This error means Windows blocked an unauthenticated guest login to an SMB shared folder. The safest fix is to configure the computer, NAS, or router hosting the share to require a named account, then connect with that account. Enable insecure guest logons on your Windows PC only if the share cannot use credentials, the device is trusted, and your administrator permits the security exception.
What the security-policy error means
The message “You can’t access this shared folder because your organization’s security policies block unauthenticated guest access” identifies a guest-access refusal: the remote SMB server is offering access without authenticating a user, and Windows is blocking that connection. It does not by itself mean the network cable, share path, or Windows installation is broken. Microsoft includes this wording in its File Explorer shared-folder troubleshooting guidance.

The issue can occur with shares hosted by a Windows PC, a NAS, or storage attached to a router. A Windows update may be when the error first appears, but do not assume that Windows 11 version 24H2 introduced guest blocking: insecure guest logons are a separate Windows security policy. Version 24H2 matters for another reason—SMB signing requirements changed in certain editions, which can also affect guest shares and older SMB devices.

Fix it in the safest order
1. Identify the share and confirm the exact message
Note the device hosting the folder, its share name or network path, and whether Windows displays the unauthenticated guest-access message. Ask the device owner or administrator whether the share is intentionally set up for guest access. The exact message points to guest authentication; a different error may instead involve discovery, permissions, signing, or the network path.

2. Set up an account on the device hosting the share
If the Windows PC, NAS, or router supports authenticated sharing, create or enable a dedicated account on that device and grant it access to the folder. Then connect using that account’s username and password. A Windows sign-in on your client PC is not necessarily an account on the remote device; use credentials recognized by the share host.
Microsoft recommends disabling insecure guest logons and configuring file servers for authenticated access. This avoids making unauthenticated access the client’s workaround. See Microsoft’s LanmanWorkstation Policy CSP.

3. Enable guest logons only when credentials are not an option
Use this client-side exception only for a specific, trusted share when the device cannot provide authenticated access and the device owner or administrator approves. It allows unauthenticated access and weakens protections for those guest sessions, including SMB signing and encryption. Do not apply it on a work-managed PC without authorization.
- Press
Win + R, entergpedit.msc, and press Enter to open Local Group Policy Editor. This editor may not be available in every Windows edition. - Go to
Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Network > Lanman Workstation. - Open Enable insecure guest logons, select Enabled, and apply the change.
- Try the share again. If Windows still cannot connect, do not assume that guest policy is the only problem; continue with the checks below.

Check SMB signing on newer Windows versions
Guest authentication and SMB signing are related but distinct. Microsoft says SMB signing is required by default on Windows 11 version 24H2 and later for Enterprise, Pro, and Education editions, and on Windows Server 2025. A signing requirement can conflict with a guest share or a third-party SMB server that does not support the required behavior.

If the error began on one of those systems, check whether the share host can be configured to support SMB signing. Prefer correcting the server configuration rather than weakening the Windows client. Microsoft’s Control SMB signing behavior documentation says, “We don’t recommend disabling SMB signing as a workaround for third-party servers.” Review Microsoft’s SMB security hardening in Windows Server and Windows Client guidance before changing security settings.

Once the exact guest refusal is resolved, a remaining connection failure may have a different cause. Troubleshoot the symptom rather than repeatedly changing guest or signing policies.

- The device or share does not appear in File Explorer: Check network discovery and file and printer sharing, and follow Microsoft’s guidance for the Function Discovery services.
- The path opens but access is denied: Confirm the account has permission both on the share and on the folder or files themselves.
- The network path cannot be found: Verify the device is reachable and the share name or path is correct. Microsoft’s guidance includes testing a connection with
net use. - The server requires an older SMB protocol: Check the server’s SMB version and Microsoft’s SMB 1.0 client guidance before enabling legacy protocol support. Do not enable SMB 1.0 merely because a guest-policy error appeared.
