Connecting a SATA drive to a power supply takes one cable and a few seconds: with the PSU unplugged from the wall, push the flat, keyed SATA power plug into the drive’s power socket. If your PSU is modular, the other end of that cable goes into the PSU’s SATA/peripheral output, and it must be a cable made for that exact PSU. The drive also needs a separate SATA data cable that runs to the motherboard.
SATA power vs. SATA data: two different cables
People often say “SATA cable” for two different things, and mixing them up is the most common reason a new drive does not show up.

| Cable | Runs from | Runs to | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| SATA power | PSU | Drive (SSD, HDD, optical drive or other SATA-powered device) | Supplies power. Wide, flat, keyed connector. |
| SATA data | Drive | Motherboard SATA port | Carries data. Narrower keyed connector. |
Power alone does not make a drive usable. Until the data cable is also connected to the motherboard, the system cannot talk to the drive.

Step-by-step: connecting SATA power to the PSU
- Power down and unplug. Shut the PC down, switch the PSU off and remove its AC power cord. CORSAIR’s installation instructions specify that the AC cable should not be connected while you install the PSU, and the same discipline applies when you add or change internal power cables.
- Find the SATA power lead. It ends in a flat, wide, keyed plug meant for the power socket on a SATA SSD, HDD, optical drive or similar device.
- Connect the PSU end.
- Non-modular PSU: use the SATA lead that is permanently attached to the PSU. There is nothing to plug in at the PSU side.
- Modular or semi-modular PSU: use the SATA cable supplied with that PSU and plug its PSU-side connector into the output designated for SATA/peripheral cables. Check the labels on the PSU and the model’s manual for which outputs those are.
- Connect the drive end. Line up the keyed plug with the drive’s power socket and press it in gently and evenly. The shape only fits one way, so if it does not align, flip your approach rather than forcing it. Make sure the connection is snug, as manufacturers advise that cables be tightly connected.
- Connect the data cable. If the drive is new, attach its separate SATA data cable between the drive and a SATA port on the motherboard.
- Restore power. Once everything is seated, reconnect the AC cord, switch the PSU on and boot the system.
Where exactly does the cable plug into a modular PSU?
Modular PSUs group their sockets by function, and the sockets are typically labeled on the PSU body. Use the one designated for SATA or peripheral cables, not the ones meant for CPU, PCIe or motherboard power, even if a plug seems to fit. The exact labels and the number of SATA outputs differ by model, so your PSU’s manual is the authority for your unit.

Do not mix modular cables between PSUs
A modular cable that fits is not necessarily a cable that is safe. CORSAIR explains that the connectors on the component side (drive, motherboard, graphics card) are standardized, but the PSU-side connectors and their wiring can differ. Seasonic similarly warns that PSU-side pinouts can vary between manufacturers and even between product series from the same maker. A wrong pinout can deliver the wrong voltage to the wrong pin, which can damage the drive or the PSU.

- Do not reuse cables left over from an old PSU, another brand, or a different series of the same brand.
- Do not buy an unspecified “universal” modular cable.
Example of a model-specific replacement
be quiet! lists its CS-3310 as a one-device SATA power cable and names compatible series including Dark Power Pro 10 and newer, Straight Power 10 and newer, Pure Power 9 and newer, Power Zone and SFX. That is an example of how to check, not a promise that it suits your PSU: read the full current compatibility list for your exact model first. A good search phrase is “replacement SATA power cable for [your PSU model]”.

How many drives can one SATA cable power?
Many SATA power leads have several connectors in a row for daisy-chaining drives. No universal limit for how many drives one lead or one PSU output can handle applies to every PSU, so check your manual for model-specific guidance. If you are adding several drives, spreading them across separate leads or outputs is a reasonable approach where the PSU provides them.

If the drive does not appear
- Drive has no power: reseat the SATA power plug at the drive and, on modular units, at the PSU. Confirm the PSU is switched on and the AC cord is connected again.
- Power is fine but the drive is missing: check that the SATA data cable is seated at both the drive and a motherboard SATA port.
- Plug will not go in: check orientation and that you are using a SATA connector rather than a different peripheral connector. Do not force it.
- Using a non-original modular cable: power down immediately and replace it with a cable verified for your PSU.
