How to Connect an Original Xbox to HDMI

Use an Original Xbox-compatible component-to-HDMI adapter, connect it to the console and TV, then check the correct HDMI input and adapter-specific settings.

To connect an original Xbox to an HDMI-only TV, use an adapter designed for the Original Xbox that converts the console’s component video and audio to HDMI. Connect it to the console’s AV port, run an HDMI cable from the adapter to the TV, then select the matching HDMI input. The original Xbox has no native HDMI output, and the picture mode you get depends on the console’s region, settings, and game.

Choose the right conversion path

The Original Xbox sends audio and video through its proprietary AV port. A console-specific component-to-HDMI adapter takes component video and audio from that port and outputs HDMI. One example is the manufacturer-described ElectronXout Original Xbox HDMI adapter; its maker says it supports all Original Xbox revisions for orders from 2024 onward. That compatibility statement is the manufacturer’s claim, not an independent test result.

Do not confuse component video with composite video. Composite uses a single yellow video RCA plug alongside red and white audio plugs. A generic composite-to-HDMI converter accepts that signal, not necessarily component video, and it is a different connection path. If you choose a separate scaler or converter instead of a console-specific adapter, you also need an Original Xbox AV cable that actually carries component video.

Connect the console to the TV

  1. Check the adapter or converter’s inputs before buying. Confirm that it is made for the Original Xbox or accepts component video, rather than assuming an “AV to HDMI” label means it supports component.
  2. With the console switched off, connect the adapter to the Original Xbox AV port. For a separate converter, connect a compatible Original Xbox component cable to the console and match its component plugs to the converter’s inputs.
  3. Connect an HDMI cable from the adapter or converter’s HDMI output to an HDMI input on the TV. Electron Shepherd recommends an HDMI cable shorter than 3 m for its ElectronXout adapter.
  4. Turn on the TV and select the HDMI input you used. Turn on the Xbox and, once a picture appears, review the console’s Video and Audio settings alongside the instructions for your specific adapter revision.

Set realistic expectations for resolution and region

Electron Shepherd lists these supported modes for its adapter: NTSC at 480i, 480p, 720p, or 1080i, and PAL at 576i. These are manufacturer specifications, not a promise that every game can output every listed mode. The company’s Original Xbox modern-TV setup guide says the available output depends on the game and console settings. A game or region that does not support a higher mode will not become HD simply because it is connected through HDMI.

#1 Best Overall
Jadebones HDMI Adapter Converter for Original Xbox Console
  • [YPbPr Signal Output] Convert YPbPr component signals of Original Xbox console to HDMI signals, and then transmit them to modern HDTVs and monitors through HDMI cable, without any delay.
  • [Clear Image] Use YPbPr component signal conversion and transmission to provide the best image colors and details. (Transfer only, can't improve the video quality.)
  • [Plug and Play] This adapter does not require external power supply, just connect the adapter and HDMI cable (Note: Without HDMI cable), and it is ready to use.

Configure audio using the adapter’s instructions

Audio setup can differ by adapter revision and intended audio mode, so follow the directions for the hardware you have rather than applying one setting universally. Electron Shepherd’s product page calls for the Xbox Audio Mode to be set to Dolby Surround, with Dolby Digital and DTS disabled, for its specified audio input. Its setup guide separately discusses enabling Dolby Digital for 5.1 audio. Those directions address different product-specific audio handling; if they appear to conflict, check the instructions for your adapter revision and chosen audio setup.

Troubleshoot a blank screen or missing sound

  • No picture: Confirm the TV is on the HDMI input connected to the adapter, reseat the console-side and HDMI connectors, and verify that a separate converter is receiving component rather than composite. If using a component cable, make sure it is for the Original Xbox and carries component video.
  • Picture but no sound: Check the adapter’s revision-specific audio instructions and the Xbox Audio settings. Do not assume a setting described for one input or surround mode applies to every adapter configuration.
  • Still not working: Isolate the connection path: check the adapter’s power and connections as specified by its maker, then try a known-compatible cable or display input if available. Consult the adapter manufacturer’s guide before concluding that the TV or console is at fault.

Microsoft’s Component HD AV Cable manual is for Xbox 360, not the Original Xbox. Its advice about selecting the TV input that matches the connected cables can provide general context, but it does not establish Original Xbox cable compatibility.
