To connect an external display to a MacBook Pro, identify your Mac’s chip and ports, match its video output to the display’s input with a suitable cable or adapter, then arrange the screen in Apple menu > System Settings > Displays. The Mac’s chip, display resolution, and refresh rate determine how many screens it can support—not the number of ports alone.
Check your MacBook Pro and display before connecting
MacBook Pro models vary in their available ports and external-display limits. Check your model and chip in Apple menu > About This Mac, then inspect the Mac’s ports and the display’s inputs. Apple’s MacBook Pro display guide covers current models, while its port guide describes port differences across generations.

Check the display’s manual or manufacturer documentation for its supported resolution, refresh rate, and cable requirements. Those details matter: a connection that physically fits may not support the display mode you want.
Choose a cable, adapter, or multiport adapter
Use a direct cable when the connectors match
If the display’s cable fits a video-capable port on your Mac, connect it directly, provided the cable and display support the required resolution and refresh rate. MacBook Pro models with HDMI can connect to an HDMI display using an HDMI cable; models with Thunderbolt ports can send video over those ports.

Use an adapter when the connectors differ
Choose an adapter compatible with both the Mac’s output and the display’s input, and check that it supports the display mode you need. Apple lists a USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter for connecting an HDMI display while also providing a standard USB port and a USB-C charging connection. Apple also lists USB-C VGA, Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2, and USB-C to USB adapters; check compatibility and availability when purchasing.
Verify high-resolution HDMI requirements
HDMI support depends on the Mac model and connection. Apple’s HDMI guidance specifies an Ultra High Speed 48 Gbps HDMI cable for 8K and notes that adapters are not supported for certain maximum modes, including up to 4K at 240 Hz on specified recent Mac models. Confirm that your particular Mac, display, cable, and connection path support the desired mode before buying an adapter.

Connect displays in the right order
- Turn on the display and connect it to power if needed.
- Connect it to a video-capable Mac port using the matching cable, or a compatible adapter if the connectors differ.
- If connecting more than one display, connect the highest-resolution display first, as Apple recommends.
A supported hub or daisy-chain configuration may let compatible displays share a Thunderbolt port, but it does not increase the maximum number of displays the Mac can drive.
Set resolution, arrangement, and mirroring in macOS
Open Apple menu > System Settings > Displays. Select a detected display to adjust available settings, including resolution, refresh rate, brightness, and color profile. Use the arrangement controls to position screens relative to one another, or choose mirroring instead of an extended desktop. macOS selects settings automatically when a display is connected, but you can change them here. Some scaled resolutions affect which refresh-rate or HDR options are available.

How many external displays can your MacBook Pro support?
The limit depends on the chip and on the resolution and refresh rate of the displays. The figures below are model-specific examples from Apple’s current M5-family MacBook Pro guide, not limits for every MacBook Pro generation.
| Chip | Maximum external displays | Configurations listed by Apple |
|---|---|---|
| M5 | Up to 2 | Two displays, each up to native 6K at 60 Hz or 4K at 144 Hz; or one display up to 8K at 60 Hz, 5K at 120 Hz, or 4K at 240 Hz. |
| M5 Pro | Up to 3 | Three displays, each up to native 6K at 60 Hz or 4K at 144 Hz. With two displays, Apple lists one up to 8K at 60 Hz, 5K at 120 Hz, or 4K at 240 Hz, plus a second up to 5K at 120 Hz or 4K at 200 Hz. |
| M5 Max | Up to 4 | Three Thunderbolt displays up to 6K at 60 Hz plus one HDMI display up to 6K at 60 Hz; or two displays, each up to 8K at 60 Hz, 5K at 120 Hz, or 4K at 240 Hz. |
These are Apple’s specifications for the stated chip configurations; they are not a guarantee that any combination of displays, cables, and adapters will work at every listed mode. For other generations, use Apple’s model-specific display support list rather than extrapolating from M5-family figures.

Troubleshoot a missing display or low resolution
- Confirm the display is powered on and set to the input used by the Mac.
- Reseat both ends of the cable and check that the cable or adapter supports the display’s resolution and refresh rate.
- Check the Mac’s model-specific display limit, especially if other external screens are already connected.
- Review the display maker’s connection requirements. For further steps, consult Apple’s external display troubleshooting guide.
The right diagnosis depends on the Mac model, monitor, cable or adapter, and macOS version; a low-resolution image alone does not identify which part of the connection is limiting output.
