How to Connect Nanoleaf Lights to ChatGPT or Claude Safely

Set up Nanoleaf’s official MCP connector with ChatGPT or Claude, check device compatibility, and review permissions before letting an AI control your lights.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can connect Nanoleaf lights to ChatGPT or Claude through Nanoleaf’s official MCP integration. Pair your lights in Nanoleaf Desktop first, add Nanoleaf’s published connector in the AI app, then authenticate and review the permissions and tool requests before allowing control. Keep Nanoleaf Desktop and its computer running while you use the connection.

What the Nanoleaf connection does

Nanoleaf describes MCP (Model Context Protocol) as “an open standard that lets an AI assistant communicate with other apps and services.” Its integration lets a compatible assistant use supported Nanoleaf controls. Nanoleaf says the integration is free for Nanoleaf customers; that does not mean a ChatGPT or Claude subscription is free or that every account is eligible. Nanoleaf’s MCP feature page describes supported capabilities.

Depending on the device, firmware and AI platform, supported operations can include switching lights on or off, adjusting brightness and color or color temperature, creating and managing scenes, playing scenes and playlists, checking device status, and some 4D, Screen Mirror, Sync+ and Circadian Lighting features. Availability is not uniform across products or platforms.

Prepare your Nanoleaf lights

  1. Pair the supported device in Nanoleaf Desktop. Nanoleaf’s setup instructions specify desktop version 3.0.0 or later.
  2. Check for firmware updates. If the setup flow identifies an update, Nanoleaf says to install it before continuing.
  3. Leave Nanoleaf Desktop and its computer running. Nanoleaf says the MCP connection remains available only while both are on.

Check your exact product and firmware before expecting a particular effect. For example, Nanoleaf uses Shapes Hexagons as an RGB-capable example, while Elements supports warm-to-cool white and cannot produce blue. You do not need to buy another light set if your existing device is supported. See Nanoleaf’s supported-product information and Nanoleaf’s setup guide.

Connect Nanoleaf to ChatGPT

  1. Open ChatGPT settings and look for the current Connectors or Plugins area. Menus and availability can vary by plan, region, workspace, role, model and interface.
  2. Add Nanoleaf using the address published by Nanoleaf: https://integrations.nanoleaf.me/mcp. Confirm that you are using this vendor-published endpoint, rather than a lookalike connector.
  3. Sign in to your Nanoleaf account and approve only the access you understand and want to grant.
  4. Review ChatGPT’s app permission or action-approval settings. Depending on the account and workspace, options may include asking before actions, allowing read actions, or allowing low-risk actions. These settings do not give the app access beyond its underlying permissions.

Use the current interface and OpenAI’s connector guidance if labels or controls differ from these directions.

Connect Nanoleaf to Claude

  1. In Claude, open Settings > Connectors and add a remote custom connector using the Nanoleaf MCP URL published on Nanoleaf’s official setup page.
  2. Authenticate with your Nanoleaf account and review the access request before approving it.
  3. Use the connector’s search and tool controls to enable Nanoleaf and only the tools you need. Leave unneeded tools disabled.

Anthropic lists remote custom connectors for Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. Team and Enterprise connector availability is controlled by organization owners, so an administrator may need to enable it. Consult Anthropic’s custom connector instructions for current labels and eligibility.

Safety checks before giving a lighting command

  • Verify the connector source. Nanoleaf publishes the MCP endpoint on its own site. Anthropic advises adding custom connectors only from trusted organizations listed on their websites.
  • Read each authorization and action prompt. Check which account access is being granted and whether a requested tool only reads information or changes a device, scene or other setting. Anthropic notes that custom connectors may not be verified by Anthropic and can read or modify external data within granted permissions.
  • Enable the smallest useful tool set. Limit enabled tools and monitor their use. Anthropic warns that a connector developer can change tool behavior.
  • Keep approvals meaningful. Avoid approving an action merely because the assistant suggested it. Check the requested change, especially before enabling less restrictive action settings.
  • Disable write-capable tools during Claude Research. Anthropic says connected tools can be invoked during Research without another approval. Turn off tools that can write to external services before using that feature.
  • Disconnect when finished or if access looks wrong. In Claude, disconnect through settings or the third-party service’s settings. In ChatGPT, disconnect the app or ask a workspace administrator to disable it.

These are permission controls, not an independent security certification of the integration. There is no cited head-to-head security test establishing that ChatGPT or Claude is universally safer. Choose based on your account eligibility, workspace policy, the approval controls available to you, the tools you can limit, your device compatibility and whether you can keep Nanoleaf Desktop running.

Keep the local Nanoleaf API separate

Nanoleaf also documents a DIY local OpenAPI route. That is distinct from the MCP account connector described above. The local API requires a token for requests; Nanoleaf says to treat tokens like passwords, that a token lasts until the device is reset, and that it can be revoked by deleting it. Do not paste a local API token into an AI chat or an untrusted connector. See Nanoleaf’s API authentication and security guide and its local OpenAPI documentation.

Try a low-risk first request

After connecting, start with a simple request such as Nanoleaf’s example: “Create a cozy Scene for movie night in the living room.” Review the tool request and the resulting scene before approving any changes. If the assistant cannot find or control a light, confirm that the device is supported and updated, Nanoleaf Desktop and its computer are on, the correct Nanoleaf account was authorized, and the needed connector tools are enabled.
