How to Connect n8n, Ollama, and MCP Tools: Setup and Troubleshooting

Connect Ollama to n8n and choose the right MCP path: agent tool, workflow client, server trigger, or instance-level access. Check reachability, transport, authorization, and deployment routing.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To connect n8n, Ollama, and an MCP tool, first decide which side should provide the tools: use MCP Client Tool when an n8n AI Agent should call tools from an external MCP server, or MCP Server Trigger when an external MCP client should call tools exposed by n8n. Then make sure n8n can reach Ollama at its configured address and that the MCP transport, authorization, and deployment routing match your setup.

The title’s “MCP Tool” could refer to different n8n features, so this guide lays out the options and a practical fault-isolation sequence rather than claiming a particular setup or personal troubleshooting experience.

Choose the n8n MCP feature by direction

“MCP” does not identify a single connection path. Pick the feature according to which system consumes or serves the tools. n8n distinguishes these options in its MCP node documentation.

Feature Direction What it does
MCP Client node External MCP server → n8n workflow Fetches tools from an external server so a workflow can use them as steps. The workflow supplies tool inputs manually or as JSON.
MCP Client Tool node External MCP server → n8n AI Agent Makes external MCP tools available to an AI Agent, which can call them as tools.
MCP Server Trigger n8n workflow → external MCP client Provides an MCP entry point that runs connected tool nodes. A workflow can expose tools through Custom n8n Workflow Tool.
Instance-level MCP Selected n8n workflows → external MCP client Centralizes access to workflows on an n8n instance rather than configuring an MCP Server Trigger inside each workflow.

If your goal is for an AI Agent in n8n to call an external server’s tools, the MCP Client Tool node is the relevant path. If an outside MCP client should call a tool implemented in n8n, use MCP Server Trigger or instance-level MCP, depending on whether you want a workflow-level or instance-level setup.

Make Ollama reachable from n8n

Ollama’s URL must be reachable from the environment running n8n, not merely from your desktop browser or shell. The n8n Ollama credential guide lists http://localhost:11434 as the default base URL and says to use your configured OLLAMA_HOST value if it differs. For a local n8n server that has connection trouble, the guide suggests trying 127.0.0.1 instead of localhost. See the n8n Ollama credential guide.

When n8n and Ollama run in separate containers

Inside a container, localhost usually refers to that container itself. If n8n and Ollama are separate containers, the default address may therefore point n8n back to itself instead of to Ollama. The credential guide says to expose a port using OLLAMA_ORIGINS or set OLLAMA_HOST to an address accessible to the other container. Choose an address based on your actual network topology; do not assume a host-local URL is reachable across containers.

Once the base URL is correct, test the Ollama connection before changing unrelated MCP settings. If the model request itself cannot reach Ollama, an MCP endpoint change will not solve that separate connectivity problem.

Configure the MCP endpoint, transport, and access

For an MCP Server Trigger in a workflow

The trigger displays separate test and production URLs. Use the test URL while testing the workflow and the production URL for the active workflow endpoint. The node supports SSE and streamable HTTP; it does not support stdio. Confirm that the client you are connecting can use a supported transport and that you copied the URL for the correct state of the workflow. Details are in the MCP Server Trigger documentation.

For instance-level MCP

  1. In n8n, open Settings > Instance-level MCP > Connect a client.
  2. Copy the server URL shown in the connection dialog and use the configuration intended for your MCP client. Client-specific connection examples vary; n8n’s documentation notes that examples are available from version 2.33.0. Check the documentation against the version you run.
  3. Confirm MCP is enabled and that each workflow the client should access is marked Available in MCP.
  4. Configure OAuth or API-key authentication as required by your instance and client.

These are distinct checks: an endpoint can be reachable while access is disabled, a workflow is unavailable, or the client’s credentials are wrong. n8n’s instance-level MCP guidance also advises checking that the instance is reachable from the client—particularly when the client is cloud-hosted—preserving MCP request headers through proxies, load balancers, or WAFs, and inspecting n8n logs when connection attempts fail.

Account for reverse proxies and queue mode

nginx and streaming responses

If an MCP Server Trigger is behind nginx, n8n says to disable proxy buffering for the MCP endpoint. Streaming transports need the proxy to pass the stream through rather than buffering it. The trigger documentation also suggests considering gzip compression, chunked transfer encoding, and the forwarded Connection header when configuring the proxy.

Multiple webhook replicas

In queue mode, n8n documents that one webhook replica works as expected. If you run multiple webhook replicas, route all /mcp* traffic to one dedicated webhook replica. Persistent SSE or streamable HTTP connections can fail or deliver events unreliably if requests are distributed across replicas in a way that breaks the connection. See the MCP Server Trigger deployment guidance.

Troubleshoot in an order that isolates the failing layer

Record the actual configuration before changing it. n8n and Ollama versions, the MCP server implementation, container or host layout, authentication mode, proxy configuration, and the exact error can all affect the right fix. Then work through the connection layers:

  1. Identify the exact feature and direction. Note whether the workflow uses MCP Client, MCP Client Tool, MCP Server Trigger, or instance-level MCP, and which system is serving the tools.
  2. Check endpoint and transport. Verify the URL comes from the correct configuration screen or trigger URL, and that both ends support the selected transport.
  3. Test Ollama from n8n’s environment. Use the base URL accessible to the n8n process or container, not an address that only works on another machine or container.
  4. Verify authorization and exposure. Check credentials, MCP enablement, and whether the intended instance-level workflows are Available in MCP.
  5. Inspect network intermediaries. Check that proxies preserve the required routing headers and do not buffer streaming traffic; in queue mode, check how MCP routes to webhook replicas.
  6. Use logs and one small tool call. Start with a minimal request and inspect the relevant n8n and MCP server logs. This helps distinguish model connectivity, endpoint negotiation, authorization, and tool execution failures.

This sequence is a diagnostic approach, not a guarantee that every installation will encounter the same problems. The documented behavior is version-sensitive; confirm applicable details in current n8n documentation and against your installed version.
