To use Android handheld controls with Steam games, pair the controls with Android, then connect the handheld to a computer running Steam through Valve’s Steam Link app. The computer runs the game; Android receives the streamed audio and video and sends control input back. These instructions cover streaming, not running Steam games locally on every Android handheld.
What you need for Steam Link on Android
- An Android handheld with Bluetooth or a compatible port and cable for a wired controller.
- A controller that Android can connect to and that Steam Link or the game can use. Valve lists selected supported models, but does not guarantee every controller or built-in handheld control will work.
- A computer with Steam running, and an Android device and computer connected to the same network.
Valve’s Steam Link Android support page documents streaming games from a Steam-running computer. It does not establish that every Android handheld can install or run Steam games locally.

How do I connect a Bluetooth controller to my Android device?
- Put the controller into Bluetooth pairing mode. Use the controller’s manual for its specific button combination.
- On Android, open Settings > Connected devices > Pair new device.
- Select the controller from the available Bluetooth devices and follow any on-screen prompts.
Google says a game controller can connect to Android “using either a wired connection or Bluetooth.” For a wired controller, connect it with a compatible cable; the connector depends on both the controller and handheld. Android’s settings labels and available options can vary by device and Android release. On supported devices, Android may also offer controller customization, such as swapping button assignments or the left and right joysticks. These system settings do not guarantee a fix for Steam Link or a particular game.

- Turn on the host computer, launch Steam, and sign in.
- Connect the Android handheld to the same network as the computer.
- Install or open the Steam Link app and follow its on-screen instructions to find and connect to the computer.
- Start a Steam game through the connected session and check whether the controls work in Steam Link and in the game.
Pairing successfully in Android settings only confirms that Android connected to the controller. It does not prove that Steam Link recognizes the controller or that a particular game accepts its inputs.

Which controllers does Valve list for Steam Link on Android?
Valve names these controllers on its Android Steam Link support page:
- Steam Controller
- Microsoft Xbox One S Controller
- Sony DualShock 4, on Android 9.0 and newer
- Razer Kishi and Raiju Mobile
Valve says other input devices may work even if they are not officially supported. That is not a guarantee for every Bluetooth controller. Check the exact controller model, Android version, and connection method. Integrated controls can be recognized differently from an external controller; Valve’s listed documentation does not provide a universal mapping procedure for every handheld’s built-in controls.

How can I improve a Steam Link stream?
For best performance, Valve recommends a 5 GHz wireless router. Its Steam Link Google Play listing recommends connecting the computer to the router by Ethernet and connecting a phone or tablet to its 5 GHz Wi-Fi band. For Android TV, Valve recommends Ethernet for both the host computer and TV. These are recommendations, not guarantees of a particular latency or frame rate; results depend on the network and home conditions.

The controller does not appear in Android Bluetooth settings
- Check that it is in pairing mode and advertising over Bluetooth; consult its manual for the pairing procedure.
- Check the battery, then see whether the controller can pair with another phone or computer.
Android says it is connected, but Steam Link does not respond
- Compare the exact controller model with Valve’s Android support list.
- Close and reopen Steam Link after pairing, then check the app’s controller status.
The official documentation does not promise a universal fix for unlisted controllers.

Controls work in Steam Link but not in one game
Check whether the game supports a controller and inspect its own controller settings. Android button remapping is a system-level option and is not guaranteed to change how the streamed game receives input.
The stream is unstable or feels slow
Try Valve’s recommended network arrangement: connect the host computer to the 5 GHz router by Ethernet, connect the Android phone or tablet to the router’s 5 GHz band, and keep the device within reasonable range of the router.

You need to pair the controller again
In Android’s paired-device settings, forget the controller. Put it back into pairing mode and pair it again. Valve’s separate instructions for Steam Link hardware advise deleting the old pairing and starting again; those hardware instructions are not a universal procedure for the Android app.
