How to Connect an Angular Signal Form to Its Template

Use Angular’s FormField directive and [formField] bindings to connect Signal Form fields to matching template controls.

To connect an Angular Signal Form to its template, import FormField from @angular/forms/signals, add it to the component’s imports, and bind each form field to its matching HTML control with [formField].

Connect Signal Form fields to HTML controls

In this example, the form model is named loginForm. Bind each control to the corresponding field in that model:

<input type="email" [formField]="loginForm.email">
<input type="password" [formField]="loginForm.password">
<input type="checkbox" [formField]="loginForm.rememberMe">

The field path must match the control’s purpose: the email input uses loginForm.email, the password input uses loginForm.password, and the checkbox uses loginForm.rememberMe. The official Angular lesson demonstrates these bindings for a login form.

Import the directive

Import FormField from @angular/forms/signals and include it in the component’s imports array so the template can use the directive:

import { FormField } from '@angular/forms/signals';

For a standalone component, the import belongs in the component metadata alongside the other template dependencies. Angular’s lesson shows the required directive import and bindings in its Signal Forms template tutorial.

Display current field values

Signal Form field values are signals. To read a value in the template, call .value() on the field, for example loginForm.email().value(). The lesson shows values updating automatically as the user types and demonstrates masking the password with a conditional expression rather than displaying it in plain text.

Angular describes [formField] as handling two-way binding: typing into a connected control updates the loginModel signal, and displayed field values update accordingly. This explains the data flow; it is not a performance benchmark or a claim about speed.

Choose the form API that matches your approach

Angular documents Signal Forms, reactive forms, and template-driven forms as distinct approaches. The syntax in this lesson is specifically Signal Forms syntax; do not substitute [(ngModel)] or [formControl] for its [formField] bindings.

Approach Typical connection How Angular positions it
Signal Forms [formField]="loginForm.email" Connects a Signal Form field to a template control; this tutorial imports FormField from @angular/forms/signals.
Reactive forms [formControl], or [formGroup] with formControlName Uses an explicit form object model. Angular describes reactive forms as more scalable, reusable, and testable.
Template-driven forms [(ngModel)] and a name attribute, with directives from FormsModule Uses directives to create and manipulate the model; Angular positions it for basic requirements managed in the template.

Angular’s forms overview compares reactive and template-driven forms by model setup, data model, data flow, and validation: reactive forms use an explicit, structured and immutable model, synchronous data flow, and validation functions; template-driven forms use an implicit, unstructured and mutable model, asynchronous data flow, and validation directives. The established guides show the corresponding reactive forms and template-driven forms APIs.

Check the syntax against your Angular version

Angular documentation and APIs can evolve. Before applying this example in a project, confirm that the current documentation for your Angular version still uses the named import and binding syntax shown here.
