To connect Claude Code to an Obsidian vault, start Claude Code with the vault folder as its working directory, or add that folder with --add-dir. Beforehand, make a separate backup, keep permission prompts enabled, and grant access only to the vault folder needed for the task. A local vault is not encrypted by Obsidian Sync, so Sync encryption does not prevent software running on your device from reading files it can access.
Connect Claude Code to your vault folder
An Obsidian vault is a folder of files. Anthropic documents starting Claude Code from a project directory; for a vault, that means opening a terminal in the vault folder and launching Claude Code there. Replace the example path with the vault’s actual location:

Use a cautious permission and backup workflow
- Make a full backup first. Obsidian suggests copying the entire vault folder or creating a zip archive. Keep the backup separate from the working vault so edits or mistakes in the working copy do not also affect it. See Obsidian’s backup guidance.
- Limit directory access. Start Claude Code in the vault or add only the vault folder required for the task. Avoid adding a broad parent folder or unrelated directories unless the work genuinely needs them;
--add-dirmakes the specified directory accessible to Claude Code. - Leave permission prompts on. Review requests for actions such as editing files or running commands, and approve only what is appropriate. Anthropic documents
--dangerously-skip-permissionsas a way to skip permission prompts and cautions that it should be used carefully. For a vault containing personal material, do not use that flag as a convenience shortcut. See Claude Code permissions documentation and the CLI reference. - Choose a backup location you can keep independent. A separate folder copy or zip follows Obsidian’s documented options. An external drive is another possible place to store a copy, but it is a storage suggestion rather than a specific Obsidian recommendation.
- Match access to the vault’s sensitivity. Software running on your device that has access to the local folder can work with its files according to the permissions granted. Think about local device protections and which directories Claude Code can access before starting.
What Obsidian Sync encryption does—and does not—protect
Obsidian distinguishes the local vault on your device from the remote vault used by Sync. Obsidian says the local vault is not encrypted by Sync. Its security documentation describes standard encryption and end-to-end encryption for remote Sync data; Obsidian recommends end-to-end encryption for notes that should remain private. With end-to-end encryption, Obsidian says it cannot access the notes. If you lose the encryption password, however, the remote data remains encrypted and unusable. Consequently, enabling Sync encryption does not make a local vault unreadable to Claude Code after you give it access to that folder. Remote Sync encryption and access to files on your device are separate considerations.
