Check that your channel can livestream
YouTube’s live-streaming requirements say a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. The general live-streaming page also sets a minimum age of 16. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable the feature well before you need to broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder live-streaming requirements and general live-streaming requirements.

Create or select a stream in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and choose Create > Go Live to enter Live Control Room.
- Open the Stream tab. Create a stream or select the existing stream you plan to use.
- Check the stream’s title, privacy, and scheduling details. Reusing a previous stream can carry over its metadata, settings, and stream key. YouTube’s live-stream settings help explains these controls.
Enter the YouTube destination in your encoder
- In your software encoder’s stream settings, select a YouTube destination or preset if one is available.
- If the encoder asks for a server or URL, copy the stream URL shown for the selected stream in Live Control Room and paste it into that field.
- Copy the corresponding stream key into the encoder’s Stream Key field. You need the URL and key from the same YouTube stream; a mismatched key will not connect to the intended stream.
YouTube describes stream keys as credentials that tell the encoder where to send its feed. Treat yours like a password: do not publish it or show it in screenshots or recordings. If it is exposed, a channel owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room; replace the old key in the encoder afterward. Editors and viewers cannot reset the key. Choose RTMPS when your encoder supports it
RTMPS sends RTMP over a TLS/SSL connection. Some encoders offer a YouTube RTMPS preset; otherwise, use the lock icon beside the Stream URL field in Live Control Room to reveal the RTMPS URL and copy that exact address. The ordinary RTMP URL may be shown by default, so verify the address begins with rtmps. Your encoder must support RTMPS. YouTube’s RTMPS instructions and troubleshooting cover the URL and connection errors.

If an RTMPS connection reports an SSL error, check that you pasted the full RTMPS URL and confirm whether your encoder requires an explicit port; YouTube’s troubleshooting example uses port 443. For a timeout, verify the URL and confirm the encoder supports RTMPS.
Start the encoder and verify the viewing path
- Start the encoder and wait for the incoming feed to appear in Live Control Room.
- Check the preview, audio, and video before going live. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s workflow calls for waiting until the preview is ready, then selecting Go live. An immediate-live stream may start its watch page when the encoder begins sending content; follow the on-screen flow for the stream you created.
- Check that viewers can reach the stream through the channel and watch pages. Test access on a mobile device as well as your production setup.
- To finish, stop sending from the encoder and use End Stream when that control appears in the scheduled workflow. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived.
YouTube recommends setting up encoders at least two hours ahead and starting them at least 15 minutes before the event. That gives you time to inspect the preview and fix issues before viewers arrive. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and live-streaming tips.

Choose the connection method your encoder supports

YouTube’s encoder help lists software and standalone hardware encoders, and its directory of verified encoders can help you check compatibility. Fix common connection and broadcast problems
No incoming preview
- Make sure the encoder is using the URL and stream key for the same selected YouTube stream.
- If using RTMPS, check that the address is the RTMPS URL and that your encoder supports it.
Unstable or insufficient upload
Upload capacity, not download speed, determines whether the encoder can reliably send the feed. YouTube recommends keeping 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate. If you are sending both a primary and backup stream, account for the upload required by both. See YouTube’s encoder bandwidth guidance.

Bad audio or video, or a last-minute start
Prepare the encoder well ahead of the event, start it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time, and inspect the Live Control Room preview. This can reveal a missing source, an audio problem, or a connection issue while there is still time to correct it.
Viewers cannot find the stream
Check the privacy and schedule settings in Studio, then verify that the stream is accessible from the channel and watch pages. Check from a mobile device too.

The stream key may have been exposed
Have a channel owner or manager reset the key in Live Control Room, then update the encoder with the replacement. Do not continue using a key that may be compromised.
