How to Connect an MCP Server to an Android App and Render Results

Use an Android MCP client to connect to a reachable server, call tools, and map validated results into native UI—or implement a host for MCP Apps HTML views.

To connect an MCP server to a mobile Android app, make the app an MCP client: connect to a server endpoint the device can reach, complete initialization, discover and call tools, then map validated results into your app’s own UI state. The official Kotlin SDK documents a Streamable HTTP client workflow. It does not document automatic conversion of MCP output into native Android or Compose views.

Choose what you mean by “Android app”

There are three different setups that can be confused:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • A mobile app consuming a server: the Android app is an MCP client and displays returned data in its own interface.
  • An MCP Apps host: a host retrieves an HTML UI resource associated with a tool and renders it in a sandboxed iframe.
  • Gemini in Android Studio: the IDE connects to an MCP server for development assistance. This does not configure an app installed on a phone.

For a native mobile interface, use the first setup. The server supplies tools and data; your app decides how to present that data.

Connect an Android MCP client to a server

  1. Choose a reachable server endpoint and transport. The Kotlin SDK lists Streamable HTTP, SSE, and WebSocket transport approaches. Its client quickstart demonstrates Streamable HTTP. The example endpoint http://localhost:3000/mcp is for a local setup; it is not automatically reachable from a separate physical device.
  2. Add the client and transport dependencies. The SDK repository documents the io.modelcontextprotocol:kotlin-sdk-client client module. Ktor engine dependencies are not added transitively, so include the engine appropriate to your project. Check the official repositories for current SDK and Ktor versions rather than copying a version from an older guide.
  3. Construct the client and transport, then connect. The quickstart’s sequence is to create a Client, create a StreamableHttpClientTransport with an HTTP client and server URL, and call client.connect(transport). The SDK’s client API performs the initialization handshake during connection. After connecting, inspect the server’s capabilities and version.
  4. Discover tools and call the one your app needs. The quickstart uses client.listTools() to discover available tools; the client API provides callTool for invoking a tool. Handle protocol errors, transport failures, and server-declared capabilities in your app rather than assuming every tool call will succeed.
  5. Translate the result into app-owned UI state. Validate the fields your interface needs, map them into your app’s state model, and render that state with the UI toolkit already in use. The SDK documents client and protocol operations, not a Compose-specific binding.
  6. Test from the target runtime. Use an endpoint accessible to the actual emulator or device, configure any server-required authentication, and inspect available tools and logs with MCP Inspector during local development.

The Kotlin SDK’s server quickstart exposes Streamable HTTP on /mcp. On a phone, localhost refers to the device environment, not your development computer; configure a host address the device can reach.

Choose native UI or an MCP Apps view

MCP Apps is a host-mediated HTML UI mechanism, not a server instruction to draw native Android widgets. A tool can point to an HTML resource using a ui:// URI. A capable host fetches that resource and renders it in a sandboxed iframe, then initializes the view and delivers tool inputs and results. Results can include ordinary content for model context and structuredContent intended for UI display.

Consideration Native Android client UI MCP Apps host/view
What is rendered Native components driven by app-owned state Server-provided HTML UI resource
How the UI is linked The app chooses which result fields to show Tool metadata references a ui:// resource
Main implementation work Client transport, tool lifecycle, result validation, and UI mapping Resource fetching, sandboxed iframe, view initialization, result delivery, interaction, and teardown
Android-specific support established by the cited documentation The Kotlin SDK documents client support and transports, but not a Compose rendering recipe The MCP Apps overview documents HTML and iframe behavior, but not a drop-in native Android host

If your requirement is native Android widgets, keep rendering in the app and use MCP results as data. If you specifically need a server-linked MCP Apps view, the Android product must provide the host and web-view capabilities and manage the view lifecycle. The reviewed documentation does not establish automatic MCP Apps-to-Compose rendering.

Keep Android Studio configuration separate

Android Studio’s Gemini agent can connect to an MCP server through the IDE’s MCP Server settings. The Android Developers guide describes enabling MCP Servers and configuring mcp.json. For Streamable HTTP, it uses the httpUrl field; an SSE endpoint generally uses a /sse URL and the url field. Custom HTTP headers are supported. See the Android Studio MCP server guide for the IDE setup.

That guide lists limitations for Android Studio’s integration: it does not support stdio transport, MCP resources, or prompt templates. It also notes that authentication failures may require completing the server’s login flow. These constraints describe the IDE host, not the capabilities of a mobile app using its own MCP client.

Avoid common connection and rendering mistakes

  • Confusing hosting with consuming: a third-party Android MCP SDK describes hosting an MCP server from an Android app and explicitly limits that use to debug builds. That is the reverse of connecting an app as a client.
  • Using the wrong localhost: a quickstart’s localhost URL is a local example. For a device run, configure an endpoint reachable from that device or emulator.
  • Expecting MCP Apps to create native views: its documented UI is HTML rendered in a host-managed sandboxed iframe.
  • Assuming all clients support every feature: capabilities vary by host. Check the documentation for the specific client or host you choose.
  • Treating tool output as trusted UI instructions: validate returned data and constrain what the app will display or use to trigger actions. Keep tool execution separate from UI state handling.

For implementation details, consult the official Kotlin SDK repository and quickstart for client modules, transports, connection examples, and Inspector guidance, and the MCP Apps overview for UI-resource and host/view behavior. SDK APIs and host support can change; verify current documentation and dependency versions when starting a project.
