935.
Wowza Video External service/custom target using RTMP Enter YouTube’s primary URL and stream key; the documented flow leaves username and password blank.
Wowza Streaming Cloud Custom RTMP capability appears in an archival guide A current Cloud-specific click-by-click interface guide is not established here, so use the field help in your account rather than assuming a current screen matches the archive.

Get the YouTube event URL and key

  1. Open YouTube Studio and create a live event or select the event you intend to use.
  2. Open that event’s stream settings and copy the Stream URL and Stream key. Use the details for the correct event, not a key copied from another event by mistake.
  3. Keep the key private. It is a credential that allows an encoder or service to send video to your YouTube stream; do not show it in screenshots, public text, or an unsecured support request.

YouTube’s event settings are authoritative for the URL and key to use. Check the event’s current instructions for any activation, eligibility, or encoder requirements applicable to your channel; those rules can change.

Configure the target in Wowza Streaming Engine

Wowza’s Streaming Engine guide describes a dedicated YouTube Live stream target. Use that workflow only if your source is running through Streaming Engine.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. In the Streaming Engine manager, open the stream-target configuration for the application handling your source and create a YouTube Live target.
  2. Enter the incoming source stream name and the YouTube destination information requested by the target. Use the event-specific YouTube URL and key you copied from Studio.
  3. For the documented URL mapping, put the host portion in the destination host field and the path after the host in the destination application field. Leave destination application instance blank. Wowza documents RTMP’s default port as 1935; do not append URL components to the wrong field.
  4. Enable stream targets if they are disabled, then enable the individual YouTube target.
  5. Ensure the source stream is publishing into the Wowza application. Open YouTube Live Control Room and wait for its incoming preview before selecting Go Live.

Configure the target in Wowza Video

Wowza Video uses an external service or custom target workflow, not Streaming Engine’s host/application mapping. Follow Wowza’s Wowza Video instructions and the field help shown in your current account.

  1. Choose the output rendition to send, then add an external service or custom target.
  2. Select RTMP as the delivery protocol.
  3. Enter YouTube’s primary Stream URL and the event’s Stream key in the corresponding URL and stream-name/key fields. The legacy Wowza guide says to omit the rtmp:// prefix and trailing slash from URL fields; if your current interface labels or validates the field differently, follow its current field help.
  4. Leave target username and password blank in the documented Wowza Video flow. A backup URL is optional in the legacy guide.
  5. Enable the output/target and start the Wowza source. Check YouTube Live Control Room for an incoming preview before selecting Go Live.

Choose a suitable output rendition

In these workflows, Wowza sends a selected output to YouTube; YouTube then transcodes it for adaptive playback. This is not the same as configuring Wowza to send multiple YouTube playback renditions. The available passthrough-transcoder option can depend on the Wowza subscription, so do not assume it is included in every plan.

Wowza’s 2025 Wowza Video guidance lists support up to 2160p (3840 × 2160) at 60 fps and recommends an I-frame at least every two seconds, no more than four seconds apart. The page also warns that YouTube may change encoder requirements. Treat these as Wowza-published guidance, not a guarantee that every account, event, or current YouTube configuration accepts those exact settings; check YouTube’s current encoder settings and the limits shown for your event before choosing resolution, frame rate, bitrate, or keyframe interval.

Check the stream before going live

  • Source is running: Wowza must be receiving the intended input stream. A configured destination cannot forward video that has not reached the Wowza application.
  • Target is enabled: Check both the overall stream-target/output setting and the individual destination target.
  • Event details match: Confirm the stream URL and key belong to the selected YouTube event and are entered in the correct Wowza fields.
  • Preview appears: Wait for YouTube Live Control Room to report an incoming stream and show a preview before clicking Go Live.
  • Content is cleared: Confirm you have the necessary rights to every video, soundtrack, image, and other material in the stream. Live broadcasts can be interrupted or restricted for copyright or policy reasons. YouTube may also assess monetization under its reused-content rules; permission to use material and eligibility for monetization are separate questions.

Troubleshoot common connection problems

Symptom Likely checks and fixes
YouTube shows no incoming video Verify the Wowza source is actually publishing, the target/output is enabled, and the event-specific URL and key are correct. Then check the target’s status or logs in the Wowza product you use.
Wowza cannot connect to the destination Check that you selected RTMP, used the correct URL/key fields for that product, and did not mix Wowza Video’s custom-target fields with Streaming Engine’s host/application fields. For Streaming Engine, confirm the documented default port 1935 is not blocked in the network path.
Target connects but the preview is delayed or rejected Allow time for YouTube to receive the stream, then inspect the event’s Live Control Room warnings. Compare the selected output’s resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current event-specific guidance.
Stream is unstable or playback quality is poor Check the incoming source and Wowza output for interruptions, then reduce the selected output settings if they exceed what the source or destination path can sustain. Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance rather than relying solely on older settings.
The setup screen does not match these steps Confirm whether the account is Wowza Streaming Engine, Wowza Video, or legacy Streaming Cloud. Use that product’s current documentation and on-screen field descriptions; the Cloud guide available here is archival.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps uploaded videos looping 24/7, rather than forwarding a live source through Wowza, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not stream from a camera.
