To connect an MP4 player to a Windows PC or Mac, use a USB data cable that fits the exact model, unlock the player, and select File Transfer if prompted. Then find the device on the computer, copy compatible files to the folder or destination specified in its manual, and wait for the transfer to finish before disconnecting. The precise cable, connection mode, file formats, and Mac workflow vary by player, so start with its model number and official manual.
1. Identify your player and its connection requirements
“MP4 player” is a broad product label, not a guarantee that devices share a port, USB mode, folder layout, or supported formats. Find the model number on the player, its packaging, or its settings screen, then consult the manufacturer’s manual for that specific model. 2. Connect the player to the computer
- Use the supplied cable or a model-compatible USB cable capable of data transfer. A cable that only charges may not let the computer access files.
- Connect the player directly to a computer USB port when possible, rather than through a hub.
- Unlock the player if required. If it displays a “Use USB for” prompt, select and confirm “File Transfer.” The wording and availability of this option depend on the model.
Sony notes that some USB-C-to-USB-C connections may not work with applicable models; follow the workaround in that model’s instructions rather than assuming one cable setup works for every player: Sony USB connection guidance.
3. Find the player in Windows or macOS
Windows
Open File Explorer and look under This PC or the portable-device list. A player using Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) may appear as a portable device instead of a drive with a letter. SanDisk explains this distinction in its MTP and MSC mode guidance.

Mac
Whether a player appears in Finder depends on its model and USB mode. SanDisk says MTP is unsupported on macOS for the players covered by its guidance, while Mass Storage Class (MSC) is supported on macOS and Windows. That is not a guarantee about every player or every operating-system version; check the device manual for its Mac transfer method.
4. Copy files to the player
Use drag-and-drop in File Explorer or the supported transfer software named in the manual. Copy files into the model’s designated destination, such as a Music or Video folder, if its instructions specify one. Folder names and transfer steps are not universal: Sony documents an Explorer workflow for a particular Walkman, while SanDisk directs users of certain players to copy music into a Music folder. If the player offers internal storage and a microSD card as destinations, select the intended location and check available capacity in its settings. Only use a card after confirming that the exact model supports its type and capacity; not all players have a card slot. Sony describes storage selection for applicable Walkman models in its transfer guidance.

5. Wait for the copy to finish and check playback
Do not unplug the player while files are transferring. Wait for the copy to complete, then follow the player’s manual and the computer’s removal instructions. SanDisk warns against disconnecting during a transfer, and Sony says to disconnect after the transfer completes: SanDisk transfer instructions; Sony transfer guidance.

A file appearing on the player does not mean it will play. Check the model’s supported formats and any copy-protection restrictions. SanDisk’s guidance distinguishes players that accept DRM-free AAC/M4A from models that require AAC/M4A files to be converted to MP3, and notes that protected content may not transfer or play in some workflows: SanDisk format and transfer guidance. Use compatible, legally accessible files and manufacturer-supported conversion options; do not try to bypass copy protection.
How USB transfer modes differ
Some players expose a simple File Transfer choice; others may offer MTP or MSC. SanDisk describes the following behavior for the players covered by its support guidance. The details should not be treated as universal for all devices or operating-system versions.

- Unlock the player and accept a USB or file-transfer prompt. If no prompt appears, check its settings for a USB connection mode.
- Make sure the cable is firmly connected and supports data transfer. Try the supplied cable if available.
- Connect directly to a computer USB port, bypassing any hub, and try another port.
- On Windows, check the portable-device list as well as the list of drives. Consult the model’s manual for any driver or software requirement.
- If a transfer begins but fails, check free internal-storage or card capacity. On applicable Walkman models, Sony says capacity can be checked in the Storage settings screen: Sony transfer and storage guidance.
For some legacy Sony models, the manufacturer says first recognition or charging may take up to five minutes. That timing applies to the models in its troubleshooting guidance, not to MP4 players generally: Sony recognition troubleshooting.
Do not format storage as an early fix: formatting can erase files. If the model’s support steps call for formatting, back up accessible content first and follow the instructions for that exact player. Sony includes formatting as a later, model-specific troubleshooting step in its recognition guidance.
