For a newly supplied Optimum gateway or router, start with the QR code on the packing slip or store receipt, or open the setup link in Optimum’s order or delivery email or text. Follow the guided setup to connect the equipment and activate service; it may require the My Optimum app. Optimum says its guided process is designed to take 15 minutes or less, though that is not a guarantee for every installation. Optimum Internet Self-Setup
Start with the equipment Optimum supplied
Optimum’s self-setup kit may include internet equipment, a coax cable and a power cord. Ethernet is optional, and a coax splitter is included only if requested. Use the QR code on the packing slip or receipt, or the link in the order or delivery message, to open the guided setup. The flow can help you check connections, place equipment and verify service. If you ordered more than one service, Optimum says to set up internet equipment—a modem or gateway—first.

Set up the equipment soon after it arrives. Optimum says to contact it if the equipment has not activated within 14 days of receipt. If you have a specific model, use that model’s instructions for its connection sequence and indicator lights; light behavior and activation steps should not be assumed to be identical across Optimum equipment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIdentify whether you have a gateway or separate devices
Integrated gateway
A gateway combines modem and router functions in one device. Connect it using the model-specific instructions or the guided app flow. For example, Optimum’s Gateway 5 guide tells customers replacing equipment to disconnect the old unit, connect coax to the new Gateway, connect power, and wait for the POWER, DS/US and ONLINE lights to become solid green. It says this can take a few minutes, then directs customers to call the activation number. These steps apply to Gateway 5, not every Optimum gateway. Optimum Gateway 5 installation guide

Separate modem and router
Some older setups use a separate modem and Smart Router. In Optimum’s legacy D-Link Smart Router guide, the modem must already have an internet connection before the router is added. Connect an Ethernet cable from the modem to the router’s WAN port. A wired computer connection is optional: the guide says to connect a computer to a router LAN port only for wired use, not for Wi-Fi access. This is legacy, model-specific guidance rather than a universal procedure for current Optimum gateways. Optimum D-Link Smart Router guide
Connect your devices to Wi-Fi
After service is active, select the in-home Wi-Fi network on each phone, computer, TV or other device, then enter the correct password. For Gateway 5, Optimum says customers can personalize the network name and password through the Optimum gateway account page, or use the default credentials printed on the gateway’s bottom label. Follow the directions for your own model before relying on a label or account page.

- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
The My Optimum app can show or change your Wi-Fi network name and password and display network details. It also offers connectivity troubleshooting, outage detection, a speed test and a network health check. My Optimum app features
Connect a computer by Ethernet (optional)
Wi-Fi setup does not require a computer connected by Ethernet. Use a cable only if you want a wired connection or need to replace a cable. In the legacy Smart Router setup, the modem connects to the router’s WAN port; a computer can connect to a LAN port for wired access. Optimum lists Ethernet as optional in its self-setup kit, so check what arrived before buying or substituting a cable.

Troubleshoot setup and Wi-Fi problems
The service will not activate
- Use the guided setup to recheck connections, equipment placement and service status.
- Confirm you are following instructions for the exact gateway or router model. For Gateway 5, use its documented light sequence and activation directions; do not apply those light indications to another model.
- If a separate legacy modem and router are in use, verify that the modem has internet before adding the router. The D-Link guide also advises checking that connections are secure and restarting the modem before powering the router back on.
- If the issue persists, use Optimum’s internet support options. Optimum’s self-setup page advises contacting support if equipment has not activated within 14 days of receipt.
One device cannot connect
- Make sure the device is selecting your in-home Wi-Fi network, not a nearby network with a similar name.
- Check the password in the My Optimum app or, where your gateway’s instructions permit, on its credential label.
- If other devices connect but one does not, use Optimum’s device-Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance or contact support.
Optimum lists chat as available 24/7; phone support routes depend on your area. Its support site includes internet-connection and device Wi-Fi troubleshooting topics. Optimum internet support

When replacing an Optimum device, follow the replacement directions for the new model and return the old Optimum equipment as instructed. Optimum’s self-setup FAQ says customers replacing a modem should return the old equipment to avoid unreturned-equipment charges. It also states that billing for shipped equipment begins three days after shipment, while billing for store pickup begins the same day.
