You can use MCP to ask Claude or ChatGPT to create or revise a mind map through a connected mapping service. MCP is the connection standard—not the map editor: the service stores the map and exposes tools, while the AI client sends your request to those tools. Setup differs by service and client, and map-writing permissions deserve a careful review before you connect.
What MCP does in a mind-mapping workflow
The Model Context Protocol project defines MCP as “an open-source standard for connecting AI applications to external systems.” In this workflow, Claude or ChatGPT is the client; a mapping service provides an MCP server with tools the client can call. The mapping service, rather than MCP itself, creates and stores the editable map. MCP’s introduction explains the client-server model.

MindMap AI and Xmind document MCP connections that can create and edit maps from compatible clients. Their available operations differ, so check the connected server’s tool list rather than assuming every example request is supported. MindMap AI’s connector guide and Xmind’s MCP guide describe their respective capabilities.
Choose a connection based on your client and workflow
| Consideration | MindMap AI | Xmind |
|---|---|---|
| Documented connection | Directory or app connector flow for Claude and ChatGPT, using OAuth 2.1, according to the vendor’s guide. | Remote MCP server at https://app.xmind.com/api/mcp; Xmind documents Streamable HTTP and browser OAuth authorization. |
| Documented map operations | Create, search, view, edit nodes and relationships, change styles or layout, export, and delete maps. | Create, list recent maps, read map content, edit topics, reorganize branches, add relationships and sheets, change structure or theme, and handle task details. |
| Permission controls | Review permissions during authorization; the guide identifies destructive operations such as deleting nodes or a project. | Xmind’s Claude documentation describes tool settings including Always allow, Need approval, and Blocked. |
| Cost notes | According to MindMap AI, creation and editing use account AI credits, while viewing, searching, and exporting do not; export formats depend on plan. Check the current plan for details. | Not stated in Xmind’s cited MCP guide. |
These are documented capabilities, not independent performance comparisons. The available documentation does not establish which service produces better maps, responds faster, or offers better overall value.

Connect MindMap AI to Claude
MindMap AI’s help page, last updated August 6, 2026, describes a directory-based connector flow. Claude’s labels and connector availability can change, so use the current interface if they differ from these instructions.
- In Claude, find MindMap AI in the connector directory, or open Settings > Connectors.
- Select Connect. In the redirect, sign in to MindMap AI or create an account.
- Review the requested permissions, then approve the OAuth 2.1 authorization.
- Return to Claude and ask for a map, such as: “Create a mind map about the Butterfly Effect.”
- Open the resulting map on the MindMap AI canvas to continue editing it.
MindMap AI says the connector can access authorized map projects and related metadata, but not billing details, passwords, or other account data outside maps and metadata. It also says access is user-initiated. These are the vendor’s descriptions of its connector; consult its current privacy information and your organization’s rules before connecting sensitive work.

Connect MindMap AI to ChatGPT
The vendor’s guide describes finding MindMap AI in ChatGPT’s plugin directory or enabling it through app settings. Because labels, account availability, and directory flows are volatile, follow the current in-product instructions if the guide’s labels no longer match.

- Select Connect, then sign in or create a MindMap AI account in the redirect.
- Review the requested permissions and approve OAuth 2.1.
- Return to ChatGPT and request a map. The guide’s example is: “Turn this PDF into a mind map” with a PDF attached.
To disconnect, remove the connector in ChatGPT app settings or revoke its access in MindMap AI account settings.

Custom MCP servers are a separate ChatGPT route
OpenAI’s general instructions for custom MCP servers on ChatGPT web describe adding a custom server as a plugin, entering a name and server URL, configuring authentication, reviewing a risk notice, and creating the plugin. The guide lists SSE and streaming HTTP as supported transports; tools can be toggled in app settings. Workspace permissions and security restrictions still apply. This general custom-server procedure is not the same as MindMap AI’s directory or app connector flow. See OpenAI’s custom MCP server instructions for the current process.
Connect Xmind to Claude or another compatible client
Xmind documents its MCP server at https://app.xmind.com/api/mcp, using Streamable HTTP with OAuth authorization in a browser. Its guide gives these Claude Desktop steps:
Rank #4
- In Claude Desktop, open Customize > Connectors.
- Select Add > Add custom connector.
- Enter
https://app.xmind.com/api/mcp, connect, and authorize with your Xmind account in the browser. - Review the available tools and choose suitable permission settings before using them.
Xmind says other MCP-compatible clients can add the same server URL in their MCP settings, but the connection experience depends on each client. Xmind’s guide does not establish the exact current ChatGPT setup path or which ChatGPT workspaces are eligible, so confirm those details in ChatGPT before relying on this route.

Write requests that are clear and controlled
Natural-language requests work best when they specify the map’s purpose, organization, and whether you want changes made immediately. These are example prompts, not guarantees that every server supports every operation:
Best Value
- Build from notes: “Turn these brainstorming notes into a mind map with decisions, open questions, and next actions as separate branches.”
- Read without editing: “Read my existing map and return a concise outline of its main branches.”
- Preview a proposed change: “Add a branch for risks, connect each risk to the affected workstream, and show me the revised map before making further changes.”
If the request involves edits, ask for a preview or confirmation when the tool supports it. Then inspect the resulting map on the service’s canvas; a chat response is not a substitute for checking the actual structure.

Review what the server can change
MCP tools may have write or destructive permissions. MindMap AI’s tool list includes operations such as updating or deleting nodes and deleting a project. Xmind documents permission choices for its Claude tools, including requiring approval or blocking a tool. Enable only the actions needed for your task, and pay particular attention to edits and deletion.
OpenAI warns that an untrusted MCP server may access or steal information shared through app use or induce unintended actions, including changes or deletion. Verify the server identity and URL, review its permissions and tools, and connect only to a service you trust. OpenAI describes custom MCP connections as an elevated-risk action in its developer-mode guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUnderstand where map content goes
MindMap AI says content shown in Claude or ChatGPT is processed under Anthropic’s or OpenAI’s respective terms and privacy policies. It also says it cannot control those platforms’ retention, deletion, or model-training decisions. Before sharing sensitive or regulated material, check the mapping service’s current privacy policy, the AI platform’s applicable settings and terms, and your organization’s data rules.
Check the credit model before large edits
MindMap AI says creation and editing consume account AI credits in proportion to the size of the change; viewing, searching, and exporting do not consume credits. Export formats depend on the account plan. These details can change, so check the current plan terms before planning repeated or large revisions.
Quick Recap
Troubleshoot connection and map issues
- The connector is missing: Check whether it is available in your Claude or ChatGPT account and whether your workspace permits connectors or apps. Menu labels and availability can vary.
- Authorization does not finish: Complete the browser OAuth flow, confirm you signed in to the intended mapping account, and return to the AI client. If access was denied or partially granted, reconnect and review the requested permissions.
- A requested action is unavailable: Check the server’s enabled tools and permission settings. The prompt may ask for an operation the server does not expose, or a tool may be blocked or require approval.
- The map does not look right: Ask for a targeted revision—name the branch or relationship to change—and inspect the saved result on the mapping service’s canvas.
- You want to revoke access: Remove the connector from Claude or ChatGPT settings, or revoke the authorization in the mapping service’s account settings, where supported.
