Identify which Xbox Nano controller you have
Setup depends on the exact model. Microsoft’s XBOX Nano Controller is wireless on Xbox consoles and on Windows PCs. The PowerA Nano Enhanced Wired Controller for Xbox Series X|S has no wireless pairing process; it uses a detachable USB cable. Applying the wrong instructions is the most common reason a Nano controller appears not to work.

Physical and packaging clues
Look for the exact manufacturer name and model wording on the controller, box or manual. A detachable 10-foot lead points to the PowerA wired model. Do not assume that the word Nano means all Nano controllers use the same buttons, battery or connection procedure.

What you need before setup
- For the Microsoft wireless model on Xbox: an Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One console switched on and the controller’s Xbox and pairing controls available.
- For the Microsoft model on PC: a Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer with Bluetooth enabled.
- For charging: a USB-C cable. Microsoft states that the cable is required and sold separately, so it may not be in the controller box.
- For the PowerA wired model: its detachable USB cable and an available USB port on the Xbox console.
Keep the controller identified before opening settings. Xbox consoles use XBOX Wireless for the Microsoft model; selecting Bluetooth menus on the console will not replace that connection method.

Connect the Microsoft XBOX Nano Controller to Xbox
Xbox Series X|S
- Turn on the Xbox Series X|S console.
- Wake the controller and put it into Xbox Wireless pairing or connection mode using the controller’s Xbox and pair controls.
- Use the pairing instructions shown on the Xbox screen. Microsoft’s product specification confirms the wireless technology, but does not publish a universal button-by-button timing sequence on the product page, so follow the prompts displayed by your console rather than a fixed sequence copied from another controller.
- Wait for the console to show the controller as connected.
- Open a game that accepts controller input and move a stick or press a button before beginning play.
If the console does not show a connection, return the controller to pairing mode and repeat the on-screen process. Make sure the console itself is powered on; a controller cannot complete the console pairing flow while the Xbox is off.
Xbox One
- Power on the Xbox One.
- Use the controller’s Xbox and pair controls to enter Xbox Wireless pairing mode.
- Complete the connection from the prompts on the Xbox display.
- Confirm that the controller is listed as connected, then test it in a controller-enabled game.
The Microsoft model supports both Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One. The console generation changes the wording and layout of some prompts, but the important distinction remains the same: this controller uses Xbox Wireless on the console, not the PC Bluetooth menu.
How to confirm the setup worked
A successful setup is more than a light or a pairing animation. The controller should appear as connected on the Xbox interface and produce movement or button input in a game. If the dashboard responds but a particular game does not, close and reopen that game after the controller connection is established, then test another controller-enabled title to separate a game-specific issue from a console connection issue.

Pair the Microsoft XBOX Nano Controller with a Windows 10 or 11 PC
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices in Windows and turn Bluetooth on.
- Select Add device, choose Bluetooth, and place the controller in pairing mode with its Xbox and pair controls.
- Choose the XBOX Nano Controller when it appears in the device list.
- Wait for Windows to finish pairing, then test the controller in a game that supports controllers or in Windows game-controller settings.
Windows menu labels can change with feature updates, but the route through Bluetooth & devices, Add device and Bluetooth reflects the current Windows 10/11 settings layout. If your build uses slightly different wording, choose the equivalent Bluetooth device-add screen rather than a wired USB or printer option.
If Windows lists the controller but the game does not respond
- Check that Windows shows the controller as paired or connected, not merely discovered.
- Close the game, reconnect the controller, and launch the game again so it can detect the controller during startup.
- Test another controller-enabled game or Windows game-controller screen. This distinguishes a Windows pairing problem from a title that is not accepting the device.
- If an old entry for the same controller is saved but will not connect, remove that Bluetooth entry in Windows and repeat Add device.
The Microsoft specification establishes Bluetooth support for Windows 10 and Windows 11. It does not promise identical menu wording on every Windows update, so use the labels currently displayed on your computer.
Charge the controller’s internal battery
- Obtain a suitable USB-C cable if one was not included. Microsoft lists the cable as a separate requirement and says it is sold separately.
- Insert the USB-C connector into the controller’s charging port.
- Connect the other end to an appropriate powered USB source and leave the controller connected while its internal rechargeable battery charges.
- Disconnect the cable when you are ready to use the controller wirelessly, or keep it connected if you are using it as a charging connection.
The battery is internal, so there is no removable battery pack to swap during setup. If charging does not begin, check that the connector is fully seated, try another known-good USB power source and inspect the cable for damage. The absence of a cable in the package is expected under Microsoft’s stated specification; it does not by itself indicate a defective controller.

Supported platforms and connection methods
Microsoft describes the wireless XBOX Nano Controller as compatible with several device categories, but the connection method depends on the platform.

The Android, iOS, tablet and Smart TV entries describe Microsoft’s stated compatibility categories. They do not mean every phone, tablet or television exposes the same menus or supports every controller feature.
Troubleshoot the Microsoft wireless model
The Xbox cannot find the controller
- Confirm that the console is switched on.
- Wake the controller and deliberately place it in Xbox Wireless pairing mode with the Xbox and pair controls.
- Follow the current on-screen pairing instructions instead of relying on a timing sequence intended for another Xbox controller.
- If the first attempt fails, restart the pairing process from the beginning and test input in the dashboard before opening a game.
If repeated attempts fail on both an Xbox Series X|S and an Xbox One, recheck the branding. A PowerA Nano Enhanced Wired Controller will not appear through Xbox Wireless because it is a USB-only device.

Windows Bluetooth does not show the controller
- Verify that Bluetooth is enabled in Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
- Choose Add device and specifically select Bluetooth.
- Put the controller into pairing mode before scanning, then select the newly displayed controller entry.
- If Windows retains a failed or stale entry, remove that entry and start a new pairing attempt.
Do not connect the Microsoft wireless model through a USB cable and expect that to replace the Bluetooth setup described by Microsoft. The supplied specification identifies Bluetooth as the wireless PC connection.
It pairs but does not control a game
- Check the Windows Bluetooth status and reconnect if the device is only listed as saved.
- Test in Windows game-controller settings or another controller-enabled game.
- Restart the game after the controller reports connected.
- On Xbox, verify dashboard input before troubleshooting an individual game.
The controller will not charge
- Confirm that you are using the USB-C port and a cable that is not damaged.
- Try another powered USB source.
- Remember that Microsoft lists the charging cable as sold separately; check that you actually have a cable before treating a missing accessory as a hardware fault.
- If the battery still does not charge after these checks, verify that the device is the Microsoft wireless model and seek the manufacturer’s support for that exact hardware.
PowerA Nano Enhanced Wired Controller: separate setup
Use this section only when the controller is branded PowerA Nano Enhanced Wired Controller for Xbox Series X|S. It is not the Microsoft wireless XBOX Nano Controller.
Connect the wired controller
- Turn on the Xbox console.
- Plug the detachable 10-foot USB cable into an available USB port on the Xbox.
- Connect the other end to the controller.
- Look for the small white LED. PowerA’s manual says that this LED illuminates to indicate a successful connection.
- If the controller is connected but has no function, confirm that it is assigned as the Player 1 controller.
There is no Bluetooth or Xbox Wireless pairing step for this model. If the LED does not illuminate, PowerA’s manual instructs you to confirm that the Xbox is powered on and check the cable connection at both the console and controller.

Program the two Advanced Gaming Buttons
The PowerA manual identifies two programmable buttons, AGR and AGL. Their programming procedure is specific to the wired PowerA model:
- Hold the Program button for two to three seconds until the LED flashes.
- Press the source button whose function you want to copy.
- Press the Advanced Gaming Button, either AGR or AGL, to assign that function.
The assignment remains in the controller’s memory after it is disconnected. These programmable-button instructions do not apply to Microsoft’s wireless XBOX Nano Controller.
Common setup mistakes to avoid
- Using Bluetooth on Xbox: the Microsoft model uses XBOX Wireless for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One.
- Using Xbox Wireless instructions on a PC: Windows 10/11 uses Bluetooth for this controller.
- Confusing the two Nano products: Microsoft’s unit is wireless with an internal battery; PowerA’s unit is wired with a detachable 10-foot cable.
- Assuming a charging lead is included: Microsoft says the USB-C charging cable is required and sold separately.
- Expecting a universal button-timing recipe: Microsoft’s product page confirms the connection technology but directs the console setup through its current prompts rather than publishing one fixed timing sequence.
- Testing only one game: use the dashboard or another controller-enabled title to determine whether the connection works before blaming the controller.
Fast decision path
If the label says Microsoft XBOX Nano Controller, use Xbox Wireless on an Xbox console, Bluetooth through Windows Settings on a Windows 10/11 PC, and a separately purchased USB-C cable for charging. If the label says PowerA Nano Enhanced Wired Controller, skip wireless pairing, connect its detachable USB cable, look for the white connection LED and assign it as Player 1 if necessary. That model distinction determines the entire setup procedure.
