To connect two monitors to a Windows PC, connect each display through a video output the PC supports, then press Windows key + P and choose Extend. Arrange and identify the screens in Settings > System > Display. Before buying a cable, adapter, or dock, check that the PC can drive two independent displays: a basic splitter duplicates one image rather than extending the desktop.
Check that your PC can support two independent monitors
Start with the computer’s specifications, not just the number of sockets on its case. The graphics adapter and PC determine how many independent displays are supported, and the answer can depend on the display modes you want. Check the PC or graphics-adapter manufacturer’s guidance for the number of displays, resolutions, and refresh rates supported.

Compare the PC’s video outputs with the inputs on both monitors. HDMI and DisplayPort are common connections; some systems also support video over USB-C. The port shape alone does not establish that a USB-C connection carries video or that a particular dock will support two displays.
- Two supported video outputs: Connect one monitor to each output with cables that fit the PC and monitor.
- One video output: A compatible docking station or video adapter may provide another display path. Confirm with the PC manufacturer that the exact PC, dock or adapter, and intended display modes are supported.
- Basic splitter: Do not use an ordinary splitter to create an extended desktop. Microsoft explains that a display splitter duplicates the same signal rather than providing separate screens: Troubleshoot external monitor connections in Windows.
If you are considering a DisplayPort daisy chain, treat it as a hardware-specific option, not a feature guaranteed by every DisplayPort connection. Dell’s instructions require compatible hardware with Multi-Stream Transport (MST): connect the PC or dock to the first monitor’s DisplayPort input, then its DisplayPort output to the second monitor; enable MST on the first monitor and leave it off on the last. See Dell’s MST daisy-chain instructions and verify your devices support the arrangement.

Connect the monitors and extend the Windows desktop
- Connect the displays. Use separate supported PC outputs, or a compatible dock or video adapter. Match each cable to the ports at both ends.
- Select the monitor inputs. Turn on each monitor and choose the input used by its cable if the monitor does not switch to it automatically.
- Choose the display mode. Press Windows key + P, then select Extend to use the monitors as one larger desktop. Choose Duplicate if both screens should show the same content.
- Identify and arrange the screens. Open Settings > System > Display, select Identify, and drag the numbered display diagrams to match the monitors’ physical positions. Apply the arrangement and move the pointer across the screens to confirm it behaves as expected.
Microsoft’s step-by-step guidance for Windows 10 and Windows 11 is in How to use multiple monitors in Windows.
Choose the right connection path
| Connection path | When it may fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Two PC video outputs | The PC has two outputs that support separate displays. | PC display capability, matching cable and monitor inputs, and support for the desired resolution and refresh rate. |
| Docking station | The PC supports a compatible dock and needs additional display outputs. | PC and dock compatibility, independent-display support, available outputs, and the desired display modes. Microsoft recommends checking with the PC manufacturer for suitable docks. |
| USB video adapter | A suitable PC connection and adapter can provide another display output. | Whether the specific PC port supports video and whether the adapter supports the intended monitor configuration. |
| DisplayPort MST daisy chain | Compatible PC or dock and monitors support MST and the required DisplayPort input/output arrangement. | Device-specific MST support and monitor settings; follow the manufacturer’s instructions. |
| Basic display splitter | Showing the same signal on multiple screens is acceptable. | It duplicates the image; it does not create two independent extended displays. |
Do not assume that USB-C, a dock, or a graphics port supports a particular monitor count, resolution, or refresh rate based on the connector alone. The exact result depends on the PC, graphics adapter, dock or adapter, monitors, and their specifications.

Fix a second monitor that is not detected
- Check the selected mode. Press Windows key + P and choose Extend if you want separate screens.
- Check the physical connection. Make sure the cable is firmly seated at both ends and that each monitor is on the correct input. Try another compatible cable or PC output if available; this can help isolate a faulty cable or port.
- Isolate accessories. Temporarily disconnect docks, dongles, and adapters, then reconnect the components needed for the two-monitor setup. This can help identify a connection conflict.
- Ask Windows to look again. Go to Settings > System > Display > Multiple displays and select Detect.
- Recheck display capability. If one external monitor works but the second does not, the PC or graphics adapter may not support the requested number of displays. Check the manufacturer’s specifications for your exact model.
- Use driver steps if the setup recently stopped working. Microsoft lists resetting the graphics driver with Windows key + Ctrl + Shift + B, restarting the PC, and checking for or reinstalling the display driver as later troubleshooting options. See Microsoft’s external-monitor troubleshooting guide.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 support
The basic multi-monitor setup steps apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11. However, Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. That support date does not change the display steps, but it matters when deciding whether to continue using Windows 10.
